The Kiss of Deception was a book that easily submersed me into it's world. Although I am often not a fan of love triangles I thought this one was well executed. I also really liked the MC and how strong of a person she is on her own.

It took me a minute to settle in yo the story and follow the plot/characters but once I did, I really enjoyed this ro.antic fantasy.

Initially, an advance copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley.

The copy I'm reviewing now is a finished copy borrowed from the library.

I went into this read expecting to not like it based on some of the reviews and the fact that it's a love triangle. I don't like love triangles.

I'm going to be honest... this was good! It's written well! I found it easy to immerse myself in this world all the way until the end. Yes, there is a girl and two boys. Yet, it was clear to me at this point that Lia is clearly drawn to one. Either way, the romance aspect is really toned down, and I'm not mad at it. I loved being in this world. Lia is on a quest to figure out certain facts about herself. It's a mystery and I had hoped we would have gotten more of those details. It's alright. It's book one.

I'm just happy these characters weren't annoying.

The Kiss of Deception really excited me! It was a fun book to read and tough to put down (most of the time). Lia stole the spotlight for being such a badass, but I loved the side characters as well. This series is definitely one to watch out for!

Kiss of Deception The Remnant Chronicles Book 1 by Mary E. Pearson

497 Pages
Publisher: Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, Henry Holt and Co
Release Date: July 8, 2014

Fiction, Teen, Young Adult, Dystopian, Sci Fi, Fantasy, Royalty Fairy Tales, Folklore

Princess Lia is the First Daughter of Morgan. All First Daughters carry the Sight but Lia doesn’t have it yet. She is worried she will never have it. Preparing for her arranged marriage, she decides this is not the life she wants for herself and flees on horseback with her friend Pauline.

The book has a steady pace, and the characters are not very developed, and it is written in the first-person point of view from multiple perspectives. The story is based on misidentification by Lia. She chooses to run away from home but you know she is going to fall for the prince. There is a twist that I did not see coming and that made the book worth the read.

This book was requested when I was young and requested more books than I could possibly read. Sadly, I no longer have access to this book and my tastes have changed. Thus I will not be able to give feedback on this title.

I received a free copy from NetGalley. Not wanting to enter an arranged marriage, the princess runs away with her maid. Now the prince and an assassin have both found her and she's flirting with both. The story is okay, I'm not rushing to go get the second book, but if this is a type of novel you often read, I think you will like this one.

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson - this was on my NetGalley TBR forever. Somehow it kept getting pushed aside for other books, but I'm glad I made time to finally read it.

I go through waves of liking fantasy stories and then not wanting much to do with it for a while. This is a book that brought me out of a reading funk.

Lia was such a wonderful character. She grows a lot over the course of the story, from a runaway princess to a kind and hardworking girl. She's strong, intelligent and doesn't act all high and mighty. She tries so hard to lead a normal life now and blend in.

Lia gets involved in a love triangle and at first, during the audiobook, I couldn't figure out which guy was the prince and which was the assassin. The love interests push each other out of jealousy. And originally they each had their own reasons for searching for the princess. One for being angry that she ran from their arranged marriagr (sight unseen) and the other to kill her.

There's also a great cast of supporting characters like her best friend who ran away with her, the women who become like family at the inn and the local clergy.

The story is left on a cliffhanger and completely sets you up for book two. I'll be continuing the series via audiobook from my library in 2021. I need to see what happens, how this love triangle evolves and watch Lia grow even more!

This book honestly blew me away! I had no idea who to trust, and as soon as I thought I knew who was who, something else would happen to throw everything into chaos! Love this story, love the characters, and can't wait to continue.

Thank you for the opportunity to read The Kiss of Deception. Unfortunately, I did not download the book before it was archived in July 2014. I do not plan to finish the book.

I love fantasy fiction. It is a place where imagination can be gloriously unleashed to dizzying effect. I was looking forward to reading The Kiss of Deception and seeing what world it would take me to. It turned out to be a disappointment. This book really is all over the place. The world building is weak bordering non existent. This book could have been set on any world at any time because all it is about is boys and romance and kissing. I found it so boring as I read page after page of nothing. Literally nothing happens. Then to add insult to injury there is a lobe triangle which I struggle to get behind in the best of books. I gave it a good go by The Kiss of Deception was not for me.

As a fan of Mary Pearson, she shows her versatility between her previous books about futuristic biotechnology dilemmas and his novel of a fantastical setting of a young princess who is tired of the royal treatment and determined not to marry the suitor chosen by the parents. So she runs away with her trusted servant and they come upon a village. As do two other men. In a high fashion adventure the readers of Kiss of Deception will be on their toes trying to figure out who is good and who is evil. An excellent book, sure to be on the shelves of many libraries and bookstores.

