There were a couple of very interesting and useful sections within this book.
The analyse the book section gave a calculation to establish whether your book stood a chance of being seen. The editing section was also helpful in that it highlighted the costs of editing, how to identify an editor and what to send to establish whether a particular editor would be right for your book and if you could work with them on that project.
Overall this is a very useful resource for those contemplating self publishing. It identifies key areas with helpful pointers and especially some of the costs involved. That alone is possibly one of the main factors that many aspiring authors do not consider.
I received this copy from NetGalley upon request as I was curious about the content and material.
Unlike peer books running into 300 or more pages, this book succinctly lays out a best practice to follow. Looking through the author’s profile shows that he is a prolific author so something must be working!
The book is meant for new writers and presents the Do this not that style of guidance. It does not dwell on writing rather the editing, preparing for, and publishing nuances. He spends significant time on Kindle (KDP) and the reasoning behind hiring specific tasks (TL;DR - graphics design and editing).
My reasons for 4 stars are:
1. Too much self-promotion about author’s complementary services.
2. A flowchart/checklist would add picture to prose
3. A chapter on lessons learned would be good (to expand upon the $7 vs $1000 decision and others like it)
Yes! Yes! Yes! This book is packed with so much useful material. This is the nitty-gritty of self-publishing. It is everything you wanted to know, and everything you didn't know you needed to know, about publishing books independently.
The presentation is clear and concise. And not only is the information in the book enlightening, it's also interesting. It held my attention throughout.
Once you get your novel written, before you take any steps towards self-publishing, read this book! It delivers exactly what it promises, and does it without excessive or convoluted rhetoric. This is a new favorite it my writing craft arsenal.
This title is a great and informative resource for newcomer and established authors who want to give self-publishing a try.
It has answers for many of the questions that spring to mind when we talk about self-publishing including audio books, covers, audiences, etc.
The prose is clear and the advice is easy-to-follow - Roberts has included a few affiliation links. which is understandable.
This is a good resource; not hundred per cent and not very nuanced, but very handy and comprehensive.
This is a wonderfully comprehensive book on the world of self publishing.
It has answers for everything you could possibly ask, along with things you wouldn’t have even thought of. It’s helpful to the point that I would call it indispensable. Especially if you’re only just starting out and unsure as to how to go about self publishing.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who is looking to self publish, whether you’re a first timer or a veteran.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own and I am posting them voluntarily.
I have always dreamed of writing my own book and this book was just so amazing how well it helped lay out what that would look like! I absolutely adored the way it was laid out and the information given.
I'm so glad I discovered Dale's book. I find the content to be super helpful and explained in an easy-to-understand way. I plan to apply his tips ASAP with my writing. I will suggest this title to many. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
