This was so short, but so impressing. It is the first time I listen to an audiobook with so many sound effects and so large narrators list. It was an awesome job! Very well done!
As for the story itself, it would just flew in a minute. This is how it felt to me. It was short, not missing the signature elements of Emma, but having its own style and interpretation.
I am sorry I missed the graphics, I will make sure to find the paper edition.

This book provides insight into the fraught social pressures and etiquette of young romance. It is a whimsically gay and modern retelling of Jane Austen for teen readers.

For the record, I haven’t read Emma. So I didn’t know where the plot was going to go. And this was my experience reading Mismatched:

The pacing felt weird. I found it confusing, since a lot of names were tossed around since the beginning. The main things were about Evan who like to matchmaking his friends or figuring out who’s interested in who, and maintaining a safe queer community. I actually love the illustrations style, the way the colors are bright but soft and just eye pleasing to see. Also everyone got their happy ending so there’s that.

but BOY the audiobook is PHENOMENAL. full cast, full sound effect, even extra narratives that added more context that's not plainly "written" in the graphic novel. literally felt like audio from a popular young-adult TV show. loved it so much.

Set in an average high school, Evan is sure that he is great at matchmaking. You see he introduced his sister to her husband, and that relationship resulted in a niece, so he is a pro right? As the resident pro, he “helps” his friends in the Gay Straight Alliance at school. This retelling of the Classic Emma was a delightful romp through high school and would be great in public, middle, or high school collections.

I wish that Evan had been more flexible in his pairings. It seemed odd for a member of GSA to be black and white with his choosing.

It was a cute book that will be appealing to teens and tweens.

I previously read an eARC of this book, so I was really curious to see how it would come across on audio, especially since it’s the audio of a graphic novel. I really enjoyed the choice of a large cast of narrators, which at least helped differentiate between characters. Since I’ve already read the book, I can’t speak for how understandable it is reading purely by audio, and I would say you don’t really get a great sense of how to picture certain characters, and regardless it’s very coloured by Evan’s view of them. I do still have mixed feelings about the pacing of the overall story, but in some ways I enjoyed it more knowing what happens. I also generally enjoyed the use of background noises to establish the environment when the art couldn’t, although there were a few times audio cut off or got really quiet to communicate smaller bubbles of text which was a little annoying personally. In general, I think the story is readable by audio and this was a great production, but it is a slightly different experience than reading the actual graphic novel.

The audio of this made the story more interesting. It is why I give the book 3 stars instead of 2. I struggled with the main character Evan a lot. He is not the greatest person and his big character growth thing was a baked good and an ok apology? The resolution seemed really rushed, and even though our character didn’t have what I saw as real growth, he still got what he wanted most in the end. It just felt a bit of a blah story to me. On the other end of the spectrum though, the audio narrators did a really great job and it was generally easy to know who was speaking. Listening to an audio of a graphic novel was definitely an interesting experience.

Graphic novels turned into audiobooks are a great way to make the format more accessible. Unfortunately, for me this audiobook didn't really work. The story wasn't paced right and there definitely seemed to be pieces missing that can be better told through the graphic novel. Not recommended.

Did feel like there was too much being shoved into a singualr story and the flow was off. I do see people who like Heartstopper maybe being interested in reading this. Good for tweens and teens.

With the audio specifically, if I wasn't also able to see a phyiscal copy I would have been left so confused. So I do think it's great audio to go along with reading the book!

Thanks to NetGalley & the publisher for the ARC!

I wasn't sure how to rate this. It has a VERY slow start which almost made me turn it off, however I kept on going and I was glad I did. It's only a short audiobook and I liked that. The sound effects were cool once I knew they were happening. I had to check my phone a few times because I thought I got a text. I new how it would end half way through so there were no major twists or turns to look out for.

I thought it was super cute, I started off hating Evan although that soon changed with the input from a certain someone I won't name because spoliers suck. If you're unsure, I'd give it a listen. Like I said, slow start but due to it being a short audiobook, you don't have to wait long for it to start getting better. Some of the charachters did grate on me a little and it was a touch repetative in areas. The jingle played throughout for the scene change was a little irritating but I loved that there was more than one narrator which is always a nice touch.

I got this ARC from netgalley and I'm glad I did.

3.75 of 5 stars.

Cute & short modern day version of “Emma.” Would have loved for this to be at least two times longer - more character development & set-up for the climax & conclusion!
Multiple narrators for multiple characters is always a positive.

I really need to look at the descriptions better when requesting books! Or when I read the descriptions, to really read them, maybe at least tree times.

The premise of the story is a very modern twist on the classic novel, Emma. Having a person who is makes their way into everyone's love life and completely oblivious to their own. The MC is Evan, a high schooler who is very popular, and is the leader of the GSA club. He fashions himself as a matchmaker, but eventually learns to stop meddling in other's love interests. Along the way, he finds out that someone close to him is actually the one he's meant to be with. Spoiler? Possibly, Not really if you know Emma and can have a good sense as to where things are going.

