Spooky asylum vibes and a MC questioning her sanity. The story kept me engaged like any other Freida McFadden book even though I could kind of predict where it was going. I still liked this book even if it went where I thought.
Ward D by Frieda McFadden is an absolutely gripping psychological thriller that deserves all five stars. From the very first chapter, McFadden pulls you into a twisted, dark narrative filled with suspense and unexpected turns. The story takes place in a mental health ward, where the protagonist finds herself trapped in a web of lies, manipulation, and shocking secrets.
McFadden’s writing is sharp and immersive, with a pacing that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The characters are complex and compelling, especially the protagonist, whose struggle with trust and survival is both heartbreaking and intense. The sense of claustrophobia in the hospital setting adds to the tension, making every page pulse with anticipation.
The twists in Ward D are expertly executed, taking the reader down a path they never saw coming. McFadden is a master of psychological suspense, building an atmosphere of dread that lingers long after the book ends. The way the plot unravels is nothing short of brilliant—full of surprises, dark secrets, and a final revelation that will leave you stunned.
This book is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers. It’s dark, addictive, and thought-provoking—definitely one of the best thrillers I’ve read in a long time. Five stars without a doubt! I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my review.
Thank you Netgalley and Poisoned Press for an advanced copy of McFaddens upcoming novel," Ward D". Emily is a med student who unfortunately needs to do a night shift in Ward D, the psych ward of the hospital. She is anxious from the start, worried that someone will confuse her with the patients. As the night begins, odd things start to happen, but the most puzzling event is that she finds out her childhood best friend is a patient in the ward. The night unravels and in typical McFadden fashion, nothing ever is as it seems. I enjoyed this book, but this one was a little more predictable with the surprises being less punchy.
Such an amazing book and will keep you guessing until the very end. Every time I think I've figured it out, something happens and I'm right back where I started. Frieda McFadden is amazing and one of my absolute favorite authors.
Thank you to NetGalley for this review copy!
This novel follows Amy, a medical student who is dreading a night shift in Ward D, but she dreads it for an unknown reason which slowly gets revealed as the book goes on. The book shifts between two timelines, the present and when she was a high school student. It almost felt as though there were little separate storylines going on which made me wonder what it had to do with the main plot. The end confused me a little bit but at the same time, it was kind of perfect. I find it hard to read consistently when a book is boring, but this one was really fast-paced - I finished this book in a day. The mental health representations are definitely off, so if you're expecting something related to the importance of mental health there isn't any of that. In fact, a lot of the disorders mentioned didn't necessarily link to the characters and what they did...? But overall, as a thriller book, this was a really fun read. There were lots of plot twists and lots of chapters had like a mini cliffhanger which made you excited to read on. The whole story takes place over one night, which also makes it feel very thrilling and fast paced.
I enjoyed 93% of this book but am so soooo very upset with the ending. I did find this was enjoyable and as always, her books are very nice to fly through!
Ward D follows a med student working in a psych ward for the night, I like the psychiatric side of her writing more than just the crime side. The crime side tends to feel unrealistic and leave me disappointed… which is where I found myself at the end of this book. This gets 3 stars because I enjoyed nearlyyy the whole book!
This is the fifth book I’ve read by this author, and oh my god, the suspense kept me hooked until the very end! I’m a huge fan of her writing style and her plotlines. I found myself doubting every character. As for the plot twist, I kind of saw it coming. I had a theory that turned out to be partially right. Still, it was an excellent read, and I absolutely loved it.
That being said, I am never reading another psychological thriller set in a psychiatric ward… especially not at 2 a.m. !
The book has a slow burn but it builds the story keeping you enthralled in the plot, I never saw the ending coming. Would recommend if you are a fan of thrillers.
Freida has done it again. All of her books have the best twists and turns. While this one wasn't my absolute favorite (I've never really been a fan of medical books), I still really enjoyed it because of her writing style.
I was on EDGE reading this book, I don't think I've ever felt so tense when reading, I could feel Amy's panic.
A must read thriller.
4 stars.
