In Real Life is a thoughtful and visually stunning graphic novel that explores online gaming, friendship, and real-world issues like labor rights and economic inequality. Through the story of Anda, a teen who becomes involved in an online multiplayer game, Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang introduce big ideas in a relatable, engaging way.
The illustrations by Jen Wang are vibrant and expressive, adding depth to the characters and contrast between the virtual and real worlds. Anda’s journey—both online and offline—feels honest and empowering, especially as she learns to question systems and stand up for others.
While the story is short and some themes could have been explored more deeply, it’s a great conversation starter, especially for young readers curious about ethics in gaming and global connectivity.
Overall, In Real Life blends social commentary with heartwarming storytelling, making it both entertaining and meaningful.

I'm not sure I fully understood this because I don't play computer games. I loved the artwork and the expressive faces of the characters. I'm sure there's an audience for this title, but it's not me.

Not a bad graphic novel but I can't say I was impressed with it. I didn't like the introduction. Info overload that was not necessary. The art was pretty good. I liked that Anda was not some perfect model looking girl. The characters are not perfect and that was a big plus.
Liza's character made little sense to me. She was from Australia but spoke an English/Spanish mix. It was weird. And the going to the school to get girls to try out for a guild that they still had to pay for...who travels for stuff like that?!
I loved the imperfections and struggle for the Anda and her moral dilemma.
