I am so excited and this made me even more excited! I have already nearly finished the full book and yes!!
To be honest, I could not get into the book. It felt slow and boring. Once I understood the style of writing with this book, for example there are no " " when the character is speaking, it felt better and more natural. The more I read it the more interesting it got . I am really enjoying these characters and the story. I will write another review or maybe update this one when I get to read whole book. I plan to buy it. Sally Rooney is a great autor and I have read every book by her so far. But it's been a long time. Let's see how this one compares to the others.
Requesting this sampler, I had a feeling I would adore the snippet I got of Sally Rooney's new book, Intermezzo. This sample is a reminder of the love I have for her work and how incredible she is at creating unique yet lifelike characters. Like the other books she has written, Sally Rooney writes character driven books that show the insight and depth of a persons emotion and thoughts, Intermezzo does exactly this. In this snippet I fell in-love with Ivan's character who is a little different from the norm and perhaps began to dislike his brother Peter, just a little. Sally Rooney creates characters like no other, Intermezzo is another example of this. I can't wait to continue reading this book! Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this sampler.
When I saw the title and the author I was so excited that I requested it instantly without realising that it was a sampler.
I feel that I am not qualified to give an appreciationt, either positive or negative.
I was already familiar with the author's style, and I can't say that it is any different here. As for the story and its characters, I can hardly get an idea.
With thanks to the author, publishers Faber and Faber Ltd, and NetGalley for providing me with a sample eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fantastically readable two-chapter sample of what promises to be an enthralling story. I've not read any Sally Rooney before, but I really like her writing style based on this short exposure to it, and will certainly be picking up the full book upon publication to find out what happens to Peter and Ivan and hopefully flesh out this review a little more!
Intermezzo (sampler) by Sally Rooney
Peter and Ivan, brothers born 10 years apart, have recently lost their father. In these first chapters we are introduced to Peter, a Dublin lawyer then Ivan, a chess champion.
I was a bit concerned about what Sally Rooney would write next but I needn't have worried - this has her trademark unique writing style and way of describing people and events. And so far I think I'm going to enjoy it even more than her previous books. I'd pre-ordered this book for publication day and forgotten about it - what a lovely surprise when it arrived! Very VERY highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a sample of this book.
A great sampler, looking forward to reading the whole thing!
In Sally Rooney we trust.
4 stars to Intermezzo.
This is the book that has really cemented Sally Rooney as a new modern powerhouse of literary fiction. She delved so deep into these characters I could almost feel their breath on my face as I read about their lives. The constant battle of brotherhood is displayed so perfect it felt as though she was reaching into my mind and describing me and my own brother.
I’ve always been a massive fan of Sally Rooney, but this is definitely my new favourite and I can’t wait to read the entirety!
Happy publication day to one more book by Sally Rooney! I was so happy to get the sampler! I cannot wait to read the whole story. I could not put the book down until I finished all pages. Look forward to getting to know the characters better, they seem so different despite being brothers, so I am very curious to see how their lives unfold. I am giving 5 stars to the sampler, but I am not sure whether it will be 5 or less for the book overall (hope it will be a 5 star one!)
I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with the arc sample for review
Loved reading this sample and looking forward to reading the book. I always love Sally Rooney's stories. So engaging and never dissapoint.
anything sally rooney writes i will eat up, i love her work and feel like i have been waiting forever for a new book
I really loved the sampler I was given! Im looking forward to reading the rest of the book! There's much to say because it was only like 50 pages, but loved it anyways.
A really great sample! I will definitely be grabbing this soon, I tried waiting to read the sample until release so that I can just continue the physical copy where I finished these pages. Definitely one that I am looking forward to seeing the progression of the characters and seeing how they deal with their grief.
ARC Review 💚
Intermezzo (Sampler)
Happy Publishing week to Sally Rooney!
Intermezzo - meaning a light dramatic, musical, or other performance inserted between the acts of a play. Interesting fits so well for the story of Peter and Ivan following the death of their father.
Whilst the content of Sally Rooney’s books can never be described as light per se , this has all the quietly written human melodrama we’ve come to expect from her. The writing is skilfully crafted, you can tell each word has a reason it’s there and why. My only criticism would be that the beginning of the novel, reads kind of like it begins in the middle of a sentence, which for me threw me a bit.
This book moves away from some of her previous works in terms of being a more personalised character study of each brother, their relationships and thoughts on eachother.
I didn’t really get a sense of where the book was going next from the first chapters but I look forward to reading the rest to find out!
There is brief mention of autism and one of the characters being autistic - I look forward to whether this is mentioned further and the type of representation we see in the writing.
Thank you to @netgalley, @faberandfaber and Sally Rooney for an advanced copy of the first chapters of this book before its release date in exchange for my honest thoughts.

The two chapters in this extract feature two bothers - one in each chapter and Rooney employs a different writing style for each.
Really enjoyed this extract and looking forward to reading the full text.
10/10. just purchased the book and this one will probably be my fav of salls <333 thanky ou netgaley for this sampler!
Great sample thank you. This book has just been released and I bought my copy yesterday. I’m sure this will be another hit for Sally.
Sally Rooney has done it again. This author has the most exquisite way of descriptive writing and really sets the tone. I don’t know how to explain it other than it itches the brain. I will never get over how amazing the writing is when it comes to interpersonal connections and actually contemplating the words you’ve just read, making you really think, absorb and learn from those words.
This time we follow the story of two brothers, opposites in character and face handling their grief of their father.
The monotonous of every day, when life and time moves on regardless whether you’re ready to or not. Retrospective thinking and the intangible aspect of their lives.
We get the inside scoop of each character, poised into place, Rooney really sets the scene, allowing to really see through the characters eyes and hits you like a wave of deeper meaning.
Starting off with Peter, the apparent older brother who seems to have their life together as a lawyer yet seems to have his head stuck between two women, merging them almost. Why grieve when he can surround himself in women and work.
Ivan is an awkward young adult, who clearly isn’t sure on what he’s meant to be doing, he questions everything but also cares deeply. He’s fearful of regret or doing something wrong. I really enjoyed his internal thought process and how raw and vulnerable his thinking was.
We wade on through the complex dynamics of the family relationships as well as where love and lust comes into play, I can really see it has been set up nicely for true character development with the underlying theme of navigating your way through life when grieving.
I really enjoyed the chance to read this as an arc, I can’t wait to see how it ends and how each of the brothers stories progress.
Thank you kindly to NetGalley and Faber Books for the chance to read and review this sampler arc.
4 stars for now!
Normal People is one of my all time favourite books and I fear if this book keeps going on how it did in the sampler, it might be a strong contender!
