I loved this dark cosmic horror novel. It’s written beautifully with horror elements that are vidid and terrifying. Fans of HP Lovecraft will enjoy this dark, action-packed story based on a fictional lost journal of HP Lovecraft (though you don’t need to be familiar with Lovecraft’s work to enjoy this book). Looking forward to the next in the series!
This book is written so well and I was indulged in it through the book. All the chapters are well written and takes you deep into the world.
The author’s ability to describe emotions, characters, and settings in a this way is so impressive. This book stands out for its magical and mystical storyline, set in an enchanted world that blends reality with fantasy. The journey is packed with adventure and keeps you engaged from start to finish.
I liked this storyline and would recommend you to give it a try. The mystical creatures all over gives it a very adventurous plot.
I really enjoyed the dynamic between the characters, specially the sisters added a lot of humor with their lighthearted conversations. Along with the human characters, there are various other creatures that really bring the magic to life. There are some truly powerful moments throughout the story and you really feel the magic and the emotions what the character feels.
For new readers, the detailed vocabulary might feel a bit much at first, but the writing is still captivating. The mystery of the unfolding plot keeps you wanting to turn the pages and dive deeper into the story. The glossary provided by the author makes it very easy to understand the mysterious world and keep on reading it.
If you’re into fiction and fantasy, this is definitely a great pick with amazing storytelling and fantastic characters and magical elements.
Christian A. Brown has written a beautifully written page turner.I loved reading this book, and look forward to reading more from this original author.
I feel like I need to go back and reread this book. There was so much depth to the characters and scenery, I feel like I might have missed a lot of things. I didn't know cosmic horror would be something I enjoyed as much as I did. This is another book where the author likes to stretch their vocabulary muscle and may make some readers feel unworthy. I don't think big fancy words always do the justice some authors think they do (Not this author, but others). I want to go back through this book cause I feel like once I was done, I forgot a lot of what happened. It's a fun read, you can breeze through it pretty quickly, but like me, you'll miss some stuff.
This is an urban fantasy that merges cosmic horror with mythology to create a thrilling read. The story unfolds in a gritty, baroque world of gothic vibes and ancient powers, where the stakes for survival are constantly escalating. This dark fantasy is a well executed story of sinister forces versus a group of unlikely heroes.
The world-building is incredible, the environment feels both eerie and expansive. The inclusion of mythologhy adds depth to the looming apocalypse.
The characters are complex and captivating and I cannot wait to see them evolve in the later books. Their powers, tied to the monstrous entities they oppose, offer fascinating dynamics as they grapple with their inner darkness and past traumas.
While the pacing is moderate, the writing style might require some adjustment, particularly in the way it layers the many events in the book. However, once readers get accustomed to it, they will find the story both gripping and emotionally charged. With strong characters, a well-crafted plot, and a universe with so much potential, this book serves as a perfect first installment in what promises to be an exciting series.
themes include - found family, teamwork, coming of age, dealing with the past and the consequences of power.
A captivating mix of cosmic horror and urban fantasy! As an experienced fantasy reader, I enjoyed the intricate world-building and the characters' developing abilities. New to cosmic horror, I found the eerie, unsettling scenes unforgettable—perfect for spooky season or any time of year.
Ana was my favorite character, and I appreciated how the story explores trauma's role in shaping the cast. The prose is rich and beautifully crafted, rewarding those who take their time with it.
The atmospheric writing creates a gothic, immersive world. Though it may take time to adjust to the complex style, the narrative flows with well-paced action, natural dialogue, and themes of identity, trauma, family, and power. Malachi and Brock’s evolving bond, with hints of romance, was especially compelling, and Ana’s resilience stood out.
This genre-spanning story blends horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and mythology, with high stakes, hidden secrets, and apocalyptic threats. I can’t wait to see how the characters evolve and what’s next in the series!
No doubt about it, this is a book that demands all your attention. Taking influence from Lovecraft, the vocabulary used might throw some readers off initially, and it did take me a while to get my head in the game and around the flowery language.
The worldbuilding is captivating, and the writing immersive, depicting the dank, gritty atmosphere, and team of arcane characters. I was especially fascinated by Brock and Malachi's budding relationship, though all the characters are interesting.
This book draws elements of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and folklore together to create a unique paranormal thriller that is rammed full of action, secrets, trauma, magic, and so much more. If you enjoy any of these genres and want a fully immersive read, shut yourself away with Raven's Cry.
