This book was a lovely read. Ellie's journey was provocative and fulfilling. My favorite part of the book was the beautiful imagery the author conveyed with her words. From a run down house to a beautiful sanctuary was quite a metaphor for Ellie's life and her journey. The romance was subtle yet impactful. Beautiful escapist romance.
- Inheritance
- Starting over
- Beautiful location
- Slow burn
- Single father
What a lovely and charming story! This book showcases family and starting over.
Three sisters have inherited their uncle's house in Provence. Two of them go to visit the estate and this is the book for one of them.
Ellie is dealing with a terrible loss and is hoping a change in scenery will help her heal. The author describes the countryside in such vivid details that I felt I was walking in fields of lavender.
Ellie befriends her new neighbor Julien, who is a single father. Theirs is an easy relationship, and very gradually turns into something very sweeet.
What a beautiful story!
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
The story is about three sisters who find out they’ve inherited a house in Provence from a relative they knew nothing about.
They decide to renovate it and then sell it. Ellie decides to stay and see work on the house, she is still coming to terms with the loss of her baby and feels that this will help her.
When she meets her neighbour and his son, there is an attraction between them. But the timing isn’t right.
I the setting, descriptions of the house and the food, as well as the animals. .
I recommend this book.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
Ellie and her siblings inherit an old house in Provence from a family member they never knew existed. Ellie's lif has had a hug upheavel and a change of location and pace might help to set her back to right; so she decides to stay and get the property ready for sale. Ellie starts to fall in love with the house and the area, and before she knows it she finds herself drawn to the neighbour, Julien. Ellie tells herself not to get involved with Julien as she will not be there long, but the heart wants what the heart wants.
This was a lovely escape to Provence, the scenery was vivid and the characters were wonderfully written. I will definitely read more books by this author, I look forward to the next one.
A lovely story in a beautiful setting. The main characters are both still recovering and grieving past losses and the story handles these both realistically and gently. I enjoyed this very much.
I love a book set in Provence this didn’t disappoint. The descriptions of the area were wonderful. You could smell the lavender and warmth in each page. Ellie’s character grew with each warm day and glass of wine. Julian let light and laughter in too and together they began to mend each other without even realising. It was just a gorgeous book. I would like to hear more about the reclusive artist and also to read Laura’s story too with the estate agent. This could be a wonderful series about the sisters.
This was just a nice sweet love story. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. Its a quick read. If you're looking for a relaxing book this is it.
Falling for Provence by Alison Roberts is the first book in a new series called A year in France and this book was set in Provence in France and was a beautifully heartwarming book, with wonderful characters especially as Alison is a new author to me and I am so glad I had a chance to read it. I loved this book from the very first few pages and loved the cover - very eye catching!
WoW this book is so good........and if you have a dream to move to France Go for it....I did and love it here.
I highly recommend this book.........Just beautiful.
Big thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood books for my ARC.
In this fun modern romance novel, readers join Ellie Gilchrist after a series of tragedies have shaken her world. Having recently inherited La Maisonette in Provence with her sisters, she goes to France to restore the house, but it seems like it might be more work than she had planned. With a guarded neighbor Julien, his young son, and several rescued animals now a part of her life, Ellie’s life has changed for the better, and her new relationships are just what she needs even if it has a time limit. The fantastic characters and beautiful setting against the semi-tragic backdrop of Ellie and Julien’s backstories are a fantastic juxtaposition. The characterization is incredibly strong, and the emotional tone of the novel is really powerful. Ellie’s backstory, while tragic, is handled tastefully and adds to the general stakes of the novel. Her growing relationship with Julien and his son is realistic and particularly charming to watch as the novel progresses, and Ellie’s self-growth is also rewarding to watch progress. The characters are the star of this novel, and Roberts’ skill with character development and setting really shine in her latest book, a fantastic, heartwarming, and emotional modern romance novel set in beautiful France.
This beautiful and poignant story will have you reading into the early hours, needing to know the conclusion.
Ellie and her sisters find they have inherited a small house in Provence, France, from an uncle they knew nothing about, Ellie and her older sister travel to look at the house, and decide that she can stay behind to help renovate, and get the house ready to sell.
She meets her new neighbour Julien, and his son Theo in an emotionally charged moment.
This starts a labour of love on the house and slowly but surely a healing process for Ellie but also Julien, and his son Theo.
Many thanks to Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read this arc copy via Netgalley. My opinion is my own.

As I share with you this, my honest review.
Ellie and her sisters inherit an old cottage in Provence from a relative they never knew. After traveling from Scotland, Ellie decides to stay and rehab the house before selling. Meeting her neighbor Julien and his son Theo, Ellie explores her own grief of the loss of a child and loss of herself. The setting of Provence, the townspeople, the special cottage, and Julien and Theo and provide Ellie a path back to life as she heals.
Who loves Provence more, me or Alison Roberts? I'm a sucker for all things France but Provence holds a special place in my heart. Even so, I thought this would be a cute, easy read but not something I'd be really drawn to. It was and easy read, but also much more.
