I received this free eARC novel from NetGalley. This is my honest review.
This has been on my TBR pile for so long, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. I really enjoyed the storyline and seeing the characters change throughout the story was a great character development. The plot was great and kept my attention. I'm glad I got the chance to read this and will be on the lookout for more in the future!
This was a witty coming of age story. Well written, it had me laughing out loud.
Many thanks to Berkley Publishing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I did not enjoy this book at all. The writing style was slow and childlike to me. I think the overall intentions were good but it unfortunately fell short. This isn’t something I would recommend out.
I was really looking forward to this book and having an open and blunt dialogue about sex but that isn't what I felt we got. It was blunt and it talked about sex, a lot but my problem was with the constant harping on the terribleness of being a virgin. It comes across as degrading and hateful to anyone who is or remains a virgin for longer than they should because it is 'bad". The messaging I took away didn't endure me to the character because it is never a good thing to shame someone in any way for their sexual preferences.
A very funny read for women who live in the 21st century and not those who still try to cling to 20+ years ago. Or those women who attempt to capture their youth when it has been long past. Some value virginity some believe it is something not worth bothering about. This book shows a little of both but the main thing is that we women have a choice in searching for Mr. Right Now and not Mr. Perfect.
I rarely finish a book. I just could not get into it. I disliked the main character. I did not finish and will not.
This will be a short review as I did not like this story. I found that I never related to the main character and quickly zoned out with the overall story. I did not agree with the constant choices that the MC made and couldn't stop rolling my eyes at her. She did nothing but whine about how awful it was to be a virgin. How could I possibly get on her side? How could I sit back and say, "Wow, she's got a point." She made it seem like it was the end of the world and end of her existence because she hadn't shagged some random guy. I wanted to scream at her, "DON'T DO IT! WHO CARES IF YOU'RE A VIRGIN?!"
This book really was not for me and I wish I had DNFd. I was just so disappointed with this story.
Interesting story. Very unexpected. I loved the humor. I enjoyed the way the story was told. Ellie took on a lot of coming of age tasks and approached them in a very unique way.
I am sorry to say that I gave this book 3 chapters to grab me, but it just didn't. In some ways I could relate to our main character, but overall I didn't enjoy the novel.
I received a copy via Netgalley. I was not compensated and what follows is my opinion.
I honestly couldn't finish this book. I couldn't really start it. I didn't care for the writing and I couldn't get into the main character. This just wasn't a book for me.
Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me.
Posted on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1949430136 DNF at 25%. I couldn't stand the main character anymore. She never came across as mature enough at 21. I found I didn't care if she ever lost her virginity.. _Kari
Virgin by Radhika Sanghani
3.8 Stars out of 5 stars
I don't laugh out loud on a normal basis, not even when I type lol on FB or when texting. I actually barely crack a smile 9 times out of 10, but this book had me laughing to the point of tears on a few occasions. The complete lack of pretentiousness and brutal honesty of how girls/women feel prior to losing their virginity is refreshing. Now I have to say it's obviously not everyone's experience but there is a little bit of everyone in Ellie's story.
Ellie is a college girl obsessed with the fact she's Greek, a virgin, a little too hairy, and not super model attractive. She's googled every concievable topic dealing with sex or the lack there of and named her few experiences after the horror they are. Her best friend Lara, and later Emma, are her polar opposites as friends usually are, but support her and love her for who she is.
So this story is basically Ellie's adventures of trying to lose her "V-plates," which is the British version of the American V-card and her "coming of age."
Sanghani is a fresh, comical, smooth writer who has made a fan of me!

I had a hard time finishing this book. I gave up a while ago and haven't come back to it until now. I aologize for not giving a proper review, but this title didn't entice me to read a substantial part of the book so I feel as though a review would be premature, especially since this was so long ago.
Best of luck,

Hysterically funny, Virgin, by new to me author Radhika Sanghani, delivers a story that introduces us to Ellie, a twenty-one year old virgin who is desperate to remedy that situation. Her journey along the way dealing with issues like waxing pubes, oral sex without biting, STD’s, and the proper kissing techniques are just some of the side-stitch producing belly laughs I got to experience while reading. We can all relate to Ellie, whether we are still virgins or not. We have all been where she is, at some point in our lives. What she and the rest of us have learned afterward is that virginity should be viewed as a gift, not a curse.
I found the characters easy to relate to and the story very funny as well as poignant. I did feel a little sad for Ellie after she learns some painful truths about herself and her chosen partner and the mistakes she makes along the way. But, once again, we have all been where she is, it’s all part of the growing up process in life. What I really liked about Ellie is that she doesn’t let fear or heartbreak stop her from chasing her dreams and I couldn’t help but cheer for her. I loved her friend, Emma, who turns out to be a strong ally for Ellie and her quest. Ellie’s best friend, Lara, took a while to appeal to me. I won’t tell you why because you need to read the book to find out. I thought Jack was an OK character, if not a little typical typecast as the potential partner for Ellie’s journey.
My Final Verdict: Overall, this was a fantastic story that had me laughing out loud no matter where I happened to be reading. I recommend this story to everyone, whether or not you are sexually active is irrelevant. This story is not about getting laid. It’s about a woman’s journey to find the acceptance she feels she is missing in her life, only to learn she has to accept herself first. I look forward to reading more by this talented author.
