OMG THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THESE TWO! It was soooo good! I’ve read all of Anna’s books and I think this is one of my favorites. It’s sexy, witty and addictive, but at the same time is full of aghast, emotional boundaries and secrets. The chemistry is off the chart, and Devlin devastatingly handsome. I fell in love with him right from the beginning. Peyton is so strong and resilient! I wanted to hug her and fight by her side! So beautiful!
There’s suspense, a bit of action, lots of romance and steamy times. I couldn’t stop reading. I highly recommend this book.

The Duke and the Darkness is the first book in Anna Harrington's new series The Dukes of Darkness so if you're looking to start a new series, consider grabbing this one.

Devlin Raines, Duke of Dartmoor, has worked to put his father's sins in the past. His goal now is to keep his mother and sister safe and make a good marriage but when out of nowhere a mysterious (and beautiful) woman disrupts everything, he knows he has more work to do.

Peyton Chandler is our fmc and to the world, she has been dead for ten years. When she and her parents were attacked in their carriage, she faked her own death and left the country but now she's returned to London for revenge against the man she believes was responsible for it all - Devlin Raines. Peyton knows he was there that night and she is going to make him pay. Unfortunately, the more time she spends with him, the more what Peyton thought starts to fall apart and eventually the man she set out to destroy becomes the only man she can trust.

This book is heavy on the mystery aspect as Peyton and Devlin work to uncover what truly happened the evening of the attack and who was behind it as well as who is behind what has been recently occurring. Don't get me wrong - the romance is there, it just wasn't always front and center. I am also glad that Peyton was able to see who Devin truly is, not just because of how he was treated by his father, but because of what he does for those he loves and how he treats everyone around him...that he wasn't the spoiled womanizer she thought he was when they were younger.

Overall, I enjoyed this first book and I'll definitely be picking up the next book in the series when I can because with all the descriptions around Devlin's friends/counterparts, I'm intrigued to learn more about them.

This was definitely different! Not heavily on the romance but a lot of suspense and tension. I liked it! I did feel like there were a lot of names going on in the book without a storyline but maybe that's because sometimes I still struggle with English and can't always keep up. I loved how fearce Peyton is and the gentle side of Devlin and the bond with his family. I didn't see it coming who really attacked Peyton and her parents, the story was very well written!
I am looking forward to the second book, Crewes story sounds intriguing!

WOW! Just WOW!

I had to take a few moments to collect my thoughts about this novel, as I was bowled over by both the story and the writing, before I could leave my review. So without much more ado:

I really enjoyed this novel, the first I have read by Anna Harrington and the first in her new series with Dragonblade, The Dukes of Darkness. Already I am looking forward to Lucien's story as well as Chase's and Seamus's. All of these dukes seem to have been scarred by various events in their pasts or mistreatment by their morally bankrupt fathers. I, for one, am here for the rest of the series as all four men will be tasked with bringing their darkness into the light while winning over their heroines.

In terms of this first novel, it centers around a horrific crime that occurred ten years in the past, when Peyton Chandler witnessed the brutal murders of her parents at the hands of thugs she believes were ordered to carry out the crimes by Devlin Raines, the heir to the dukedom of Dartmoor. After being almost left for dead, she goes into hiding in France and plans to return to wreak havoc and revenge on Devlin, taking everything from him, as she believes he once took everything she held dear from her. But after returning to London and spending time with Devlin, she begins to doubt what she has been told about who is responsible for her parents' deaths, and she has difficulty reconciling who she thought Devlin Raines was and who he truly is beneath the handsome, suave surface he shows the world.

Make no mistake, there are dark themes in this novel, including spousal and child abuse in the past as well as what happened to Peyton that night, but it is so well-written that I became very invested in how Peyton and Devlin would move past their own painful histories to embrace a shared future with trust, love and happiness. Their love story is also steamy, and Anna Harrington writes some of the most tender intimate scenes in this book I've ever read. I liked both MC's, particularly Devlin and what he was wiling to do to atone for his father's sins. Both characters were nuanced and well-drawn, and I was rooting for them to work through their past pain together and recognize their love for each other. I also liked how well-drawn the secondary characters of Devlin's mother and sisters, and Lucien Grenier, Devlin's closest boyhood friend, were. I did figure out who the villain was early on, but not the twist or the why of it, and at the end, when I knew for certain that Peyton was facing her worst nightmare (again), I was a bit spooked by the darkness that had lurked beneath the surface since that dreadful night and wondered whether Devlin was going to have a key role in protecting her - or would she end up saving herself?

