This was a cute and easy read that had a little bit of mystery and a little bit of romance, but didn’t quite capitalize on either, hence the three stars.
Pomona Afton (who I could only picture as Paris Hilton) is a spoiled, hotel heiress who has fallen from grace after her grandmother’s suspicious death that led to her losing her home, her trust fund, and her friends. Thanks to her childhood nanny, she meets Gabe, the cranky coffee shop worker who has his own issues with Pomona, but who eventually becomes her unlikely ally in the efforts to solve Pom’s grandmother’s murder.
Overall, for a debut novel, I think Bellamy Rose did a good job. She wrote a character that had a progressive personality arc, and left breadcrumbs throughout the book to help solve the murder. However, I wasn’t pulled in completely by the mystery or the romance of this book. Both were somewhat lukewarm to me. But I would love to read more of her works as she develops more as a writer.
**thank you NetGalley and Atria Books for this ARC of Pomona Afton Can So Solve a Murder. All thoughts and opinions shared herein are my own and not necessarily a reflection of those of the aforementioned parties.
This was a fun mystery. Pomona was giving Paris Hilton and I really loved it because I love her. It was well written and ended nicely. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc ebook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Pomona was avoiding her grandmother’s calls and finally went up to her penthouse finding her stabbed multiple times, laying in a pool of blood. According to the will, all the family were to move out of their apartments in the hotel, lose their trust funds, and access to properties. These would be reinstated if the murderer was found within a year. Pomona had no place to go and had never worked so when she called her old nanny, she suggested she be her son’s roommate, and he could help her with a job. Gabe was a manger at a coffee shop while going to school to be a teacher. Gabe and Pomona decided if they could solve the murder, both would profit so they went about investigating possibilities. This book was a lot of fun as Pomona learned to give up her privileged life and had a better understanding of what Gabe’s life looked like. As they explored the possible murderers, they also found out a lot about themselves and their relationship. Great characters and murder mystery.
What an adorable murdery rom com this book was. Ponoma Afton, hotel heiress and full time party girl finds herself in a crappy situation when her terrible grandmother is found murdered. Her life as she knows it is over, she loses her home, assistant, and trust fund. The only way to get all of this back is to solve the murder. Easy right? Ponoma not only proves that people can learn and grow at any age, but also that she can so solve a murder (and really do anything)! This is perfect for fans of Gossip Girl or Only Murders in the Building. Thanks to Net Galley, the author, and publishers for the fun read!
This was so funny and cozy in may ways and very feel good. I loved every second of it and cannot recommend enough.
Absolutely fantastic romcom - cozy mystery! I'm always on the lookout for a cozy mystery that includes a healthy dose of comedy and romance and Pomona Afton Can So Solve A Murder did not disappoint!
Pomona Afton is like if Cher (Clueless) and Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) had a baby and that baby grew up to solve a murder! When the book begins Pomona is barely more than a spoiled heiress with nothing more on her resume than partying and attending various galas, but even then she's likable and I found myself rooting for her. Her naivety about the real world added a delightful humor that was endearing and had me laughing out loud. When she worked her first day in the coffee shop I just about died, her inner monologue was hysterical!
One of my favorite movies of all time is Legally Blonde - where we see Elle Woods (who is seen is nothing more than a blonde sorority girl and is grossly underestimated) blow everyone away with her intelligence and kind heart when she finally realizes her worth and strength. You'll get a similar story arc with Pomona, who is grossly underestimated (even by her own family) and must step up to solve her own grandmother's murder.
Gabe was the perfect balance to Pomona, starting as the grump to her naive sunshine and ending up as the sweetest cinnamon roll roommate/love interest and sidekick to solving the murder.
The mystery itself was incredibly well done....I'll won't give anything away but it was good. It kept me guessing and I was happy to see I guessed the murderer right along with our sleuth. I think there's an art to writing a cozy that keeps your reader guessing but gives them enough clues to solve it with the sleuth, Bellamy Rose seems to have mastered this art.
I thought the premise of the mystery was fresh and unique, not something you typically see in a cozy and it worked! The very last chapter seemed to hint that there could be more books for Pomona and Gabe in the future?? I certainly hope that's true because that book would be at the top of my TBR!
Sweet/Cozy - the mystery is cozy (no gore or on page violence, nothing overtly scary or intense)
Closed Door romance - there is no spice/sex in the romance department, the last chapter seems to imply the characters living together before marriage
Language - moderate use of some heavy laungage (including a couple of f-bombs & taking the Lord's name in vain), not my typical cup of tea but if you can overlook some swearing I'd say the story is worth it, the cursing is sparse enough that it's not too distracting
Overall it's an excellent read, well done mystery, fantastic main character that you'l be rooting for from the beginning, and a sweet romance!
I flew through this book and enjoyed every minute of it. It was nice being able to watch Pom grow as a character and I always love a little romance in a murder mystery.
I ADORED THIS. The perfect mix of cozy mystery and romcom. Riches to rags isn’t my usual favorite character type, but Pomona is lovable to a scary degree. Even at her worst, I was rooting for her. And the mystery was so fun! Plus, I loved Gabe & their buddy cop thing. Everything in this book works so well on every level. Truly adored.
Fantastic cozy mystery! Poor Pomona Afton. Literally. After Pomono's super-rich, hotel chain-owning grandmother is brutally murdered, Pomona and her family discover there is a clause in her grandmother's will that states if she dies under suspicious circumstances, then everyone's inheritance goes on hold until the perpetrator is caught. That also means that no one can stay in their super fancy Afton Hotel apartment suites. It was fun tagging along with Pomona as she discovered her own self-worth, grew up and embarked on the challenge of solving the murder and bringing the killer to justice.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Pomona Afton Can So Solve a Murder is a charming, funny , feel - good read with a self-reflective redemption twist,
This book has my two favorite genres in it: romance and murder mystery.
