How to Fall by Jane Casey is a gripping YA mystery with plenty of twists! The story follows Jess, who’s determined to uncover the truth behind her cousin’s death, which everyone insists was an accident. But as Jess digs deeper, she realizes there are secrets no one wants to talk about. The small-town setting adds to the suspense, and the plot keeps you on edge with unexpected turns. Jess is a smart and relatable character, and her determination drives the story forward. If you love a good mystery with plenty of drama, this one’s worth checking out!
The is the first YA book from Jane Casey. The premise is intriguing with the concept of Jess looking like her dead cousin, and thus begins a mystery in which Jess seems much older than 16. Nice addition but there are equally good books out there with characters who act like teenagers.
I found How To Fall by Jane Casey to be a quick fairly enjoyable read but it was not without it's problems. The main issue is that for a mystery novel this book really needed a bit more, well, mystery. How to Fall just didn't have enough intrigue to really grab my attention. It swapped action for teen angst and feel into a lot of the YA clichés. The more annoying of these is the portrayal of every girl in this book apart from the main character being airhead bitches. This is one of my biggest bugbears when it come to YA. Having all the female characters be vapid bullies does nothing to increase the appeal of the main character. It is a basic way of creating conflict and I think this book deserved more than that. Characters are an issue through out. Jess is ok but boring, Will isn't interesting at all and every other secondary character is underdeveloped and weak. YA has moved on a lot over the years. it has developed into a genre that challenges and interests readers of all ages. How to Fall felt like a book from 10 years ago. I will not be continuing with this series.