Candy Smith's review Oct 26, 2018 · edit
it was amazing
4 highlights (Private)

I was intrigued from the very beginning. I wasn't sure what I was getting into but th ih s has been a popular book series all over social media and I was intrigued so I picked it up and started reading...until wee hours of the morning! I read until my eyes wouldn't stay open because I was engrossed in the story. It begins in Lia's POV but a little later in the story periodically it would add in The Prince and The Assassin POV and then it jumps to Kaden and Rafe, but here's the kicker: it doesn't tells you the identity of the Prince or the Assassin, you're left to a guessing game. At first I was so confused until I realized it was the author's intentions for you not to know. So I spent half of the book trying to guess and I was sure I had figured it out, I was shocked to find that out I was wrong, lol. That's what makes a great story; suspence, mystery, and intrigue.
I love Lia's character, she knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it,no matter t by e consquences... until those consequences start to affect those she cares about the most. Then she must decide if her choice to be free to make a life of her own outside of being royal and wanting to marry for love is worth more than the lives of those dearest to her...but she must act fast before someone makes the desicion for her.
Someone is deceiving her,one with good intentions and one with less than stellar intentions but not figuring this out may lead her on a path far worse than the one she ran away from. What could be worse than being forced to marry a Prince she never met who she assumes is an old toad? An assassin caught between love and obedience who was groomed to be loyal til death to his people and leader, who also happens to be her and the rest of the realm's biggest threat that no one saw coming!
I absolutely was engrossed in this story and immediately pick up book two after th ih s book ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger.

Everything about this book seemed up my alley. The cover is gorgeous, the title is compelling (who doesn't like deception?) and the premise seems like something I'd read in one sitting. Unfortunately I couldn't get through it. There have been a few books written in a similar style I've been able to read (The Dragonian series comes to mind), but this one missed me.

I've opened the ebook so many times thinking I'd not read it yet, and I inevitably close it and delete it from my device. Your mileage may vary!

I received this free eARC novel from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Lia is the First Daughter - the only daughter - of her people and because of that title, she is required to marry the Prince of Dalbreck. But Lia doesn't like tradition, and after being shunned at her request to meet the Prince in person before their wedding, Lia decides to take matters in her own hands.

She doesn't make it to her wedding. Instead, her friend, Pauline, and Lia make a run for it. Lia knows she is going to be hunted by her father's men, along with the kingdom of Dalbreck's men, but Lia just can't convince herself to marry a stranger for an alliance she had no say about it. That is not her life, and she wants to marry for love, rather than to avoid a possible war.

When they make their destination, Lia and Pauline get a job working at the pub and tavern in the town, and stay in a small, dusty room. Lia is loving it. She meets two newcomers after awhile and finds an attraction to both of them - for two different reasons. Because Rafe and Kaden are complete opposites, but both of them gain Lia's attention right away.

Lia is loving her new life full of hard work and no royal majesty's thrown her way. This is the life she has always wanted, and she made it happen.

But the two boys she likes? Yeah, neither one are who they say they are. In fact, one is the prince that she jilted. And the other is an assassin that was sent by Venda.

Things are about to drastically change for Lia, and she is going to have to decide how to handle everything to make sure it ends in the best way possible.

Oh, sneaky, sneaky, sneaky Mary E. Pearson. I swore I had it all figured out about the mystery of the two boys that appeared in Lia's life, but I was COMPLETELY wrong!!! And I am always never wrong!!! So kudos to Pearson, because I was so stunned and shocked and I LOVED it!!

This book was soo, soo, soo good! I am kicking myself for waiting three years to read it, but I really wanted to read the whole series together rather than waiting for it.

And honestly I'm glad I did because that ending was just so high tense and I cannot wait to see what happens! And now I don't have to because I have the second book in my hand.

I'm so glad that Lia decided to do what was best for her, and not for her father's business proposal to the neighboring kingdom. She is a person, she has feelings, and she deserves to make her own decisions rather than be bossed around by everyone around her. Plus she doesn't even have the gift that everyone wants her to have and that would have made for some awkward revelations down the road...

Both boys have their smoothness. I swear I knew who was who, but when it was revealed, I had it completely wrong! I did have my favorite boy out of the bunch, but I'm not even going into that for this review in case there are other readers out there like me who are behind the times, haha.

Overall, I enjoyed this story so much and will definitely be recommending it to other readers! And I'm very excited to get into the second book to see what adventures await for Lia!
