Quick Summary: A deliciously endearing romance

My Review: The Enemy by Sarah Adams is book #2 in the It Happened in Charleston series.

About the Book: Two former high school rivals who never got the chance to "have their moment" grow up and take a chance on being together.

About the Characters:

Ryan -> Successful chef who wanted more for his life; he longed to get the girl and make a home with her; he was looking to have all the things that contributed to true happiness; very supportive and caring

June -> Successful entrepreneur/baker who was suspended where relationships were concerned; experienced a bad breakup that caused her to doubt herself; had a love/hate thing going with Ryan; family-oriented

About the Narration: What a delightful listening experience! I cannot say enough good things about the energy that the narrators put out. I listened to this book in one sitting, as they made it so entertaining.

My Final Say: I loved this book. It was funny and sweet and charming, and, and, and. It left me with a big smile on my face.

Other: Readers who enjoy stories where high school enemies grow up and get a chance to find something special together will adore this book.

I received a copy of this audiobook from netGalley for a honest review.

I love Sarah Adams books. I recently discovered them (within the past year) and have been listening to as many as I can get. I felt so lucky to receive this copy from netGalley and listened to it right away without even realizing it was June's story. I thought she was great in the match and wanted her to have a happy ever after. I think this one is one of my favorites. I love the conflict and the little pranks they played on each other and how their friends and June's family were so encouraging. All in all a 5 star read.

I continued my Sarah Adams’ backlist rereads with The Enemy and it was SO good! I loved it the first time, but I loved it even more the 2nd time! I loved the audio and I didn’t want to stop listening. I loved the tension and banter and that June owned a donut shot and Ryan was a chef. So fun!!

Also loved the bonus epilogue so much 🥲🥲🥲 I listened to most of this in one day and couldn’t get enough! I can’t wait for this to be out!!

This was a great sequel to The Match! I was so glad that we got to continue with June and her meddling family.

This is your quintessential enemies to lovers romance that started in High School and spans decades as the two come back together for their friend's wedding! Despite it being a little predicable, this is just a sweet and funny rom com that's filled with pranks and unrequited pining.

The extended epilogue truly had me screaming!!!

Overall, a short and sweet dislike to lovers rom com.

I love this story so much, Im so happy to see it make its trad debut!!! Ryan and June are the loveliest people. even an enemies-to-lovers story, Sarah Adams can't help writing the softest softies who ever softied!

I love the way Ryan and June talk through and overcome some old hurts while also resorting to their old, immature ways of connecting with one another but now in a grown-up, fun way. Ryan is such a loving, supportive, sometimes lovingly obnoxious frenemy turned friend turned partner to June. and I love how June so seamlessly, without even meaning to, makes Ryan her person and becomes his in return. there is so much love in this story it was like the biggest, warmest hug reading it.

the narration was perfect for this story! had that perfect southern softie charm that this story portrays :)

thank you so much for the alc!

I didn't like this one as much as The Match (book 1) but it was still really good! Evie and Jacob (The Match) made appearances in The Enemy but I wish we got to see even more of them. June and Ryan's enemies to lovers story was very sweet and engaging. The cooking and donuts were a memorable addition. There were also some comical moments such as pranks and boy band apparel, which I loved. Lastly, there was an appearance by a character from Adams' When in Rome series, which I loved to see.

Sarah Adams is one of those authors that I will continue to read anything she puts out. My first book by her was When in Rome and I have not looked back. It seems that every one of her books is instantly one of my favorites.

The Enemy is the second book in the It Happened in Charleston series. You do not need to read the first book but the main character is the sister of the male lead in The Match so there is some overlap.

While I loved this book this was my least favorite by Adams. That sounds like a negative but it really isn’t. I still loved this book, I just loved it the least out of all of hers. The story follows June and Ryan who were enemies in high school but both secretly had feelings for the other. June and Ryan are thrown back together when mutual best friends get married. Ryan had all intentions of starting fresh but June kept the rivalry going.

I really liked both characters and how selfless they both could be. The reason I didn’t love this book as much as the others was because their time hating the other just felt so forced. Their chemistry and their interactions were so strong from the beginning that I didn’t need that slow burn of wanting them to hate each other.

As a fan of Sarah Adams, I loved the connection to When in Rome in the epilogue. It was something so small that just brought the biggest smile to my face.

Classic Sarah Adams. If you enjoy her other novels with a cheeky + sweet FMC and a sassy + misunderstood MMC, you’ll enjoy this second chance romance as well!