The narrators of the book were diverse and greatly enjoyed. I did find the other sound effects to be distracting at times. There were times that there seemed to be gaps in the story line and was a little difficult at times to follow along. Had to rewind and replay a few parts. Especially when there was a fade out and I was unsure what character was attached to a certain voice.

Mismatched is truly a young adult, coming of age, LGTBAIA love story. Very age appropriate, and not in any way in your face with romance. Very demure.

Thank you Netgalley, Hachette Audio | Little, Brown Young Readers, and the author for the opportunity to read this for an honest review.

I will be posting to Instagram, Goodreads, and Storygraph. Will consider posting to retail sites at a later time.

Story: 4⭐️
Narration: 5⭐️

I love a retelling, especially of Emma (my favorite Austen!) and am always interested to see how graphic novels are reworked for audio. Mismatched is a lighthearted, modern retelling that embodies the spirit of Austen’s Emma and such a delight to read. The high school setting was a wonderful fit and I loved the diverse cast. The only downside is that it’s very short and with so many plot points and characters, the story feels rushed and slightly unfinished. Also, the overall story could be confusing if you aren’t familiar with Emma’s plot.

The full cast narration was fantastic and so much fun. I loved the musical interludes and the sound effects and background music elevated the listening experience and made it so engaging. I am looking forward to reading a physical copy to experience the art work, but I thoroughly enjoyed this fully immersive listening experience and I think YA readers will too!

I have never read Emma before, so I’m sure some of the comparisons were lost on me but the book can stand alone even without that. The plot was very fast paced and a light read for the most part. Definitely a good option if you don’t have a lot of time to read and you just want something fun.

Because there was such a big cast and the audiobook was pretty short, it doesn’t really give you enough time to learn to tell the voice actors apart. This made it confusing at times and certain characters kind of blended in with others. I did think all the voice actors were great, there were just a lot of time in a short time. The background and scene transition music were both very loud and distracting. I did like the other effects (chips crunching, cheering, etc).

Because I listened to the audiobook, I didn’t see any of the illustrations and I feel like I also missed a bit because of that.

I am thankful to have gotten the audioARC for free from Netgalley and Hatchett Audio so I can leave my voluntary review.

I really enjoyed this short listen. This is a graphic novel so listening to the audio book is missing a huge piece of the experience. But even with that, the narrators did a great job along with the sound effects.

It kept me engaged and it was cute. Lived the representation and it seemed true to teenagers. I think teens of a certain age will love this book. I am awaiting the physical copy so I can see the illustrations so I may amend this once I see them as I expect it’ll make it an even better experience and fill in the gaps.

I love the D&D references and glad they explained the difference between it and LARPing. D&D is having a moment and I am here for it.

But even still this is a solid audiobook that one can enjoy even without the illustrations.

My rating system for Middle Grade and children’s books

⭐️ Significant problems and would never recommend to the audience.
⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, really not my cup of tea but may have some appeal.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ an ok book which I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend but it has some value for young readers
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed it! I would recommend for the age or reading level appropriate for the book
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! Would recommend highly, especially to school programs as a wide spread reading opportunity.

A full-cast recording with the addition of atmospheric background noise was a really interesting way of turning a graphic novel into an audiobook. I found myself disliking Evan at points. However, I felt exactly the same about Emma in the Austen novel this is based on, so I would say that dislike of Evan is actually a credit to the author for their ability to hold true to the source materials while adding an interesting spin on the story. It was sometimes hard to keep track of which voice belongs to which character, and with how short the book was and without the aid of illustrations, some of the smaller characters felt left behind by the production. I think I would have preferred to read the physical graphic novel more, but this was an enjoyable listen!

This was a super cute audiobook! It had a great cast of narrators, and felt very slice of life in the best way. Every character was in this story for a reason, and the 'drama' was never too serious that it made me feel too sad, so if you're looking for a lighthearted read, then this is perfect! Just a cute little love story(for a few characters actually!), and had some much needed LGBTQ+ representation.

I didn’t realize this was originally a graphic novel haha that makes more sense now. The story is great, entertaining, and perfect for tweens/teens to engage with a classic story in a more modern way. The audiobook is excellent, the narrators did an amazing job nailing the voices I was blown away by how they brought the characters to life! I felt I would have enjoyed this more if I could have seen the illustrations, however, I did not feel I lacked enjoyment of the story. Although I know I am not the main target for this story (I am a woman in my 20s) I feel that everything was well done!

Great for the kids! Cute and fun!

This is one of the most fun audiobooks I've listened to! So many narrators and sound effects! I feel like listening to the audiobook while following along with the graphic novel would be such a fun time! I have never read Emma so I'm not exactly sure how it stands up in comparison but I enjoyed my time listening! I definitely need to re-read the physical so I can admire the art!

Cute, very Casey mcquintson, meets Heartbreakers series. Love retelling of classics since honestly I'm not a huge fan of classics... and holy walls batman did the voice cast deliver