Pomona, Pom for short, grew up on money she did not earn, everything from fresh towels that magically appear each day to a chef who can always anticipate when she is and isn't going gluten-free is handed to her wrapped up in a healthy trust fund set up by her grandmother.
Queen of Afton Hotels Pom’s grandma is mean and a lot of people hated her the way she hated them. Much to the surprise of her favorite granddaughter, she is murdered. Cold, cunning, and calculated Grandma had a feeling this might happen and put in her will if there was foul play the life that Pom leads without worry would be ripped away from her and her family until the killer is found. Forced into figuring out what real life is like the hard way. Pom contacts the one person she knows has always been there, or at least had been for 12 years of her life. Her old nanny, Andrea. While Pomona is trying to find a place of her own Andrea’s son, Gabe, is looking for a roommate. This works out great for Pomona. It doesn’t take all that much convincing for Pom to form a crush on Gabe since he is so nice and understanding even though Pom is a real piece of work.
Encouraged by Gabe, to solve her own grandma’s murder so she can swiftly get back to her old life on the Upper East side of Manhattan far far far away from coin laundry.
This book was very much a palate cleanser for me. It helped that it was on the short side. However, there were twists and turns so solving the murder was not linear, which I enjoyed. As fun as it was to watch a ditsy rich person fall on their behind, Pom came around for me. Personal growth and all that. I enjoyed the quick wit, agonizing along with Pomona and her 21st-century problems, as well as going along for the ride as she finds her sense of self and her grandma’s murderer.
Honorable mention: I loved the cat.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing this ARC for my honest review.
Great murder mystery with a splash of romance. Pom and Gabe are a great match together. Can’t wait to read more of this duo!
Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for this arc.
I would best describe this book as Gossip Girl meets Schitts Creek and Only Murders in the Building. It was a really fun Mashup of New York Socialite loses everything and has to solve a murder in her building and along the way discovers her true self.
Pom was selfish and stuck up and treated people terribly but it's easy to see tbe toxicity that led to her earlier attitude. Her mother and grandmother were awful and critical. It's no wonder she had such low self esteem and a bad attitude to start.
I really loved the progression of her finding her passions in baking, rekindling old friendships and finding the family that supports her rather than ridiculed her.
My one qualm is that the murderer was too easy to guess. However the author did a good job of deflecting later on. I did second guess myself for a bit.
Fans of socialties redeeming themselves for their behaviors will love this story.
This was a fun, quick read. Some of it is a little unbelievable, but overall, it's very entertaining. A filthy rich socialite who has never worked a day in her life loses everything in one night. She moves in with her nanny's son and discovers she's apparently a fantastic baker—whipping up sugary treats like she was born to do it. Meanwhile, she and her roommate investigate a murder - forget the police. There are characters you love and several you love to hate. The book keeps you guessing who the murderer is, and the reveal is good! This is a great beach read!
This is a really cute murder mystery with a dash of little rich girl gone broke. I think it's a great book for fans of Elle Cosimano's Finley Donovan series (which I am). It's an easy read, too, which is always nice when you want to just get into a story and have fun and not get slowed down by heavy line level prose (there's a time and a place for that, tho). I think this would make a great Christmas gift, too, for any person who could use a fun little escape - which really - is all of us, am I right?
What a delightfully fun read this was! I'm not always a fan of the rich-girl-learns-her-lesson story, as they tend to be either overly melodramatic or overly preachy, but something drew me to this one (probably the cover, honestly) and I'm so glad that I read it!
It was a very fun and engaging and often hilarious tale that offered personal growth, personal responsibility, and a lot of zany antics that contributed to the plot and weren't just there for comic effect. I found Pom to be endearing - surprisingly so, frankly - like a modern day Cher Horowitz (that's a Clueless reference if you didn't catch it). She means well, generally speaking, but is a product of her environment and that often gets her into trouble when she butts up against the reality of the world-as-is rather than the world-as-has-coddled-her.
I found the writing and story easy to fall into and the mix of serious topics blended with silliness made it an enjoyable and entertaining read. I will definitely keep my eye out for more from Bellamy Rose!
Pomona Afton is a wealthy hotel heiress who has never had to work for anything. She lives in a luxury hotel and has never had a true job. Her grandmother is the matriarch of the family and is control of the family business. When Grandma Afton ends up being brutally murdered, the clause in her will was triggered to put a hold on all funds for the family until her death is fully investigated. This leaves Pomona looking for a new job and a place to live. Luckily, Gabe, the hot son of Pomona's former nanny, is in need of a roommate and can offer Pomona a job working at the local coffee shop. Between learning how to live in the real world and trying to solve her grandmother's murder, Pomona finds her true self and a passion for baking.
This is a cute YA love story with an interesting plot line that kept me engaged throughout the whole book. It was an easy read for anyone looking for a romance with a dash of murder mystery.
Sadly this is a DNF for me. I tried I really did. I got to about 43% and then flipped to the ending to see where our characters ended. Overall I had a real hard time connecting to our main character. She was a self-centered brat and often times remind me of Caroline from 2 Broke Girls (PS Also hated that character) The only reason I read for as far as I did was because of Gabe. And honestly I thought he deserved better. Even though this wasn’t for me, I’d still say give it a shot especially if you’re a mystery girly. Thank you to NetGalley & Atria Books for providing me an arc to read and review!
Gossip girl vibezzzz. It was a fun mystery! Pamona was annoying but that’s probably why it gave me gossip girl feels. Thanks for the ARC netgalley!
