I adore Eddie Flynn, but this book wasn't as strong as some of the others in the series. I LOVED the last one (The Accomplice) but strongly disliked the one before that. What I've always liked about this series is how Eddie's street smarts and former life as a conman informs what kind of lawyer he is. So many of the books have these wildly delicious courtroom scenes and cleverness.
This book is very good but maybe just not as dazzling as some. In some ways it could have been any old legal thriller and not an Eddie Fly book. There are also so many points of view that you lose a little of Eddie's POV.
But, having said that, I still enjoyed it very much and would recommend.
Amazing book. Loved every minute of it. I was drawn in with the first chapter and could not stop reading it. Will definitely be recommending this book to everyone I know.
Witness 8 by Steve Cavanagh is a thrilling legal drama that blends suspense with sharp social commentary. The story centers on Ruby, a former member of Manhattan’s elite who now works as a maid in the very homes she used to inhabit. From her vantage point, she witnesses the secrets and scandals of the upper class, but her life takes a dangerous turn when she witnesses a murder and decides to play her cards close to her chest.
Enter Eddie Flynn, a streetwise ex-con-artist-turned-defense attorney known for taking on the toughest and most hopeless cases. He becomes embroiled in the case of John Jackson, a man wrongfully accused of murder with all the evidence stacked against him. Cavanagh expertly constructs a narrative filled with tension as Eddie and his unconventional team scramble to uncover the truth and protect an innocent man while facing threats from ruthless organized crime figures.
The character dynamics are captivating, particularly the tension between Ruby’s dark intentions and Eddie’s desperate fight for justice. Cavanagh’s writing is fast-paced and filled with witty dialogue, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as the plot twists and turns.
Witness 8 is a compelling exploration of class disparity, morality, and the lengths one will go to for justice. With its clever plot and richly drawn characters, this book is a must-read for fans of legal thrillers and crime fiction. Cavanagh’s ability to blend humor with high stakes makes this novel a standout in the genre, and readers will find themselves racing to the end.
Kill for Me, Kill for You is 1 of my few 5 star reads this year. Afterwards, I read Thirteen which was another 5 star read for me. So I was extremely excited to learn Steve Cavanaugh has another book coming out & I was able to recead an ARC of it. I will start by saying that I read Witness 8 while battling a cold. So while I did enjoy it. I didn't find it as incredible the other 2 books. I didn't love the first 2 chapters and initially didn't feel they had anything to do with the main plot. As I continued reading, I understand the connection. Initially I hated Mr Christmas but he grew on me. I also didn't love the hit put out for Eddie Flynn. But hey, that does drive home that he was originally conman Fly turned good attorney. I needed to figure out Ruby's vendetta against the Jacksons. I live in NYC and appreciate how Cavanaugh writes about the big apple. NY is almost a character in his books! I do recommend this book for Steve Cavanaugh & Eddie Flynn fans. But read Thirteen first. I still need to go back and read the earlier Eddie Flynn books. I rate this a 4 out of 5.
I truly enjoy the Eddie Flynn series and the newest novel, Witness 8, is no exception. The red herrings were intricately placed and kept me second guessing myself just when I thought I had figured everything out. I love how Steve Cavanagh’s writing style keeps me intrigued and wanting more up until the very end. The trial was by far the most riveting part of this installment. If you love a good legal thriller that keeps you on your toes then this is the book for you.
I love the Eddie Flynn series. Starting with The Devil’s Advocate, I unfortunately haven’t enjoyed them as much as the ones before that, but they are still really great and I can say that this has been one of my favorite series.
Witness 8 is the 8th installment of the series. However, you don’t have to read them in order. Cavanagh does a good job explaining who everyone is and what’s going on if it links to a previous book very well, so you still know what’s going on. I do recommend starting at the beginning just to get the full experience of the characters' stories and growth.
I feel like Witness 8 had a lot going on. I almost felt like there were two or three different plots going on at once and it was a little hard to keep track of at times. And most of all, I missed Eddie. I feel like the last few books haven’t had as much of Eddie in them, and there wasn’t as much time in court. One of the things I loved most about these books was watching Eddie always one-up people in the courtroom. His style is so fun and I really enjoyed the ‘gotcha’ moments. I liked seeing Kate in action as well, but I just wish there had been a lot more courtroom scenes and less of the other characters.
Here, I’ll try to give my opinion without giving away too many of the past books, but the introduction of Bloch has been a little bit of a letdown to me, considering who she replaced. You’ll understand what I’m talking about if you have read the past books. It seemed like a very unnecessary replacement, and I don’t understand his choice to do this. I have a tough time connecting with her character and really miss the person she replaced. I thought by now in the series, I’d feel differently, but maybe in the next book.
I have enjoyed Gabriel Lake, and of course, I love Harry. They are a great team and family.
Overall, I give it a 4.5/5. I love the Eddie Flynn series, even if the last few books have had some things that bug me a tiny bit…I’ll keep reading them as long as Cavanagh keeps writing them. They’re a great, great legal thriller series. One of the best, I think. You just have to love Eddie.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this ARC!
This book definitely made me keep reading, it was hard to put down! The main characters were complex, and kept me guessing what they were going to do. I like how everything came together at the end.
This is such a great book! The universe it is based in is so good! I wish I was there, I felt like it was. The story is fast paced, full of so many twists and turns, and the overall writing is so good!! I loved everything about this book, really love this authors writing!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, and especially the author for this ARC in exchange for my honest review of the book!!
Kickbacks and Greenbacks-That is what New York runs on…
Fortunately, for Eddie Flynn-lawyer and former Con Artist, he knows exactly what to do with that fact, as he deals with a crooked cop, and an Assassin called “Mr. Christmas” hired to take him out.