DNF on Chapter 2. While I’m sure the female narrator is fantastic in other books, this writing is horrid.

This is the second read from the author's work and I am so happy that I picked up this one. Right from the starting this was so freaking cute and adorable 😍 even better than the book 1 🤌🤌 the lead characters, omg I had fallen for both i would say as both were sassy and amazing in their own way of teasing and flirting with eachother. Even though these two knew eachother since childhood but making eachother realise that fact at 30 was cute, i would say 😁
The characters were funny and witty but also mature whenever the situation needed them to be. Such a unique and perfect combination i would say🤌
I can clearly say, I am a fan of Sarah Adams now.

3.5 ⭐️
The Enemy was a cute, sassy enemies-to-lovers book. I listened to the audiobook and it was good. It was dual narration and both narrators did a great job with pacing and inflection, really bringing both characters to life.

The story was fun. There weren't any heavy topics that were addressed, making it a light, easy-going read. Both MC were funny, June a bit more than Ryan, and were developed enough that that they were interesting and had some depth. The history between June and Ryan is sweet and I enjoyed the teasing they did with each other. The romance was slow building and was a closed door.

There were times where June's antics were a bit over the top and I wasn't overly impressed with the extended epilogue that seemed to come out of no where. There also wasn't much build up to the conflict and even the conflict was pretty mild and mostly glossed over (which would be good if you don't like a lot of drama).

Overall, I enjoyed this book. If you are looking for an easy, light read, this is a good find.

I did this book on audio and really enjoyed it. It had a wholesome & sweet vibe to it.

Ryan and June liked each other in high school but were too chicken to act on it. Years later they are still stuck in the same prank wars and still hung up on each other. It had a predictability that I didn’t mind as it was overall really sweet. Ryan has to really work for June to break down her walls and the epilogue is really sweet, I love that years later they still prank each other.

Thank you NetGalley for the ALC of this one, my opinions are my own.

This was okay for romance. I was having fun until it became the “I was teasing you because I liked you” bit. That trope really gets under my skin for personal reasons but over all the writing was great. Just wish it was a different premise

I really enjoyed going back to this world. I am not a huge fan of enemies to lovers but this one was cute. Predictable, yes. Heartfelt and comical, yes. Highly recommend!

The Enemy by Sarah Adams is Book 2 in her It Happened in Charleston series. I read book on, The Match and I immediately picked up The Enemy next! Sarah is such an adorable storyteller. Her banter, the characters, the storyline it just all comes together and pulls you in. You feel like you’re among friends while reading her books. These were the first two books I read by this author and she has quickly become an auto buy author for me! The Enemy was a second chance romance and I ate it up! Arch Nemesis to lovers and I was totally here for it!! I fell in love with Ryan and June. If you’re looking for cuteness, closed door romance that will tug on your heartstrings this book/series is definitely for you.

A huge thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for an early listening copy of The Enemy in exchange for my honest review. This was most definitely an enjoyable listen. The narrator did a fabulous job keeping you engaged with the storyline!

This was a reread and once again I loved the easy vibes that come with her books. There was the slight change in tone and spice level but not much of a change aside from that.

June and Ryan's chemistry was fire from the get go. The enmity was mostly done away with early on but the give and take was just the same 😄

I didn't like the female narrator's parts though, especially her male voice but I enjoyed it overall.

Thank you to Netgalley and Publisher for an ALC in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars!

Sarah Adams is the queen of romcoms and this is no exception! I giggled, I got teary, I belly laughed, I had a great time. Sarah Adams's books aren't especially deep but they are always fun and I think that is perfectly fine. Throughout reading them, I always feel like I would be friends with every one of her characters (and her too actually). Sometimes to write characters that are likable even in their flaws and cringey millenial-ness (am a cringey millenial, I support) isn't easy! Also loved the peek at When in Rome during the bonus epilogue!

Regarding the audiobook, the female narrator at times felt like the perfect voice for the character but at other time felt a bit grating in her annoyed-ness. Hard to say exactly but it was off-and-on for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and DreamScape Media for this ALC!

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ARC

I've liked several books by Sarah Adams previously and absolutely adored The Match and therefore had great expectations for The Enemy. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my hopes. I found the fmc annoying and childish. The mmc was alright, but I couldn't see any real relationship development between them. They were never really enemies either, but had a long lived rivalry because of a miscommunication which caused them to constantly play pranks on each other. I'd love a bit more background and character dynamics. There were some cute moments, but I felt they got lost in the story. That said I didn't dislike the book, but it's no new favorite of the author either. Still looking forward to her next work.
