A clear-eyed, sobering view of getting older. Dealing with chronic illness and then being told by doctors you present at your age (not younger) is a hard reality. Our internal images of ourselves are sometimes in conflict with the realities of what happens to our bodies as we age. I loved her personal musings and reflections on this stage in life and her embracing retirement and then a new adventure as a yoga instructor! Here's to embracing new experiences as we get older! Even though I am about 15 years younger than the author, this book still resonated with me very much.

Thank you to Netgalley and University of Minnesota Press for an ARC and I voluntarily left this review.

The author wrote a truly thought provoking book about aging. Since I am feeling a bit anxious about the clear calendar in front of me as I begin to think about my own retirement, I appreciated her pointing out that for some it's a chance to pursue the things you never had time for--even a new career doing something you love. The author took this opportunity to becoming a yoga instructor. The idea of of doing something part time that brings a sense of delight instead of the day-to-day responsibilities of working every day is something worth thinking about. She also points out how nice it is to not drive in bad weather or be ruled by a clock.

On the other hand, there are the troubling things that are a part of growing older. She doesn't hesitate to talk about poor health and what it is like to go on alone when a spouse has passed away.

This is a book that was worth reading. 5 stars!

A compelling look at old age, its gifts and challenges, from a long-widowed author who writes with poetic authenticity. Inspiring!