We also have Ruby Johnson-a nanny and maid to many of the wealthy families on West 74th Street, in Manhattan. But “once upon a time” she used to be “one of them”. They may have forgotten this-but she definitely hasn’t!
She knows their secrets-like who is cheating on who. And, late one night, while on her way home from a job, Ruby witnesses one lover kill another.
She knows the victim-AND she knows the killer.
So, she will make an anonymous call to the police naming the murderer.
But the DESPICABLE Ruby Johnson didn't tell the truth...
Because Ruby has her own agenda.
The latest in the Eddie Flynn legal thriller series opens with Eddie in court doing what Eddie does best-pulling a Con to get a client off. But this time, he has pulled the con on the wrong person-a crooked cop, and he will spend his time trying to stay one step ahead of the trouble that causes, while his associate, Kate, defends the innocent man, Ruby has framed for Murder.
Harry is back as a sounding board, and Bloch and Lake provide the muscle as the team tries to figure out WHO has framed their client, renowned surgeon John Jackson, and WHY.
I always look forward to a reunion with Eddie Flynn and his associates, but I have to admit that I did miss having Eddie in court, as Kate is more of a straight shooter and not quite as much fun-But Ruby and Christmas were GREAT new characters!
I do recommend that you read the series in order so you can meet the characters who become part of his ever growing team, but note, that the first may seem a bit cliche but Cavanagh’s writing has really grown since his debut!
U.S. publication date is: March 11, 2025
Thank You to Atria Books for the gifted ARC provided through NetGalley. As always, these are my candid thoughts!
Thank you for letting me to read this book in advance. I really appreciate it.
I love the concept; however, the narrative feels forced and to me, it feels like we're trying very hard to set the scenes, which makes the story not very believable. I understand that this is a fiction, but if the story is not believable, it's challenging to keep reading. All things considered, I'd give this book 3 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the Arc of this fast moving book. Ruby used to live on West 74th Street now she is a maid and nanny to those that live there. After witnessing a murder, Ruby sees it as an opportunity Eddie Flynn and his employees set out to unveil the truth
The characters were well developed, the story development was fast paced, everything that I love in a book
Eddie Flynn is a character in an ongoing series
Witness 8 was my first Steve Cavanaugh book, and now I'm hooked. I realized halfway through that it is a series, and now I want to go back and devour them all. The twists left me reading long into the night! I just had to know what was going to happen next. The characters were so well written. I felt like I was living in upscale NYC and watching this unfold in front of my very own eyes. It was just that good!
Another full-on fast moving drama involving former conman now criminal lawyer, Eddie Flynn and his usual crew. Central character in this book is Ruby Johnson who works as a nanny for a family on West 74th Street in upscale Manhattan. Ruby is witness to a murder on West 74th Street and then makes an anonymous call to the police and blames an innocent man, John Jackson, a well established surgeon and also her employer. John is setup for the murder and is referred by his lawyer to criminal lawyer, Eddie Flynn for help. Eddie and crew are tasked with clearing an innocent man and finding out who actually did the crime. There’s a great mixture of drama in the courtroom and a lot of action as well. Very well written book. I really enjoyed it and found myself rooting for the characters. Looking forward to the next Eddie Flynn book.
This one gets a solid 2.5 stars from me, which was a little disappointing because I absolutely adored Kill for Me, Kill for You. The writing style was totally different from what I read here. I will say going into it that I did not know it was part of a series, so I think my rating should come with an asterisk, as I may have felt differently about some aspects of this book had I known that or had I read the previous related books. But now onto the salient points.
I expected this to be a lightning fast legal thriller. The pace was less of a maelstrom and more of a garden variety thunderstorm. I found myself forcing myself to keep going in parts, which is never where I want to be with the book I’m reading.
There were WAY too many characters for my brain to be able to track. Part of this could be due to jumping into a series without any context, but it was just so difficult to keep everyone separate in my head and to distinguish them from one another. I will say that the author did a good job of explaining characters’ back stories in a way that likely summarized what had happened in previous books, though I can’t confirm that.
Ruby’s storyline was by far the most compelling. What started out as hints at a supernatural element quickly turned into something else entirely. Her motive and her ending were not things I expected to see from her character!
The best part, of course, was the courtroom scenes. I don’t practice criminal law, but there was enough there to satisfy my lawyer brain. Of course certain liberties have to be taken for the sake of the drama, but it was definitely the most engaging part of the book.
Read this if you are looking for a John Grisham/Harlan Cohen mashup. Maybe add an extra star to my rating if you have read any of the Eddie Flynn series before.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Slow burn at first but overall kept my interest! Great book! Loved the setting in an affluent neighborhood where “nothing can happen here”.. Highly recommend!!
What an interesting twist on a thriller that definitely kept me guessing. Thank you Netgalley and Atria books.
A very intriguing and suspenseful read. Wasn’t aware it was a series so did feel a bit lost (my fault). Overall a great mystery and thriller!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for his ARC. I was a tad confused with all the characters, but the suspense is definitely there and made for a good read. I do wish I had ready more in the series before starting this one.
I enjoyed this thriller. There were several points of view and I always like that in a book. The characters were quite interesting.- ex con man attorney especially. There were some twists and surprises that I wasn’t expecting. I’d read more works by this author and based on the ending, I’d be interested in a sequel as well.
Wellll.... I did not at all realize that this was the next installment in a series - I wish that had been made more clear in the description. This author's 2023 release was in my top ten of the year, and I'm sure this one is fantastic for anyone who has been following along up to date on this series.