All in all, a really good read that I enjoyed immensely, and I am ready to find out why Lucien Grenier, Duke of Crewe, got his face slapped and by whom in the epilogue, in the next book of the series.

Whew, that was dark. It's right there in the title, "The Duke and the Darkness," but maybe I didn't actually believe it would be that dark? Anna Harrington is an excellent author and I love all her books that I've read. This book also has excellent writing. I guess I just wasn't prepared for it to be such a heavy read. I need to immediately go and read any of her other books for a palate cleanser lol.

I thought that this was a great read, and I am eager to continue this new series. This book grabbed my attention very quickly and kept it handily. Devlin and Peyton are complex characters that were likable, and they had me deeply invested and passionately rooting them on. The story itself is well written and offers up a captivating combination of drama, mystery, emotion, intensity, action, spice, and twists that read smoothly yet packed a powerful punch.

Wow, riveting! This was a dramatic and extremely intense love story. It told of betrayals, abuse, lies, death, murder, attempted murders, plot of revenge, such excitement, action, suspense, mystery, and so much more that kept me enthralled and sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. The characters were complex and strong-willed. I really enjoyed the romance with delicious passion that began despite everything turned into true love. I highly recommend reading!

Is she the darkness?

Devlin had a shady father and he never atoned for those sins. Those sins come back to haunt him in the form of a vengeful Peyton. She was almost killed, along with her family ten years ago and had to fake her own death. Yes, she is easily led astray on her path for revenge.

INJECT IT INTO MY VEINS. Anna Harrington is quickly becoming an auto-buy author for me. Her prose is exquisite, her characters are divine, and the book totally delivers on the promise of that stunning cover!

I am a fan of Anna Harrington's previous novels, so I went into this with high expectations. Perhaps that was why I was initially a little (tiny bit) disappointed with this book. Luckily, I kept an open mind because there was a lot to like in this book. I liked that Peyton wasn't too stubborn to recognize when the facts weren't lining up the way she was sure they would. Her ability to see the error of her ways was ultimately what allowed her to finally solve the mystery surrounding the death of her parents. I also liked that Devlin was more interested in helping Peyton than seeking revenge for her attempts to destroy his reputation. What I was disappointed with here was how obvious it was that Peyton was being led astray by the very people she had put so much trust in. Their stories about that fateful night when Peyton's parents were killed were just way too convenient and the pressure they put on her when she started to question what had really happened was too strange to be ignored. I can understand why Peyton was so easily fooled - they protected her after a traumatic event and prior to that she had no reason to suspect they weren't who they appeared to be. And since Devlin didn't interact with them he wouldn't have picked up on anything strange. It was really only as a reader that you knew where this story would eventually end up - it also made the big reveal not much of a surprise at all. As I said previously, this was not enough to make me dislike the rest of the story and I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

A GHOST FROM THE PAST

This is the first book I've read by this author, and it certainly won't be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written and fast-paced enemies-to-lovers romance that is full of twists, pent-up emotions, mystery, action, danger, intrigue, suspense and sensuality. It captivated me from the very beginning. The characters are endearing and complex. Devlin is plagued with anger and guilt, Peyton is full of fear, hatred and a desire for revenge. I loved their dynamic and the sizzling hot chemistry between them and how their relationship developed.
I can't wait for Crewe's story!

Both Devlin and Peyton are two strong minded characters, determined to do be independent, but finding in each other, a way to have a positive future.

The Duke and the Darkness is everything that I hope to get in an Anna Harrington book: Male main characters who are broken but are trying to not repeat the past. Female characters who are kick ass fighters and don't back down. The best supporting characters who bring context, some humor, and drop everything supportive friendships, and that you just know are getting their own happily ever after. Great sexy times on the page. And always some suspense and probably an explosion or two along the way. This one has it all! Devlin and Peyton have great chemistry immediately. And then we get to see them fall in love, while they fight the dark from each of their pasts that is horribly entwined but they both must be released from in order to move forward. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a quick read because I could not put it down.

