An ex-con turned defense attorney. An extremely polite hitman called Mr. Christmas. A devious nanny that hears a voice coming from a portrait. Dead bodies, kick butt women and quite a few likeable (and unlikeable) characters. Very well written with a nice flow. This was my first read by Steve Cavanagh and I am now a fan. Can't wait to read more.
Thanks to Net Galley and Atria Books for this ARC ebook. Although at first I was a bit overwhelmed with all of the characters, I quickly settled in and it soon all came together. I really like the unconventional ways of Eddie Flynn who used to be a conman and is now a lawyer. The twist about Ruby and the truth about her father had my jaw dropping. I highly recommend this book.
This is the third book of Steve Cavanaghs that I've read and I'm a fan.
I love Steve Cavanagh’s books, especially the Eddie Flynn series. Eddie is such an interesting character and it’s always great to see how he is going to manage to get himself or his clients out of their messes. This book especially had me sucked in from the very beginning with Ruby’s storyline. I loved how well this book was written and it’s definitely left an opening for the next in the series!
Thank you to the author, Atria Books, and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. This is my honest review. 5⭐️, publication date March 11, 2025
Ok for starters I LOVE Eddie! I love his character and how he genuinely cares for his clients. Now let’s get to the book! I loved this book. It was full of intense twist and turns that I didn’t see coming at all. I had no clue who killed Maggs! And the ending ? Ummm what was that! SHOCKING!!! I love Steve Cavanagh and will always read his books!
“Witness 8” by Steve Cavanagh is a gripping legal thriller that centers on defense attorney Eddie Flynn, a former conman turned lawyer. The story follows Flynn as he takes on the case of a well-respected doctor accused of murder. Despite the seemingly black-and-white nature of the case, Flynn uses morally gray tactics to defend his client, blurring the lines between right and wrong.
The novel’s plot is entirely unbelievable but equally enjoyable, making it a thrilling and fast-paced journey. The characters are complex, morally ambiguous, and leave readers feeling torn—often finding themselves rooting for the bad guy. This book offers a compelling exploration of the justice system and what it means to seek justice in a world where the truth isn’t always clear.
If you enjoy courtroom drama with a twist, morally complex characters, and a plot that keeps you guessing until the end, “Witness 8” is a must-read.
I gave this book 5 stars. It is hands down one of the best books I have read in 2024. You will not be able to put this one down. I was not able to guess the plot twists and I appreciate that. This is the first book I have read by this author and I will be looking for more in the future!
super thrilling and downright addicting!! i loved this from start to finish. it was such a quick read because the content itself was so addicting you couldn't put the book down. i will definitely read more from this author.
This was my first book by this author. I enjoyed the unconventional ways of Eddie Flynn- I will be checking out this series for sure!
I liked that there were a few storylines weaving everything together. I was guessing until the end.
Ruby was a disturbing character for sure!
Thank you NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC.
Steve Cavanagh does it again. I'm such a huge fan of the Eddie Flynn series and was pumped to see another novel added to this series. What felt like three stories in one, I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book. If you haven't read his books, this is your sign. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book!
Solid 5 star book, more of a mystery thriller. Found a new author to follow and csnt wait to read the rest of the books!!
I got to read this ARC from NetGalley. This story was full of suspense, classic Eddie Flynn, always getting into predicaments! The way Eddie goes about solving things is very unconventional, but it works! I had a hard time putting this one down. The twists kept me guessing. If you like a really good legal thriller, I highly recommend this one!
Witness 8 by Steve Cavanaugh is the eighth installment in the Eddie Flynn series.
Ruby Johnson is a nanny/house cleaner for the wealthy clients who live on West 45th St in New York. She barely makes ends meet trying to support herself and her mother who is dying of cancer. Yet Ruby used to be one of the wealthy families living on that street. Her dad lost all their money and ran off, leaving her and her mother to fend for themselves.
While walking home from work one night, Ruby witnesses a murder happen in one of those great homes. She sees the murderer’s face and recognizes him. This sets into motion a plan from Ruby that includes framing an innocent man, implicating others in theft and murder, and murder itself. She seems unhinged throughout the book, talking and listening to a creepy old painting. She is a pretty scary character yet maintains love and devotion to her mother.
Eddie Flynn is the lawyer who used to be a con man. He represents the wrongly accused man in this murder. But he is also an unliked man, and is dodging death throughout the book because a hit has been placed on him for wronging a mob organization. Yes, this was a very busy read! Lots and lots of moving parts.
There were aspects I really enjoyed about the read. Eddie Flynn is such a charismatic character and I love when parts of his con man persona come out. I really liked the feeling of family between Eddie and his co-workers.
I always love a legal thriller so I enjoyed the courtroom scenes and forensics details, I just wish there had been more of them. And Mr. Christmas was an interesting and humorous character that I could see making a return in future books.
