Mismatched is a cute, queer retelling of the classic matchmaking romance, Emma--a story which was popularized again in the 90s with the film Clueless. I both read a physical copy of this book, as well as listened to the audiobook (my first experience listening to an audiobook of a graphic novel). I loved the Archie-esque graphics, and the bright color palette of the physical panels. And I really appreciated the level of detail paid to the audio production. Overall, though, I struggled a bit with the story, and I'm not sure the graphic novel format worked best for what the author was trying to convey. I think that without my pre-existing knowledge of the story, I would have really struggled to follow along with what was happening. The story almost felt like a series of bullet points (this happened, then this happened, then this happened), and there were too many characters with not quite enough character development. Still, I appreciated what the author was trying to do here, and I think my several of my students will enjoy this one, so I'll be adding it to my classroom library.

I listened to the audio version of Mismatched. I have seen some very positive reviews of the book, but I didn't feel that it translated well to audio. I think the main character was supposed to be lovingly annoying, but without facial expressions and visible interactions, he just came across as...annoying. It seemed like there was little character build up as well. We just jumped right into fully developed characters as if we already knew their personalities. Perhaps some of that is conveyed in the book, but it felt missing in the audiobook. In terms of audio quality, it was strong. There were lots of sound effects and audible transitions from section to section. Considering all of that was there and I still found the book a bit confusing, I think perhaps it was a graphic novel that didn't translate well to audio.

Anne Camlin’s Mismatched is a delightful romantic comedy brimming with charm and wit. With sparkling dialogue and lovable characters, Camlin crafts a heartfelt story about love, second chances, and embracing imperfections. This feel-good romance is as hilarious as it is heartwarming.

A perfect pick for fans of quirky, opposites-attract love stories.

This was such a fun listen. The cast for each of the characters was completely spot on for their personalities in the book. Very well narrated. I will definitely be purchasing the graphic novel so I can see if the characters look like they sound.

I think an audiobook of a graphic novel is a bit of a stretch. The story itself was cute and reminiscent of heartstopper, but as an audiobook it missed the mark

I didn't realize when I requested this audiobook that it was a graphic novel. That said, I think if I had known that, I wouldn't have gone for the audiobook and gotten the ebook instead. When I realized it, it was too late to request the ebook. However, I did enjoy this full cast recording of this modern day Emma set in a NYC high school. I think having the different narrators made this feel so much like a TV show, and I rather liked that.

One thing I didn't like about this was that there were so many characters for such a short book that it felt like we never got to know them as in-depth as I would have liked. Even Evan seemed to lack some character development. I just wish we would have spent more time getting to know these characters and it wouldn't have felt so rushed.

A solid 3 ⭐️ I love modern retellings of classics so I was super excited for this one, especially with the queer storyline! The full cast and narration were fantastic. Really seemed to capture the characters and made it very enjoyable. Overall, though, I feel like it lacked some substance and I look forward to reading the graphic novel print version to fill in those gaps that feel missing in the audio. I enjoyed the character development because at the start of the book, Evan drove me bonkers 😂 A sweet story with great audio!

This one was just okay. I’m usually all for coming of age stories with messy queers finding themselves, but I couldn’t stand the MMC. He clearly has his own agenda for who his friends should and should not be interested in, which was infuriating.

This one was definitely a short and sweet moment. I will have to read this again in the future with the illustrations because the story definitely felt a bit lacking without them. I loved the variety of queer representation in the book actually written by a queer person.

With the shortness of the book it was a bit of a challenge to follow who was who without all of the pictures. That said, all of the drama made the time actually jam-packed with things going on. If anything, it felt over-abbreviated because it was so short. I wanted more from all of their stories and developing their relationships more.

The characterization in the book was pretty fantastic. All of the subtle nods to queer culture felt affirming but natural. All of the couples in the end seemed well-matched (pun kinda intended).

In sum, I'd love to see a more fleshed-out version of the story. If you are able to read a print or digital copy you would probably have a better reading experience in total. The story itself was cute and well-written.

I was not a of this story. All of the characters seemed surface level which was a shame because there was so many different characters and had so much potential. Evan, the main character, was intolerable and I was not a fan of him at all. I was pretty disappointed because I think there was so much potential but it just didn't live up to what I was expecting.

This book was extremely cute. I listened to the audiobook and loved the full cast audio as well as the sound effects. It was a really immersive experience. I’m excited to read the graphic novel too when it comes out so I also have the chance to see the great artwork. As for the story, I’m not familiar with Emma, however, I did think it was a great short and sweet story. As the title suggests, it’s surrounds a group of high schoolers where everyone is going after the wrong person. I did find the main character a little mean-spirited at times, but it’s also YA so we’re watching the character mature in real time over the course of the book. I thought it all wrapped up nicely and would definitely be willing to read/listen to something from this author again in the future.

High school drama, sexuality identity drama, relationship drama - this short audio adapts the graphic novel perfectly. I loved the additional background noises and music interludes between chapters. Evan wasn't particularly lovable but he's a young kid figuring out the type of person he is and will be and who he is towards his friends. Overall, it was a great listen.

I liked how this audiobook had a whole cast of characters and how there were even sound effects. It is quite captivating to listen to but I feel like it's best enjoyed while following along with the book.

This was such a fun and cute audiobook. I rly liked all the voices and the background effects. I'm a sucker for Jane Austen adaptations and this one held up pretty well! I think I would have liked it a lot more if I had "read" it so I could see the illustrations as well, but the story holds up anyway!

I really liked the idea of the book and it was fun to listen it with all the different narrators and sound effects. Sadyl I didn't really like the story in the end. Most of the time I was annoyed by Evan and how he behaved. Maybe I would have liked the story more if I had read it and not listened to it.

This was my first time ever doing an audiobook of a graphic novel but this was just a delight! The cast did an amazing job and the story is truly so cute. Full disclosure that I’m a huge fan of Emma, so any retelling of it will probably land for me. But this was done in a very fresh way that celebrates being LGBTQ+ and felt very relatable and real. I absolutely want to go check out the actual graphic novel now! Highly recommended!

This was so short, but so impressing. It is the first time I listen to an audiobook with so many sound effects and so large narrators list. It was an awesome job! Very well done!
As for the story itself, it would just flew in a minute. This is how it felt to me. It was short, not missing the signature elements of Emma, but having its own style and interpretation.
I am sorry I missed the graphics, I will make sure to find the paper edition.

This book provides insight into the fraught social pressures and etiquette of young romance. It is a whimsically gay and modern retelling of Jane Austen for teen readers.
