The woman is dead, stabbed in the heart. The note next to her, held to the floor by a knife blade, reads “ten green bottles”. DI Lauren Pengelly and DS Matt Price have only begun their investigation when another body is found, killed in the same way. This time the note reads “nine green bottles”. Both victims are women and both were former police officers. Pengelly and Price are desperate to find the serial killer before another officer is murdered. Then they link the deaths to the Camborne Station and long past behaviors and cases. Could the killer be someone they know? Or work with?
Sally Rigby’s excellent Cornwall murder mysteries are must reads! A cast of characters you want to meet and an atmospheric location combine with a plot full of surprises to make The Camborne Killings impossible to put down! I cant wait for the next in this outstanding series! 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and Sally Rigby for this ARC.
The body of a woman found murdered in her barn begins a thrilling hunt for a serial killer. Detective Lauren Pengelly and her partner Matt Price and the team, are called in to investigate what seems like a random murder of an ex police officer but when another body with the same m.o. is found, they have begin to suspect there may be more deaths.
The story was interesting and twisty, my only problem was the authors repetitive nature, but other than that the book holds your interest and keeps you reading. Thanks to Storm Publishing and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. I enjoy her work.
Another brilliant book in this Cornwall series. I have read and loved every one and this is just as amazing as the first three. I love the dynamic with Lauren and her team. Fast paced storyline that gripped me from the first page and didn’t let go. A must read and a great author if you haven’t read any of her work yet. I highly recommend this book/series and author. A solid 5 stars from me.
A difficult case for Lauren and her team, as ex police officers are murdered. Fast paced throughout with unexpected revelations. Excellent from start to finish. I received an ARC copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Another great mystery, I devoured it in two days. They’re such great stories and have you gripped from the very beginning. I cannot wait to get the series for my friends because everyone will love it. It’s not based at one age group, all ages and all genders will love it.
I didn’t give it five stars as they are my truly wow books and books I cannot get over however, I really enjoyed this and will definitely be recommending it to friends.
Perfect book to get me out of my reading slump. Post on Instagram will follow
Cornwall Murder Mystery Book 4.
I was hooked from start to finish. It kept me reading til the early hours. Loved it.
A chilly morning mist blankets the Cornish countryside, shrouding the barn in an eerie silence. Inside, a woman lies motionless, her unseeing eyes fixed on the rafters above. A blood-stained note flutters in the breeze. Her death is only the beginning…
Detective Lauren Pengelly and her partner Matt Price are called to investigate a grisly murder outside Penzance. They quickly identify the victim as Carmel Driscoll, a former police officer, and find a cryptic note reading “Ten Green Bottles” next to her body – words from an old English nursery rhyme.
When a second former officer is found murdered with the note “Nine Green Bottles” nearby, Lauren and Matt realise they could be dealing with a serial killer. As they race to uncover the deeper connection between the victims, they discover this quiet part of Cornwall harbours some dark secrets. The key could lie in a decades-old case, thought to have been buried long ago…
With officers' lives on the line and rumoured corruption reaching the highest levels of the police, Lauren doesn't know who to trust. Could the killer be hidden in Lauren's force… maybe even within her team? And can she catch the monster before they strike again, or will she become the final verse in this twisted countdown?
Three and a half stars.
The fourth outing for DI Lauren Pengelly and DS Matt Price. Two female former police officers have been found murdered in identical circumstances with cryptic notes left besides their bodies indicating that they may only be the first two of possibly ten murders.
Detailed investigation suggests the only link between the two women, who lived in different parts of Cornwall, is that they both worked out of Camborne Police Station in the 1990s. With the fear of further murders happening in quick succession, the team have to find out the truth fast, and it might lead them to higher echelons of their own force. But with the truth buried back 30 years ago it won't be easy.
This series is growing on me, Matt is becoming less of a smug git (albeit his sanctimonious mansplaining to Lauren of historical sexism and harassment of women in the police was a bit OTT), and Lauren is becoming a more rounded character.
Looking forward to the next one, although I would like to see more development of personal lives, at the moment its a bit same-same Matt works and can't be with his daughter Dani, Matt, Dani, Lauren and her two dogs go to the park, rinse and repeat each book.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley.
DS Matt Price is happy to see an old colleague from Lenchester, DC Ellie Naylor, when she comes to visit him in Penzance. Matt is called away to a crime scene and along with his boss, DI Lauren Pengelly, they have a puzzle to solve. There is a cryptic note left on the body of Carmel Driscoll, a former Police Officer - saying "10 Green Bottles"! This leads Lauren and Matt down a rabbit hole of finding answers to this clue and how it connects when a second body is found with a second cryptic note - "9 Green Bottles"! I love how the characters interact with one and other and their working dynamic is great. It is well written and the locations' descriptions made me see the place in my mind. All the sub plots come together to lead to an ending that I never saw coming.
