A short but exciting read about mental health and weird experiments done on people's brains, creepy government conspiracies and rich people with way too much money. There is a sequel but by itself it has a fairly satisfying ending.
I read this book when it first came out a long time ago, and I really enjoyed it! In fact, I booktalked it to many of my high school students. I'm going to look up the series and maybe buy it for my current library.
The novel begins as Sarah, the protagonist, is hooked up to a machine that will probe her brain to erase her memories. This will allow her to begin with a clean slate. Before her procedure can begin, the electricity at the facility mysteriously goes out, and in the chaos, someone slips something to Sarah. When she returns to her room, she discovers 3 pills were given to her with the instructions to take 1 every 24 hours. Without questioning, Sarah takes the first pill and then the facility is invaded by an armed force. Sarah is able to escape and teams up with a computer hacker, Thomas, who happens to be working with his father, who was hired to infiltrate the facility. As Sarah and Thomas work together to figure out what is really going on in the facility, and the true reason Sarah's memories were being erased, more questions are raised than answers. Secrets are uncovered and Sarah's memories begin to return as the novel comes to a thrilling conclusion.
I would classify this book as a thriller and I was intrigued by the mystery that slowly unfolded as the action picked up pace. I wasn't a fan of the romance, as the story takes place in a little over a day and the two mains are already claiming their love for each other - I felt it was more a crush on Thomas's side as he discovers who Sarah was before she was sent to the facility and I didn't feel Sarah, who was very independent (even before she was sent to the facility) would have fallen so quickly for someone she knew so little about.
I currently have a number of students who are looking for high action adventure, thriller espionage books. They've read through everything I have so now need to expand that collection beyond, Alex Rider, Young James Bond to name a couple. This book will deliver. It's readable, fast and fun. And, Incognita is out, so even better.
