Fabian is billed as science fiction & fantasy but the story definitely edges into horror. Ace and his sister are sucked into the computer, and Fabian, the avatar Ace created, tries to destroy them using the magic tricks that he – and Ace – love. It’s a fun concept. Ace and Nora must work together for the first time in ages to try and save their skins. There are some interesting ideas, and the relationship between the two siblings is realistic. It seems harsh that Ace has to wait so long for his turn on the computer to read his dad’s emails, given that his father is travelling overseas (and emailing him daily), which forces him into sneaking onto his mother’s computer where the rogue software lies waiting. I was a little disappointed with the resolution and the explanation, but overall it's an easy read for younger readers to enjoy (especially if they like magicians or computers).

Thank you so much to West 44 Books/ Rosen Publishing and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.

Ace misses his dad who’s away at work, so he sneaks on the shared computer to check for emails from him when it’s not his turn. He gets grounded and not allowed to use the shared computer at all. So he sneaks to his mom’s computer and creates Fabian a magician who turns out to be a virus that sucks him and his sister into the computer.

This was a very unique concept with Ace creating this character on the computer who comes alive and is incredibly manipulative, doesn’t want to be erased at all. Then he sucks them into the computer giving them a scary but fun adventure within it and trying reset the system and out smart him before it’s too late.

I must admit I don’t know anything about computers or tech myself so some of the terminology was a bit lost on me as I didn’t always know what they were on about, though the characters did so that’s what really mattered.

It was a fun unique adventure and I liked that Ace eventually learnt to respect his sister a little bit more and learnt more about himself in the process, what he could do and to have some of his confidence in his magical skills.

I think if you like trick magic, you’ll love this as it’s full of different magic tricks throughout, also if you like computers you’ll love this as the two characters become one with it and have to solve the way out from the inside.