**A Gripping, Unforgettable Thriller – *Ward D* by Freida McFadden**
*Ward D* by Freida McFadden is an absolute rollercoaster of suspense and mystery! From the very first page, the tension is palpable, and I was hooked on Amy Brenner’s harrowing night on the psychiatric ward. As a medical student assigned to a dreaded overnight rotation on Ward D, Amy has personal reasons for avoiding this particular unit, and the more I read, the more those reasons started to make sense. McFadden masterfully builds an atmosphere of claustrophobia and unease that had me on edge the entire time.
The plot twists are sharp and unexpected, keeping you guessing until the very last page. When patients and staff begin to vanish without a trace, the stakes couldn’t be higher, and Amy’s growing realization that something sinister is unfolding around her had me completely hooked. The suspense ramps up with every passing hour, and I found myself racing through the pages, desperate to know what would happen next.
Amy is an incredibly relatable protagonist, and her inner turmoil, combined with the mounting danger, makes her journey all the more intense. As she navigates the mystery of the disappearing people, you can't help but root for her as she tries to survive the nightmare of Ward D—and figure out what’s really going on behind its locked doors.
Freida McFadden has crafted a psychological thriller that keeps you in suspense from start to finish. *Ward D* is a perfectly paced, high-stakes mystery that will have you questioning everything. If you’re a fan of thrilling, edge-of-your-seat reads with a surprising twist, this book is an absolute must-read!
What an absolute RIDE!
I was going back and forth the entire book on whether or not the main character was crazy, eventually at the end I got my answer, I think?
This was such a classic Frieda book, it had so many twists and turns, kept me guessing and sent my head spinning more than a few times.
One of my favorite things about it was I was completely glued to the pages and anytime I had to set the book down my mind continued spinning trying to put all the pieces together.
I don’t typically enjoy books where everything takes place in the same setting, but I think this one was so well done and creepy it kept me entertained the entire time and I didn’t mind it at all.
This was really well done and I think it’s a great thriller for anyone to jump into.
Thank you so much to Frieda McFadden and netgalley for my arc copy, my opinions are my own.
Amy is a medical student and her current assignment is to spend the night in a psychiatric ward of the hospital. She is very nervous about this and with good reason. As with McFadden books the story is full of twists and turns around every corner.
Not my favorite Frieda McFadden book. I feel like the set up for this book was really similar to The Inmate. Girl working as doctor in high stakes area where she secretly has a past entangled in the place. The plot was suspenseful but a little predictable. I also feel like there was a lot of calling the members of the psych ward crazy and scary and I feel like this perpetuates bad stereotypes of the mentally ill.
This was surprisingly good! I couldn't wait to get back to it! I knew what was going to happen in the end
Thank you NetGalley and Publisher for allowing me to read and review this book.
I very much enjoyed this book. The writing was great and the characters were well developed. I hope to read more from this author in the future.
I read this book in an afternoon. Quick read! The story takes you through an evening rotation shift of Cam and Amy, medical students ,on Ward D. The twists and turns kept me wanting to find out what was going to happen. Very suspenseful. Enjoyed it.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press and the author for this ARC

Frieda McFadden delivers another strong suspenseful thriller with Ward D. I read this is one weekend.
Amy Brenner is a medical student who is due for her psych rotation at the hospital's in-patient mental facility, know as Ward D. She is dreading this, but not for the reasons one many typically expect. She is dreading this because of the last time she was there. No one can find out about this. She just needs to get through this one shift and move forward,
As the night slowly moves on, she feels more and more that something is terribly off in this locked down ward. Although the Dr and nurse on duty try to reassure her that all is well, her gut tells her otherwise. She should really trust her gut.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was my first experience with Freida McFadden's work. I've obviously heard great things, since her books are huge right now, but I think overhype lead to a bit of a let-down for me. Ward D was fine! It was a perfectly fine book, I didn't have any negative feelings about it. That said, her work does kind of feel like it's meant for people new to the genre, and not so much for seasoned psychological thriller readers. Overall, I think this would be a wonderful introduction to the genre, and the more eerie psych ward setting could bridge the gap for horror readers looking to get into psych thriller.
Thank you to the publisher and Frieda for this e-ARC. This was previously published, but being rereleased.
Amy, a medical student has to go to ward D for a night to work. Creepy things start happening throughout the night. Will she make it out alive? It was entertaining and a quick read. Frieda always gets your mind moving and thinking. I wouldn’t say it was my fave Frieda book of all time, but it was enjoyable.
