New York Nico's Guide to NYC is a comprehensive guide to iconic locations in NYC. Divided by borough, it covers a little bit of each corner of the city by a native New Yorker.
"From the “unofficial talent scout of NYC,” filmmaker, and social media icon New York Nico comes the only NYC guidebook you’ll ever need—a beautifully designed, photo packed celebration of the greatest city in the world, showcasing Nico’s top 100 New York institutions, shops, and eateries and the characters who shape them."
Let me start by saying I have unfortunately not been able to visit New York YET. I most certainly plan to, and this book only made me more excited for when I'm able to. This guide, far from being your typical tourist manual, offers a refreshingly offbeat, insider perspective of New York City. You could feel the authors love for the city that never sleeps through his writing. It is perfect for visitors and New Yorkers alike! New York Nico covered a wide range of places you must visit, from the must-see tourist spots to the hidden gems. I appreciated the back story he provided of the business owners I was introduced to while on the journey of reading his book. He wrote of them more as friends than as someone who had just met.
I found this guide exceptionally easy to read as it was broken down by boroughs and neighborhoods. It covered a wide variety of themes such as food, night life, and even some spots for the best "people watching." The photographs and illustrations that accompanied each location combined with the author's detailed writing truly immersed you at each stop.

This is a wonderful look at New York hot spots and holes in the wall. As a new kind of travel book that doesn't feel too hokey, New York Nico has done a great job at enticing tourists to visit more local spots.
his book is not your typical guidebook which tells you about the popular places to go, but more of an insiders guide to off the beaten track places within the five boroughs of New York City. Here you can find a locksmith in Manhattan,a comic shop in Brooklyn, a pizza place in any of the boroughs and so much more.
Nico has personally visited every one of the locations listed in this book and most, if not all, numerous times. His recommendations are not just based on the quality of whatever is being sold at at the location but on the caliber of the people who own or run each establishment as well. It is more than just about suggesting good places to go in New York City, it's about sharing a little New York City history as well.
New York Nico's Guide to NYC by New York Nico was obtained directly from the publisher and I chose to review it. I am not a New York City resident but I have been there several times, with no guidebook or anything, just 'winging" it. As a non-New Yorker, it has been fun to visit the city on occasion and it is always on my bucket list to go back to. This author does an outstanding job of capturing the spirit of New York City and its longtime citizens and pointing out places people should visit in all five boroughs. Speaking of boroughs, he even gives a brief synopsis of each one. I now need to ponder if I need to buy a hardcover edition of this book to use as a coffee table book or to share with my one acquaintance who lives there, to go over the checklist to see if he has heard of most of these places.
5 Stars
I have been following New York Nico on social media for years and was thrilled to see he put out a book! As a non-New Yorker, it has been fun to fall in love with all of the local nyc celebs as Nico shines his light on their individuality. He does a fabulous job of capturing the spirit of New York City with his lens.
This is a perfect coffee table book to set out a pour over for hours. I’m excited to grab a hard copy when it comes out!

I feel like when you leave NYC you’re supposed to join all the haters and be glad you’ve left the hell hole. That’s not me, I still love it and miss it almost daily. New York Nico’s was a great trip of nostalgia for me, and even a few heartbreaks for places I never knew existed, and won’t get to visit. Almost 30 years in NYC and there were still places to explore.
Anyway, I love guides like this. You get one interested and interesting person’s take on a place and you can dip in and out as you like. There are so many winning spots in this book and most are largely not on the instagramers’ hit list that makes visiting so many places annoying.
It has a great design that allows each featured business to really shine and I love that it’s in 4 color.
HarperCollins gave me this title for a review, but my opinion is all mine.
