This short story collection was exactly what I was hoping for and more. With the stories being short, the world building was impressive and I was able to quickly feel fully engaged for almost every story. Each time one story ended I was excited to see what Eliza Clark had in store for readers in the next one. These stories are equally humorous as they are completely bizarre and unsettling. If you already love Eliza Clark, then you will love this collection. The standout stories for me were Build a Body Like Mine, The Shadow of Little Chitaly, Extinction Event, and Shake Well.
Also to note, She’s Always Hungry touches on many sensitive topics and has a detailed content warning list at the end of the book.
Thank you Harper Perennial and NetGalley for an eARC of She’s Always Hungry in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Harper Collins and NetGalley for providing this arc in exchange for my honest review.
She’s Always Hungry is a collection of short horror stories covering a variety of topics from climate change, to disordered eating to grooming relationships. I really enjoyed Extinction Event and She’s Always Hungry, but some of the other stories fell flat for me. Overall, I think this is a great read for anyone interested in body horror and “weird lit.” And if you’re already an Eliza Clark fan I think you’ll love it!
I panicked when I was approved for this ARC because I didn't realize it was a collection of short stories and I typically dislike those.
Nobody is more shocked than I am that this was a 5 star read. I read it in one sitting and had many verbal outbursts throughout. Hollow Bones is definitely the stand out for me, the science fiction aspect was perfect.
This collection of short stories was so good and so creepy. It kept me creeped out and wanting to finish the book at the same time. I liked how it evoked so many feelings while reading it
Thank you to NetGalley, to the author, and to the publisher for this complementary ARC in exchange for my honest review!!!
She’s always hungry is a collection of short stories with themes of abuse, disordered eating, violence, and body horror. All the classic themes Eliza Clark is known for turned up a few notches. Laced in dark humor and often slow paced to falling into these stories are unsettling and leave you thinking of them long after finishing them.
I did feel myself struggling to get into a few of the stories that felt a bit more experimental to me. Mainly those dealing in apocalypse and or climate change themes giving them sci-fi elements which were hard to follow. The writing of these stories (hollow bones, extinction event, the king) were very stream of conscious and had no thorough line throughout. That may work for some people and some people may have fun with that, but they did not work for me.
My favorite stories in this collection are those dealing with the themes Clark is most known for. In build a body like mine we see what it’s like to deal with body dysmorphia and disordered eating through a new lens. In goth gf we see female dominance in the work place laced with issues of self harm. Nightstalker tells the story of a homoerotic friendship in the 1970s. Shake well is a horror story of grooming and sexual violence with a black market cure for acne that induces body horror. Much like Clark’s previous books they are dark and full of content warnings so I would proceed with caution.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy black mirror, rick and morty and feminist horror.
Thank you Netgalley and Harper perennial for this arc!
This was a strong collection of short stories, it had everything that I wanted and followed the theme perfectly. I enjoyed how good the characters were in each story and how Eliza Clark wrote this.
While short stories are not my jam, this collection made it totally worth it. Some stories are creepy, others thought-provoking, and some made me laugh. Standouts are the eggs that make you lose weight (yes, I found it funny); the Chinese delivery one was creepy to me! When a story is good, you are still thinking about it when you finish it. There was another story about pimples lord....
Totally recommend this book!
This is an incredible collection of short stories. I have never read anything from this author so I had no idea what to expect. This book went above my expectations. Some stories gross and absurd at times, they were so good.
Thank you NetGalley and Harper Perennial for giving me the opportunity to read this short story collection early in exchange for an honest review.
I was a little scared going into this due to some of the recent mixed reviews. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading it - I say this as someone who generally does not like reading short story collections.
Like with any short story collection, there were some that hit harder than others. The first story is a banger, and I really loved a few others as well. There were a couple that I wanted more from and would absolutely read a full novel/novella on. Of course, this means there were a couple that I didn’t enjoy very much, and I even skipped through one because the language was a bit too scientific for my liking. However, I do think these stories show the impressive amount of range that Clark possesses. I wasn’t expecting the amount of science fiction that would be in these stories, and I do not typically read much science fiction, but I never found myself not wanting to pick the book back up.
I think this would be a great read for people who do enjoy horror/sci-fi short stories or for pre existing Eliza Clark fans. If you haven’t read anything by her in the past, I would definitely start with one of her actual novels. But She’s Always Hungry is a casual, slightly gross little collection that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Nothing super scary or horrific- but it’s certainly campy, and I had a lot of fun with it.