An interesting story with likeable characters. Not everyone is brilliant as in many mysteries. Good hard police work to solve the crime. Good read.
A solid police procedural with an excellent crime solving team full of great characters who work well together 9as a cast, not always as a force!) and a great mystery to solve before 1 green bottle is reached!
Have you been waiting for the next Cornish murder mystery? Wait no more. The Camborne Killings is here.
I have found a new team to root for! Matt is excited to have his pal, Ellie who is on vacation, join his team to solve murders that are occuring. HIs boss Lauren is a little skeptical, but can't deny her talents in finding information.
When former police officers start to die, it ultimately ties back to corruption in the ranks, as well as a killer who has nothing to lose, and a scorned woman who feels she had everything to gain.
I loved not only the partnership of Matt and Lauren, but the way the entire team worked together to find information to solve the crimes. While many of the clues link to the past, there is no denying that there is something sinister going on in the present, and the team work to find a way to stop the murders.
I really enjoyed this and it makes me want to go back and read the previous book for more back story on some of the characters. I will for sure look for more from this author.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the opportunity to read the book and provide my opinions.
2* DNF - the writing is amateurish and there's no way 2 completely separate police forces would/could cooperate like this. Seriously, the 'telling', the dialogue, the thoughts of the characters are on a GCSE- English level, not a professional one. Had to leave this 2 chapters in.
As with all Sally Rigby’s books, this is a thoroughly enjoyable read and is recommended.
If you are not familiar with her work, you are missing out.
I found this a gentle easy read although advertised as a crime thriller.
That said i did enjoy it. Set in Cornwall, interesting characters and a decent storyline.
Part of a series written by this talented author but could easily be read as a stand alone..
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
I read this very quickly, as the writing is not complex (and, at times, overly simple), but the storyline was generally engaging. With former police being killed and few clues, the DS (Matt Price) and DI (Lauren Pengelly) hold several brief interviews with minimal progress, but each time they return to the station, the leads almost magically appear courtesy of a visiting constable doing the computer research. These and other instances lacked depth, but did create interesting developments in the plot. The ending did not surprise me, but there were details I could not have guessed. Overall, I easily entered the world of the Penzance Police and escaped my own.
Thank you to Storm Publishing, Netgalley, and the author for early access to this novel.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Storm Publishing, for letting me read and review an advanced copy of this book, ‘The Camborne Killings’, by Sally Rigby.
This is another great British ‘whodunit’ by Sally Rigby, with Detective Lauren Pengelly and DS Matt Price, along with his friend, Ellie, who is visiting, but takes an active roll. The murder of a retired cop is bad enough, but a note left beside the body insinuating that more killings are yet to be committed is troubling. As they find more retired officers being killed, the team discovers one of their own might be involved, and there is a mad dash to wrap up the case, before this serial killer claims more victims.
The plot is intriguing, the characters are believable, and the setting in Cornwall is nice. There is a nice plot twist, as well.
Picking up the next in the series with Detectives Lauren Pengelly and Matt Price was like picking up a conversation with some old friends.
The detectives are called to investigate a murder of a former police office - and the scene isn't pretty. She'd been beaten and strangely, there was a line from an old English nursery rhyme with the body. After finding another officer murdered (and yes, another line from the same nursery rhyme) the team realizes they may be dealing with a serial killer and need to act quickly before more people are killed. They have to uncover all of the connections and make some uncomfortable inquiries.
While I did have the ending fairly well worked out by the mid-point, I still found the book incredibly enjoyable.
Thanks to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and Sally Rigby for the eARC.
This was a great read! Fast paced, gripping from the very start and the characters are really well written; relatable, believable and likeable - except for the ones we’re not supposed to like!
A body is found, gruesomely murdered, with a note that simply says “10 green bottles”. Police detectives Lauren and Matt know how the song goes and know they have to act fast before the countdown continues and the body count rises.
This is the first book I have read in this series and whilst there is a little history between the characters that I am not aware of, it was minimal and didn’t affect my enjoyment of this book, which worked really well as a standalone. That said, I will be grabbing the first three books as I’m interested in the rest!
The plot is so good with a balance of police procedural and the personal lives of the main characters. Some brilliantly executed twists that kept me on my toes!
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Sally Rigby and Storm for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Set in Cornwall, filled with interesting characters, this is another good read in the series featuring DI Lauren Pengelly. The plotting is excellent and the pace just zips along nicely, with plenty of tension throughout. A very enjoyable read. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
