Ward D is packed full of quick, bingeable, unexpected twists. The mental health representation is a little lacking, but I don’t read McFadden for realism.

4.5 stars out of 5.

Another great read by Freida McFadden. I was immediately drawn into the book and could not put it down. The characters were all pretty unlikeable but that really made the story better. I found myself constantly guessing what will happen next and what was reality. The reveal towards the ending was crazy and I did not expect that. If you are a fan of any of Freida McFadden's books, you will want to read this one!

In Ward D we meet Amy who is a medical student. She has to spend the night in the psych ward for part of her training. It turns out, this isn't her first visit to Ward D. Her best friend from high school spent some time here years ago. Amy is not looking forward to this at all but has no other choice. Weird things start to happen and Amy is left questioning her own reality.

Thank you Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book is a chilling, psychological thriller that hooks you from the start. The sense of isolation and creeping dread in the locked psychiatric ward is palpable, and Amy’s growing suspicion about the sinister happenings keeps you on edge. The writing keeps you questioning what’s real and what’s a product of Amy’s fear, making you feel as trapped and uneasy as she does. The pace is relentless, with twists and turns that build up the tension to a terrifying climax. If you love suspenseful stories with a haunting atmosphere and a slow burn that spirals into terror, this one will keep you turning pages late into the night.

Ward D is a psychological thriller that follows Amy, a medical student on her first overnight shift in a mysterious psychiatric ward. The author does a great job of creating suspense. The isolated hospital setting is so vividly described that you can almost feel the claustrophobia and hear the eerie silence of the night. The twists and turns are non-stop, and just when you think you’ve figured it out, the story throws another curveball. If you’re looking for something that keeps you on the edge of your seat, this book is worth a try!

I didn’t know this was set for re-release! I had not read it prior. Definitely fits the genre of a thriller 😅 Remind me never to seek employment in a psych ward, for literally any reason! Well told story. Tension was built slowly which allowed me to be on the edge of my seat. McFadden is masterful.

Ward D by Freida McFadden is an older book that is set for re-release. (I didn't know that when I first read this book)

Medical student Amy is terrified of the psych ward and you guessed it, has to work there overnight. She is convinced that the staff is going missing and something is happening - and it is. Will she survive?

I didn't like the way that McFadden had Amy constantly use the word "crazy" in reference to the patients who were in the psych ward and seeking help. It took everything away from the book that I could like about the character and care what happened to her. As a doctor herself, I would think she would know that this is so derogatory.

I didn't enjoy this one, despite having enjoyed her newer books. The book read to me like a very (VERY) bad horror movie.

Despite that, thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

I have just finished reading the book as opposed to listening to it, also sent to me by NetGalley a few months ago. I enjoyed the written word a lot more than listening to the audio version! It was more creepy and the mental images even more scary. I still disliked Amy's immaturity immensely, but the plot was too compelling to just think of her! Hence a 4* for the story as a book version as opposed to a 3* for the audiobook.

4.25/5

I really don't think I've read any other Freida McFadden books before, but I know they're so hyped and everyone loves them (so I was very excited to read this one). And after this one, I will definitely be reading more!

I had a lot of fun reading this, it was fast and it was captivating. And, of course, spooky and suspenseful.

This follows our main character as she works in a psychiatric unit, but things are getting spooky and weird and people may not be telling the full truth (especially about themselves).

This book did a good job of slowly building the tension (but too slowly where the reader will find themselves getting bored) throughout the book and then has a massive crescendo at the very end. Things start to fall into place and then they change and then again the FULL truth is revealed and then even more is revealed. This book leaves you just in shock, making you rethink everything you thought you knew prior to the very end and its reveal.

I would definitely recommend this, I had such a good time. And it's short enough where you could probably read this in one sitting if you really wanted to.

Thanks to NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review! My Goodreads review is up and my TikTok (Zoe_Lipman) review will be up at the end of the month with my monthly reading wrap-up.

If there’s anything I took away from this book, it’s that I’m NEVER working in a psych ward. HELL NO.

This was haunting and terrifying and intriguing all at once and I was so beyond bone chilled while reading.

Absolutely loved this piece by McFadden! She is amazing with most of her work and this was no exception! Another book that will have you thinking you know what will happen, but still managing to turn your world upside down. Amazing work!

Overall, the story is excellent, and as is typical of McFadden, it's a suspenseful read that keeps you guessing until an outrageous revelation or plot twist occurs. Don't worry, I won't give anything away, but this is a gripping tale with plenty of suspense and tension, as well as some interesting turns that were generally nice.
Despite the fact that "Ward D" is a true page-turner, I had higher expectations for the conclusion. Although it was fine, I had hoped for a little more. particularly in light of some incidents and circumstances that involved elements that I didn't find entirely credible. Particularly in regard to the primary character.

I think this is my favourite Freida McFadden book, or at least in my top 3!

I love themes surrounding psych wards as it’s always hard to tell what is reality and what should be believed.

I definitely didn’t see the twist coming (as usual) and was a fan of the overall ending.

A guaranteed fast paced thriller with twists and quirks as you usually get with Freida’s writing style. I’ll be a Freida fan until my last breath 😂

okay so this book took me on a ride. i had no clue what was going on up until the last 100 pages or so and we finally got the big plot twist/reveal. usually with freidas books i have my own theories about what’s is going on but this one i was completely in the dark. it made the twist at the end all the more impactful.

the mfc is a med student that is doing her overnight rotation in the hospitals psych ward. she is very anxious about having to stay there, especially when there is no cell service in case she were to need help. we get flashbacks of her younger self that show a relationship she had with one her best friends that went wrong. through those flashbacks we start to understand why she has that anxiety.

i do want to preface that this does take place is a psych ward, so be mindful that’s there are depictions of mental illness in this book.

this was easily 5 stars for me! i devoured this book and it has quickly rose to the top of my ranks for favorite thrillers! if you love some unexpected plot twists or are just a fan of freida definitely pick this up for your next read!