This book defiantly brought the wow factor in my eyes. Clark's writing was absolutely exquisite and kept me on my toes until the very last page. Each story was beautifully brought to life and anyone in the need of horror short stories should run to this book. 4.5 stars
Oh goodness this one was INTERESTING i really liked Boy Parts and this one was unique. Some, like Goth GF, were relatively straightforward, and honestly the weak point of this collection. But when she dived all in on the darker or spec, all that, works like "Extinction Event", "The King", "She's Always Hungry"... they're delicious. 4.5 stars. Tysm for the arc
As with any collection of stories, there are some that I like more than others. Overall, I enjoyed this collection but the stories that I didn't like, I really didn't like. What I do really like is Clark's twisted, satirical mind and with that the scenarios and worlds that she is able to create and the distinct writing that she puts on the page. She's Always Hungry is an unhinged, laugh-out-loud joyride.
thanks to netgalley & harper perrenial for the free earc in exchange for a fair and honest review!
i've had mixed opinions on eliza clark's works, despite my immense respect for her - i found Boy Parts to not be for me, but loved Penance a lot. so, i was really excited when i began this short story collection and found myself repeatedly getting sucked in to the stories.
eliza clark is really good at creating stories with extremely flawed and realistic characters in fantastical yet sickeningly possible scenarios. i found this collection to really showcase the author's cynicism regarding climate and political issues, as well as her acknowledgement of the rabbit hole many people who experience eating disorders fall into.
each story brings something new to the table, and leaves you wondering about the future of the characters long after the story ends. the stories are so short that i honestly can't believe how attached i became to so many of the characters. i read the first few stories weeks ago, and still find myself thinking about them almost daily.
read this if you enjoy: social commentary with a horror/fantasy twist, any of eliza clark's other works, or detailed insights into the minds of people in extremely specific situations.
Probably the quickest I’ve read a short story collection. Probably one of my favorite short story collections. I finished the first story, thought ‘hell yeah’, and knew this was gonna be a good time.
I think Eliza Clark’s writing and creativity is very well suited to short story telling, and I hope she releases more.
This was a genre-defying collection of stories that focus on the things that consume us physically (parasites, creatures, bacteria) and mentally or emotionally (obsession, desire, lust, greed, revenge). I was fully obsessed with every story in this collection. I would categorize this as strange literary fiction with dark humor and horror elements. I would read a full length novel or novella based on several of these stories/concepts.
I was so entertained by the variety of genres here. There were sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and literary stories, but despite being so different in genre, they all had the unifying theme of the things that we are consumed by. This made for such a dynamic but cohesive reading experience.
My personal favorite stories were She's Always Hungry, Hollow Bones, Goth GF, Extinction Event, The King, and Company Man. I admittedly didn't like The Shadow Over Little Chitaly at first, but it has grown on me. I have not read anything else by Eliza Clark, so I cannot compare it to her previous work.
I would recommend this for fans of dark humor, strange or weird stories, fans of Kate Folk's short story collection Out There. I could see the sci-fi novella readers who read from authors like Becky Chambers and Nnedi Okorafor also enjoying some of these stories.
TW: disordered eating, allusions to grooming, mentioning of SA, body horror, death
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
THANK YOU Netgalley and Harper Perennial for this ARC I am eternally grateful.
She did it again folks. WOW. By far the best short story collection I’ve ever read. I will say, I am a very big Eliza Clark fan so this is not really a surprise. If you do not like Eliza’s previous work, you will probably not like this. But godDAMN I have never laughed so hard at any work of fiction in my life. Something about Eliza Clark’s writing just captures how insane our supposedly mundane but simultaneously catastrophic little lives are. She has a way of making you immediately feel so unnerved by every sentence and every character.
And now here are my individual ratings for each story:
Build a Body Like Mine: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Problem Solver: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
She’s Always Hungry: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
The Shadow Over Little Chitaly: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- hands down my favorite one. This defines my humor.
Hollow Bones: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Goth GF: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Extinction Event: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Nightstalkers: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Shake Well: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
The King: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Company Man: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

@ has been an auto-buy, auto-read, auto-obsessed author of mine since reading Boy Parts last year. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read her new collection of short stories early! Thanks so much @ and @
SHE'S ALWAYS HUNGRY is a wild collection of stories that span multiple genres and themes, most of which include elements womanhood in one way or another.

I only let this one marinate in my Kindle for as long as I did because some reviews mentioned that there was too much body horror. Not the case in my opinion. There is some, but not enough to turn me away from the underlying narrative of the story.
Eliza is such a force of nature in the modern day literary world and her ability to bend the rules of genre fiction is outstanding.
Always a pleasure to read her work!
I was beyond excited for She’s Always Hungry — Eliza Clark’s debut, Boy Parts, is one of my all time favorite novels. While this short story collection doesn’t pack quite as powerful a punch as Boy Parts or Penance, it’s still an excellent collection and well worth the read.
She’s Always Hungry’s 11 stories largely tackle the themes of gender, bodies, and sexuality. One particular highlight, The Problem Solver, follows a woman as a male friend ‘helps’ her process her rape. Another standout, Hollow Bones, finds its protagonist in an alien hospital with a strangely compelling, otherworldly wound. While the stories never quite amounted to more than the sum of their parts, they were tremendously enjoyable nonetheless. 4*.
As an aside, the book’s comprehensive content guide truly sets a gold standard I hope other collections follow.
Thank you to Harper Perennial and NetGalley for providing this e-arc.
Eliza Clark is such a talented writer I adore her writing and this was an excellent addition to her work. The writing is gripping and I loved following these characters to see what was going to happen. I love Clark's writing and how she is able to catch my attention and never stop until it ends. It was an amazing read.
I really loved 3-4 of these stories but didn’t connect with the rest. There’s some great body horror and I enjoyed the range of themes, some of the speculative stuff just lost me a bit.
