The 12-Week DBT Plan is a comprehensive guide to Dialectical Behavior Therapy which provides content on implementing the skills of DBT themselves, but also some educational background on the efficacy and aim of DBT. The intention for the use of this 12-week guide is to allow the reader to gain the skills to live in a more emotionally regulated state rather than allow their emotions to guide their life and choices. McBee splits your time equally into the core concepts of DBT: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. As a child/adolescent mental health therapist, I went through this guide/workbook in the mindset of a clinician looking for tools that may be helpful for use in sessions with clients, or as a potential book recommendation for clients (or, even friends and family) who are ready to do more independent work on their own.

Some of the content I enjoyed in particular was the review of "emotion mind, reasonable mind, and wise mind", as this is a concept I introduce often in individual and group therapies - McBee provided a more extensive take on "learning to hear wise mind", which I really appreciated. I find that clients can become frustrated or are even resistant to learning or attempting "mindfulness" as they may believe it to be an intimidating or difficult task. However, this can largely be a misconception, and McBee's presentation and description of mindfulness, as well as the techniques provided for the reader to practice mindfulness, were very well done. Finally, I will definitely go back to McBee's chapter 6 - "Learning to Accept What You Cannot Change", as I really value the insight into radical acceptance, willfulness, and willingness, which once again can be tough concepts for some clients to wrap their heads around. Overall, I thought this was a helpful guide written in language that is easy to comprehend for those who are not as well-versed in DBT as others, making it a nice tool for those looking to do some independent DBT work. It can also be used as a tool for clinicians working with clients or to strengthen a clinician's toolbox, skillset, or ability to describe these concepts in sessions.

Thank you to NetGalley, Callisto Publishing, and Valerie Dunn McBee, LCSW for providing an early digital ARC of this book for my honest review!

This was a wonderfully comprehensive book. It covered so many of the topics I've covered in therapy over the years. Some of the acronyms were a bit of a stretch but I did like the charts and exercises.
