This is an interesting collection of mostly lesser-known serial killers around the world, though I do not qualify the Golden State Killer as someone who is "lesser known." There are sufficient descriptions of what they did, who the victims were, how they were caught, and where they are now. It was a compelling read, haunting and disturbing, as one would anticipate. It wasn't objective reporting, as the author makes many comments about the crimes and such that illustrate his disgust. I don't qualify this as exploitative, and the author does address the idea of people paying a lot more attention to the killer and forgetting the victims. We're a weird species. We seek out things that scare us. And this book provides much of that for those who are fascinated by killers who exemplify the polar opposite of what we believe in.
This was an interesting audiobook, David Stifel sounded like an old Sleuth and that made the stories sound even more real, and that coming from and about a real serial killers true book story cases, is saying a lot. Let me just say this out loud, my trust in nice people that move into the neighbourhood has completely plummeted, I don’t think every case was deeply told, it would be impossible in such short space, but it was enough to get me interested in some cases search for more information, in other hand I wish I had access to the ebook, because I am sure that some photos must have been shared there.
I did enjoy both the narration, as I did the cases, explored here, most of the serial killers sounded like everyday people, and that makes me have less trust in strangers, if they sounded so nice to neighbours and even family, maybe I have cross paths with some at some point, its really a scary thought…
I recommend this book for “fans” of true crime, and since each chapter is a different serial killer, and the chapters are relatively short, its a nice bet to listen while you got to work or do some shores around the house.
Thank you NetGalley and HighBridge Audio, for the free ARC and this is my honest opinion.
This book is fantastic. It really makes you think about how you don't really know people, because these serial killers were just living among people while committing the most heinous acts. The narrator was great, too. I highly recommend this to anyone who finds the criminal mind interesting. It was such a different perspective.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me listen to this audiobook
This was fantastic. I really enjoyed it and couldn’t stop listening. I was hooked from the first minute! The narration was wonderful. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this audiobook.
The Serial Killer Next Door is a recollection of stories of various seemingly normal persons that hide horrendous sides. It covers several serials killers and goes into a little bit of the reasons as to why they could've done what they end up doing. This book is an interesting and concise version of the serial killer / true crime trope.
Being a true crime fan I was excited for this one, and the audio format of this book makes it more digestible. The narration makes it feel like I am listening to a podcast, which makes the reading experience a faster one.