Content warnings for this one: abusive parent, death of parents in violent manner, attempted sexual assault in the past, PTSD. As a post-Napoleon regency, in the world building and backstories, there are also references to war, poverty, mistreatment of children.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading about the other characters in future books. Devlin and Peyton were interesting characters with a dark past. I liked reading about their attraction and the battle of learning to love and trust each other.

This is not just your charming romance, although there is plenty of that as the chemistry between Devlin and Peyton sizzled off the pages! However, there is so much more to this storyline! As Peyton returns, after being presumed dead for ten years, she now is out with a vengeance to seek revenge for her parents deaths and nearly her own. Starting with Devlin, the Duke of Dartmoor, whom she believes responsible, she will do all she can to destroy his life. But what happens when she finds that he didn’t do it, and someone might still be after her? There is mystery and intrigue along with great dialogue and sparring between Devlin and Peyton . A most enjoyable read!

Devlin Raines has not always lived a life he could be proud of, but he is doing his best to be a better man and to undo at least some of the harm his father did. Peyton Chandler was in the carriage when her parents were murdered. She was attacked and pretended to be dead to survive. She believes Devlin was part of the attack on her family and has returned to life and London to make him pay. As the plot progresses and she spends time with him and things change. It seems that much of what Peyton has believed may not be true, and her trust misplaced. This is a great beginning for a new series. It is dark, intense, and emotional. There are misunderstandings, lies, secrets, and betrayal. There is also revelation, forgiveness, and a growing romance. The characters have depth and are engaging. I liked the changes in Peyton as the story unfolds, and the relationship between her and Devlin. An interesting start to what promises to be an exciting series.

Anna Harrington never disappoints. Her historical romances are usually filled with wonderful characters, detailed fashion, historical facts and locations, edge of your seat suspense and of course romance.
Devlin Raines, Duke of Dartmoor has been working tirelessly at righting his father's wrongs and leaving his past life as a mercenary behind, all the while protecting his mother and sisters until someone from the past returns and flings all of his good work into a complete tailspin.
Peyton Chandler is back from the dead to get revenge for the death of her parents and the attack on her ten years ago, but everything she thought she knew about that night was wrong. Now she must rely on Devlin to not only help her find out who was really behind the attack, but also to keep her safe.
I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more books in this series in the future.

The Duke and the Darkness by Anna Harrington is by an author new to me and it will not be the last of hers I read. The plot was dark, complicated, and enthralling. The two lead characters Devlin Rains, Duke of Dartmoor, and Miss Peyton Chandler, we were compelling and evenly matched. The romance was as intriguing as the mystery. It’s a hit, for sure. Turns out Devlin’s father was a master criminal and an abuser. He stopped abusing Devlin when he was big enough to fight back, but he damaged his daughter’s hearing by hitting her so hard. Devlin had finally had enough when he overheard a conversation between the old duke and his two partners. They were planning to ambush the third partner, Peyton’s father, and “encourage” to keep quiet. Devlin left immediately to stop the tragedy from happening but by the time he arrived, the parents were dead and Peyton was on the verge of being raped. He stopped it and carried her to her home. He heard the next day that she had died in the night. He and his friend, Lucien, the third member of the evil triumvirate, determined that this had to end and the people harmed had to be recompensed, which turned out to not always be possible.

This was a well-written book, plotted tightly with excellent characters. Devlin has friends and they will, no doubt, feature prominently in the next books in the series. Can’t wait! Devlin has cultivated a reputation as a rake, as has his friend, Lucien. Neither of them really were. Devlin’s two sisters are an important part of the story as he is decidedly overprotective. The over protectiveness causes some humorous moments in the story. Peyton has been gutted twice and her energy is flagging. She just wants to get back to her life in France, but first she must catch the violent member of the team and put things as right as she is able. This is a terrific story. Thanks, Anna Harrington, for writing a book that is a little different.

In historical romance we are used to a little scandal. This one has much more than it's share. The sins of the fathers are responsible for an awful lot of heartache for our characters. There is deadly danger to avoid and revenge to be had. Secrets have a way of surfacing when you think they are dead and buried. Our hero has many secrets, some more dangerous than others. Our heroine needs to uncover the past to hope for a future.
This is a very exciting and steamy story. It's the first in a new series and I can't wait to read the next one.
