This was a quirky read. We have a 109 year old with the entire history (and secrets) of the town wrapped up in her head. We have a nosey journalist with his own agenda, wanting to find out all the hidden details of his own ancestry amongst other things. We also have buried treasure and secrets.
This story is set in plantation and slave time Southern part of America. Very little is documented but stories passed from one generation to the next. How correct the stories are is anybody’s guess and did they get a wee bit mixed up in the retelling? Probably.
Its a rambling tale, can get a bit confusing but portrays realistically what plantation life really was, before moving onto present times. The events took place in 1895, we then come to the 1970s and then to present day times. A lot to cover.
I loved the idea and the setting of this, but it switched around too much for me to get into it properly. It was kind of confusing, even though this wasn't a very long book. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
This promised much, but sadly, for me, didn't deliver. The book was narrated by multiple characters from different eras, who I found it difficult to keep tabs on. The plot was elusive. A pity - perhaps this would have been better as a longer novel.
This was a somewhat interesting family drama but honestly it needed to be longer. I felt there was too much going on for such a short book.
This book grabbed my attention when it mentioned small town Marshall, Texas because I don’t live far from there.
It was an interesting short mystery told mostly my the towns historian. There was a lot of family drama but it was almost to much in such a short book. I personally struggled with keeping up with all the names and blood lines. If you like a good family drama and a shorter book grabbed this one. It was just a struggle for me personally!!