If you're a big fan of Lovecraft's works (and the genre that spawned from them), and urban fantasy then you'll most likely like this book. The book was atmospheric. It was dark and tense at times, yet heartwarming in parts when it came to the interactions of the protagonists as they find each other amidst the most chaotic moments of their lives. This is a YA novel with a strong emphasis on romance, which isn't really my cup of tea, so I kept wishing there was a bit more action scenes, but that's more of a subjective thing coming from me. If you're into the YA romance genre then I highly recommend you check this book out.
The Lovecraftian elements were what had me interested the most, and the urban fantasy trappings in which it was put into. The way the characters keep developing their individual powers had me hooked and would love to see how they keep progressing in the future. I couldn't help but get a bit of an "anime" vibe from it! Raven's Cry felt a bit like a setup to the next book, which just means that I'll have to wait until the sequel is out to get my action fix, but the way the story seems to be developing, I think my cup will be overflowing with it! Don't get me wrong—I also can't wait to see how the main protagonists' bonds will strengthen (and/or potentially break?) in the sequel!
Overall, very fun read that you should consider picking up, even if you think that some elements might not be for you.
A wonderful blend of cosmic horror and urban fantasy! As a seasoned fantasy reader, I really enjoyed the world and the abilities that the main characters began to manifest. As a new enthusiast of the cosmic horror genre, I very much enjoyed the spooky scenes! There were so many eerie moments that I reflected on, long after having finished the chapter. A perfect book to read during spooky season! Though this book can be enjoyed any time of the year.
I enjoyed all of the characters (though I must admit that Ana was my favorite Aspect). I loved that we were given insight as to the checkered history of many of the characters. The trauma that some of them endured in the past significantly shaped the characters that we follow today.
The prose is wordy at times but beautifully done. I took my time reading through this book because I wanted to appreciate the writing (as well as the story telling).
As a reader who has not yet been acquainted with the works of H.P. Lovecraft, I admit that reading Raven’s Cry inspired great curiosity and now I find myself eager to read his original works as to glean more backstory to the Lovecraftian monsters that appear in Raven’s Cry. I am eager to learn more about The Great Cthulhu.
Well written and with an intriguing plot line, Raven’s Cry is a great set up for the rest of the series and I can’t wait to see how Malachi, Brock, Ana, Cal, Lenny, and the Aunties work together to combat the apocalypse.
Synopsis:
In a gritty urban fantasy world steeped in baroque shadows, blending Indigenous myth with cosmic horror, four witches known as the Aspects are Earth’s last defense against the rapacious Outer Gods. Their blood pulses with a monstrous fusion of their essence and that of these dread entities, granting them dominion over elemental forces. This impending apocalypse, The Great War, draws ancient allies and enemies into its cosmic vortex.
Gabriel Mothmann, CEO of MANN Inc., emerges as a potential yet enigmatic ally in this conflict. Even the spirit of H.P. Lovecraft remains tied to this world through a macabre relic. As the stakes rise, hidden truths break free, and allegiances tremble, especially that of Leng—a being twisted by the Outer Gods’ malevolence. Yet, this tortured alien may be one of the fiercest champions for humanity. However, Octavia Mothmann, Gabriel’s power-thirsty sister who is hell-bent on calling forth the Deep One himself, could pose the most formidable danger. With humanity teetering on a precipice, the Aspects are faced with a dual battle—against both the monstrous Outer Gods and their own horrifying inner reflections.
Feedback:
I’m so sorry, I had to DNF this book, so I couldn’t give a full review here or on other platforms. The writing style isn’t for me. There are too many adjectives in a single sentence and the paragraphs are too lengthy. I couldn’t get past a few pages. Again, I apologize. I really tried.
Set in a world full of enchantment, this is the story of a group of unlikely allies who are thrown into the task of essentially saving humanity. As our heroes are coping with their new responsibilities and newfound powers, the Outer Gods are preparing for a war against them.
My thoughts:
The storyline is fairly complex in the way I find some fantasy books to be (which is why I do not typically gravitate towards the fantasy genre) but I was actually finding that it was pretty easy to follow. The author put a lot of effort into the character development, which definitely helped me as the reader to keep track of everyone. The writing is very descriptive, which sets a vivid and clear atmosphere. I enjoyed the relationship between Malachi and Brock and I was surprised how quickly I became invested in their story. The ending definitely left me with mixed feelings, but does make me want to continue with the series. The story is very unique and has a lot to offer!