I found myself drawn in to the old cottage, adorable dog, retro bicycle, sweetest little boy, and of course Ellie and Julien's story. I was surprised at how attached I got to the two main characters, and how engaged I was in the book. Ellie was much more developed and had more depth than I anticipated. I cared about her, felt pain with her, and smiled at her joy.
I haven't read from this author before. Her writing was lovely and transported me to one of my favorite places in the world. Truly, it was almost as thought I could smell the lavender and taste the pizza through the digital book! I wanted more of the town, wanted to get to know the townspeople more.
A couple storylines were unfinished and seemed unnecessary. BUT I realize this is the first in a series so I'm wondering if the subsequent books address those issues. I'll definitely be on the lookout for more by Alison Roberts!
TY Boldwood Books for the free digital ARC. Easily four-stars and has me dreaming of Provence!
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a beautiful story. I enjoyed reading it a lot!
This was a wonderful romantic read. What a great story, I loved everything about this book. The storyline, characters, and ending. It will not disappoint!
Three sisters inherit a rundown stone cottage in Provence. Ellie decides to stay on and clean it up to make it more saleable. She’s had a devastating tragedy in her life and when she meets the adorable son of her neighbour it brings back all sorts of memories but it also helps her and she finds herself falling in love with the boys dad, Julien. And she finds a lovely stray dog by nearly running him over with her new bike.
She then finds an old 2CV in the garage. It’s not all plain sailing but it’s such a lovely book and I really hope there’s a second one as I feel there’s some unfinished business 🤔
A lovely story with a little mystery running through it and romance. Beautifully described the author takes you around Provence and you are transported there. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
A really enjoyable tale that starts out with some elements of mystery… but soon turns into a beautiful tale interwoven with the characterful towns and villages of the south of france. Ellie, one of three sisters who mysteriously inherited a cottage from an uncle they didn’t know existed, is lost after a traumatic experience at home. She agrees to tidy up the cottage for sale, but slowly starts to unfold and grow in confidence. I loved the local charm and characters, including the rickety red bicycle, the 2CV and the local markets. A really enjoyable read. 4*
When Ellie and her sisters inherit a house in Provence from an uncle they have never even heard of before, she can have no idea of the impact it will have on her life. The plan was to tidy the place up and sell it straight away. Ellie and Laura head to the house just for a look and then to the local town. Ellie is surprised, even to herself, when she impulsively decides to stay in the house and do the renovations herself.
Ellie hasn't been doing anything on impulse of late, lost in grief following the tragic passing of her young child. So the fact that she is taking an interest in something is a good thing, but it isn't without challenges. She can barely speak the language, she is terrified of the thought of having to drive on the wrong side of the road and she doesn't know the first thing about renovating a house.
Along with the house, Ellie has inherited ownership of two donkeys, Coquelicot and Marguerite. One night she finds a small boy near the donkeys, and soon after she meets his father, who proceeds to berate her for neglecting the donkeys and tells her to fix the fences. It's not quite the introduction you would want when you just move into a house and you know no one.
Julien, the grumpy neighbour, has his own issues to deal with. He is raising his son, Theo, after his wife died in a car accident. Whilst he has support from his family, it is still a challenge given his career as a busy doctor. He is definitely not looking for any complications that might arise with the neighbour next day.
We witness Ellie as she slowly begins to breathe again, to begin to remember who Ellie the person is. The Ellie who used to be an artist, who loves to sit outside and watch the sunset, the Ellie who can open her heart to a small boy. She also finds herself looking after a stray dog called Pascal. In other words, we see her world expanding. The question is how much can Ellie allow herself to feel, especially seeing as she knows that she is only in Provence for the summer.
Now, if I had an unknown uncle who had a house in Provence, you can bet I would definitely be on my way there in a heartbeat. The author has obviously spent some time there, and was able to bring it to life in the pages. And yes, that means lavender for example, but it also means tiny details in the tiles in the town square, visiting the town market to try the local speciality, socca and so much more.
This is a gentle read for the most part, although there are some dramatic moments, particularly later in the book. It does take a little while to pick up, but to me that is quite clever in that it ties in with Elllie's healing and growth.
It turns out that this isn't my first read from Alison Roberts. I apparently read a previous Mills and Boon book by her more than 10 years ago. I love a good "wish you were here" novel, especially when it is set in France. I think the set up was there for another book connected to this one featuring Ellie's sister, which I will be reading.

Rating 4/5
Such a heart warming story, when Ellie inherits a house in Provence, she wasn't expecting to discover love as well, that is until she met her shy neighbour Julien. A real page turner, devoured it completely on a gloomy, wet afternoon, curled up on the sofa
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The characters were great and the description of the house and area were fabulous. It made me want to dive into the book and go there!
You couldn’t help but fall in love with Ellie and Julien’s story... and tge grief and heartache portrayed in this book were so raw and real it truly made me emotional. There were so many things to love about this book, it was heartwarming and cozy while also dealing with deeper things in life.
You will enjoy this book if you like:
• small town
• neighbours
• single father
• contemporary romance
• set in Provence, France
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing me with a free advance copy of this beautiful book. This is my honest and true opinion.
