Mandy is struggling to make ends meet as a single mother to her son Ollie. Her husband is out of the picture, and she is just too proud to ask for help. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so she decides to rent out a room and quickly gets a taker Rob. This with Rob are going well until they aren't, and you immediately are left wondering, who exactly is Rob?

This story was predictable and lacked depth. I hated Robs character and really had a hard time finding myself rooting for anyone.
Did not love this, would not likely recommend.

This book had me hooked from start to finish! Mandy Jennings’ fight to keep her home and her decision to rent out her spare room quickly leads to unexpected trouble. The new lodger brings with them more than just financial relief, and the mix of Mandy’s chaotic life—her troublesome teenage son, a demanding love interest, and a persistent ex—creates a perfect storm of suspense.

The tension builds as the lodger’s true nature begins to reveal itself, and the challenges Mandy faces made me feel every bit of her stress and anxiety. The way the story unfolds, with twists and turns, kept me guessing about what would happen next. It’s a gripping read about the risks we take in desperate times and the unexpected dangers that can come with them.

I Let You In J.E. Steeples was such a crazy and creepy story.
I was very intrigued and Steeples really kept me hooked from the very beginning.
I really enjoyed the writing style. I found myself gripped, turning the pages, not knowing what was to come next.
It was suspenseful, mysterious and unpredictable.

This was decent read, but I probably wouldn’t recommend it as a worthwhile thriller.

Mandy and her teenage son, Ollie, live alone after her ex, Frank, decided to start a new family. Too proud to accept financial help from her ex, she decides to take her friend Cally’s advice and bring in a lodger to make ends meet. Little did she realize that bringing in a stranger would cause so much unease and literally upend her entire life.

I don’t know if it was just me, but I couldn’t believe how often they were “turning on the kettle” for tea, coffee, etc. It was very repetitive. I also got a little bored in the middle of the book, waiting for something exciting to happen.

The climactic ending that I had been waiting for left me unsatisfied. There wasn’t enough description or depth to it. It just abruptly stopped. I was like “what, that’s it?!”

Overall, this was a decent read and I wanted to keep going so that I could see how it ended. It was unfortunately pragmatic in the fact that a female who rents her spare room to a male inevitably has to fear for her own safety, in today’s world. You have to be smarter. I feel that it needed more character development as I didn’t feel any sort of attachment to any of the characters to care enough about what happened to them.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC for an honest review.

A single mother struggling to pay the bills takes in a lodger to help cover costs. The story has some creepy men who made my skin crawl. It's a compelling read and even when I was terrified it was still hard to put down. The ending is entirely shocking out of this world!

ARC Review-- 3 ⭐

Publication Date: August 29, 2024

Single mother Mandy is having a hard time making ends meet on her part-time salary for her and her son Ollie. Despite her better judgement, she decides to take on a roommate. The perfect roommate she thinks she found has a different plan and creates chaos in the everyday happenings of Mandy's life.

I really wanted to like to book, and I tried. I just couldn't get past how far fetched some of the things the main character thought or did were. Also--they drink a TON in this book--either coffee or wine. Every scene, every chapter mentions the characters having a drink or "cuppa" and I just don't feel it was necessary to mention all of the time. It was a bit repetitive. As for the far-fetched ideas--some of the things Mandy believes--like when presented with facts from her trusted friends she simply dismisses them and goes against what they're saying. I feel like it wasn't real life. That's simply not how a conversation would go. She was presented with an opposing thought and she dismissed it and the other person simply dropped the idea, I'm sorry---What?!

All in all the book managed to keep me entertained. It was on the shorter side, so a quick read as well. I feel there could have been more context to the book--like I mentioned above, more back and forth when an opposing idea was presented instead of quickly dropping the notion. I also feel like some of the characters lacked the needed depth for the story. There were too one dimensional for my liking--Freya and Jack specifically. I feel that more substance to them would have done wonders for the overall story and appeal of them.

Mandy lives alone with her son Ollie. With her husband out of the picture, she was struggling to survive so she decides to rent out a room. As if things aren’t hard enough for Mandy, her ex, Frank comes back into her life which makes their son very happy. Things are going well with Rob who is renting the room. Is Rob really who he says he is? Who did Mandy let into her house? Rob is the biggest creep, I didn’t like him. The ending was wild. Thank you NetGalley, J.E. Steeples and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the ARC!