This book was absolutely fantastic! The author is so amazing at world building and does it so well that you have to pay attention or you'll miss something. I absolutely loved the Sci Fi theme mixed with Paranormal and Mythology. It gives very deep into multiple storylines with each character and their own individual journeys. The twist was so unexpected but a great touch! If you are wanting a book to captivate your mind and keep you gasping for more, then this is your book! What a great opening book for me to read of this author and I'm definitely excited to read more of his work!
This empowering, and very well worded magical story, takes you on a very vivid journey. What would you do if you were the last defense, I know I would not be as brave or strong. Each of these characters are very much filled with descriptive language, emotion, and raw power, not a single one is the same, and their stories are definitely their own. You will find this literature to be for a more attentive, and mature audience. This is not for someone unable to give it the full attention. One of the highlights of this story was the writer was able to really portray every single scene, fights, struggles, romances, pain, it was like you were standing right besides them watching them go through every single step. Another favorite was the vast culture appreciation that was used, everyone had a different background, the story reminded me of the first nation meets Southern Folklore. I say first nation as I am currently teaching my kids about Native American history and it hit the bullseye. This story has a character for everyone, and it is a perfect story to read during the fall, or even Halloween when things are getting spooky.
The way the author uses language to fluidly describe emotions, characters, and settings is truly remarkable. This book is a perfect example of that, with its magical and mystical storyline. Set in an enchanted world, with worlds both within and beyond the realms of reality, the reader is taken on a journey filled with adventure.
I loved the chemistry between Brock and Malachi, and the sisters were a delight with their amusing conversations. There are also many other creatures in this book, alongside humans. This is where the real magic and mysticism of the story come to life, with powerful and beautiful moments shining through.
However, for new readers, the rich and illuminating vocabulary used to describe each scene might feel a bit overwhelming. Despite this, the language is beautifully crafted, keeping readers hooked. The mysterious unfolding of the storyline also draws you in, making it hard to put down as you keep reaching for just one more chapter.
I'm eagerly awaiting the next part, as I’m still getting to know the stories and characters drawn from ancient Roman, Greek, and other civilizations. It's a new and exciting experience to read a fictional tale with so much depth, while also enjoying the adventures that come with it.
This is definitely a fantastic read for fans of fiction and fantasy, as well as those looking for a richly detailed story with compelling characters. With Halloween approaching, this could be a perfect pick for book clubs and bibliophiles alike.
This story starts with an introduction to Ana one of the Aspects, the reader is then taken on a journey to Canada and it's indigenous people's (wich I found very interesting).you are then taken on a whirlwind of magic monster and ailens. It's fast paced and thrilling. Every character past and present is well written 👌 (I'm drawn to Steve and Lang myself). The fight scenes are so good and details are top notch, the twists and turns keep the reader riveted the writing is exceptional and a must read for anyone who enjoys fantasy syfi horror. Thoroughly enjoyed.
A novel that will resonate with readers of cosmic horror. The author presented an interesting story concept, mixing First Nations beliefs with Lovecraftian imagery, something I personally have never read before and was very intrigued by. I enjoyed the character development that was happening and found the characters to be well rounded and believable. I did find myself struggling to stay engaged with the story at times as the author really seems to enjoy demonstrating his mastery of descriptive language and is not afraid of the thesaurus. While I did enjoy the world building that the author crafted this one, I found the writing style to just be a bit too over the top and distracting for my tastes.
A big thank you to NetGalley and the author for allowing me to read an advanced review copy of this title free of charge. I"m leaving an honest review voluntarily.
This story is OUT OF THIS WORLD!
I don't know if I can express how awesome this storyline is and give it its full justice!
Christian Brown knows how to write an In-Depth storyline. Although there are many many characters, each one has been well written with their own backstories, characteristics, qwerks, strengths and weaknesses. And not two are alike. He also really sets the scenes with a very detailed description of the setting with alot of emotion - which really makes you feel like you are right there.
It gave me goosebumps and chills on many occasions although this story and I can't wait for the next book already!
I would suggest to anyone who wants to be blown away to read this immediately!
I had a very hard time getting into this book. It seemed like a whole lot was happening all at once and it’s definitely the type of book that requires undivided attention and maybe even doing tabs and taking notes.
I will say that the storyline did intrigue me and for that I give it a 4 star.
Thank you so much for letting me arc read!
So......a lot of things happened in this book. I think I'm still a little confused. I felt the writing and the plot were jagged which is unfortunate because the synopsis is right up my alley. Maybe this just wasn't the right kind of book for me.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