Problems I had with this were that there were too many characters! I lost track of who was who often and wish it stuck to the more central characters only. As a first time Eddie Flynn reader, this was perhaps my fault, and readers familiar with the series may have had an easier time with it. I also didn’t feel the combination of the two plot lines worked well together nor were absolutely necessary. I think it could have been simpler without the addition of the hit placed on Eddie, though that would have made Mr. Christmas an unnecessary addition.
Overall, it was a fast paced read. I liken it to a Jeffrey Deaver or Harlen Coben. Though you do not have to be familiar with the series to enjoy it, it may make it easier to follow if you do.
My Rating : ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Lethal Stars
This is As If Ray Donovan & Suites had a baby !! 👀
What if the witness to a murder was more twisted than the killer ?
If you are a fan of legal thrillers then look no further and add this bad boy to your TBR ASAP !
This is my first Cavanagh book and the vibe I got was that he can write characters that are raw , complex , troubled and beguiled that you grow to love .

Ruby Johnson is a nanny in a wealthy Manhattan neighborhood and she witnesses a murder , not only does she know the victim, but she knows the murderer too !!
The question is will Ruby come forward and tell the truth to the police or …does the dark mysterious Ruby have other plans in mind and will there be more blood to shed ?
You need to read this to find out for yourself!!
This is the 8th installment in this series but I feel this can be read as a standalone!
Thank you NetGalley , Atria Books and Steve Cavanagh for this twisty Unputdownable crime thriller ARC 👏
Thank you Atria Books for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I really liked Witness 8. It felt more like a mystery than the legal thriller I was expecting. Fortunately, I enjoy mysteries and appreciate a good plot twist, both of which this book delivered. However, I was somewhat underwhelmed, although I can't quite pinpoint why. It's possible that I'm comparing it to the author's other works. I also didn't care for Ruby from the start. She didn't seem to have enough depth; she wasn't crazy or dark enough, nor did she possess any relatable characteristics. I prefer to love or hate a character, rather than feeling indifferent. Nonetheless, I loved Eddie; I appreciated his unconventional methods and his slightly skewed moral compass. I also liked his relationships and found the side characters interesting because of his individual connections with each of them. I liked that the mystery was surprising yet still realistic, and if you're a keen observer, you could figure it out on your own. Overall, I enjoyed the book, although I would recommend other works by this author first.
Legal thriller in the Eddie Flynn series
Eddie Flynn is a con man turned lawyer who manages to get himself and clients out of difficult situations with cunning and smart detective work. It’s not necessary to read the whole series in order but it does help make the characters more three dimensional knowing their backstories. I enjoy a smart thriller and Steve Cavanaugh consistently delivers. While this one is not as intricately plotted as some of his novels, it is still a very well plotted puzzle that comes together at the end. I recommend this series for those who like legal thrillers, shady and unconventional characters, and a good mystery. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy.
This was a wonderfully written dirty cop mystery with a lot of different elements and storylines. The twist at the end had my jaw hitting the floor! Definitely did not see that one coming.
This isn't the first book by Steve Cavanagh I've read, but it had been a while since I'd picked up one of his.
The premise of the unreliable witness coupled with his character of Eddy Flynn caught my interest and captured me as a reader right away. The added aspects of a dirty cop, calling a hit on Eddy, and the charming yet ruthless hit man... well, you've got a great story.
I'd recommend this to fans of mysteries that are more on the detective/crime end of the spectrum. I enjoyed it and will definitely look for the other books in the series. I don't think you have to read them in order, I wasn't lost having not read the others, but I'm sure there's probably some character building and backstory that I missed in the subtle undertones.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Perfect for fans of 'Lincoln Lawyer'! This book has several layers to it which brought different element to the story. The main character isn't really the main character. I love that change from the usual style. Ruby is a maid, cleaner, and nanny for the uber wealthy. But while she is central to the story, the main protagonist is the lawyer Eddie FLynn as he navigates mobsters and corrupt NYPD officers hell bent on killing him all the while investigating and leading a courtroom defense for the man accused of murdering a socialite in Ruby's wealthy circle of acquaintances. The courtroom dialog was fantastic but did not overpower the story. There was a delightful twist at the end that I did not see coming. That was a real treat. Overall, this book was a bit out of my genre but I truly enjoyed it. The story is slow to take off as you are getting to know several main characters, but once it starts boiling the intensity really cranks up!
I tried really hard to like this, but there were so many confusing storylines and the only one I was really interested in was Ruby's and surprisingly Mr. Christmas'. I was shocked at the twist at the end, but there wasn't enough time spent on it.
I just finished “Witness 8” by Steve Cavanaugh and realized that it’s the 8th book in the Eddie Flynn series and I hope I can go back and read them all without spoilers.
Eddie takes the case of a beloved Doctor framed for murder and nothing is as it seems with numerous antagonists.
