I love Lower Decks and Ryan North seemed like the perfect match for a book like this, so of course I had to check it out. Most importantly, the art and character voices are exactly on target, you can practically hear the voice actors in your head while you read. Unfortunately I think that eBook is not the right format to read a graphic novel like this. The choose your own adventure aspect means that you have to flip back and forth a lot to get the full effect of the story, and that quickly becomes tedious on a eReader or computer. I got through enough to know that the book is great and that I will definitely be acquiring a physical copy as soon as possible so that I can read through the entire thing. Highly recommended for fans of Star Trek, but if possible read it in physical form.

It's a normal morning for Beckett Mariner—until it isn't. Things have gone weird aboard the USS Cerritos. Boimler has adopted a pregnant tribble... or Khan is back... or the Borg are invading. It depends on which path you, the reader, choose. But whichever direction you go, one thing stays the same: everyone seems to think Beckett knows the ship's highly confidential prefix code. Which, as she states time and again, she doesn't.
Wait, "time and again"?... That's right. It doesn't take long to find out that, whatever is happening, it keeps happening. Someone is very intent on getting this code. And to break the cycle, you're going to have to do some seriously out of the box thinking.
It's been great to see "interactive novels" making a comeback recently, and this is the first interactive comic I've read personally. Going with Lower Decks was a great choice for a title like this, where the bendiness and genre-savvy actually come in handy. How quickly you find your way out of the cycle will be largely down to chance; for me it took a while, but even then I didn't catch all the potential plot lines. This is one you'll want to cheat your way through when you're finished, just to see what you missed. It's a heck of a lot of fun, and a great way of embracing this classic choose-your-own-adventure style.

I didn't get through every single permutation of this choose-your-own-adventure, but I did get through four, and died every time, lol.
Long-time Trek fan, although I haven't seen anything from Lower Decks because I don't have the right streaming platform. It sounds great though-- a little bit like The Orville maybe. If this GN's portrayal of a less rigid, more irreverent tone is accurate, it's probably awesome.
It looks like the characters from the show are the main characters in this GN, so readers who have seen at least a little might get more out of it, but it's not a requirement. From the storylines I did follow and those I caught glimpses of in between, it looks like there are plenty of references to original Star Trek storylines and characters, from TOS to DS9 and some of the movies.
The illustration style was a great match for the zany storylines. It looks like it matches the show's cartoon style pretty closely, too.

Such a fun chose your own adventure story but boy howdy is it difficult to read digitally! Something best suited for fans of startrek and physical media!

I received a copy of Star Trek Lower Decks Warp Your Own Way published by @idwpublishing from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That's a mouthful.
I really like the TV show and I thought this captured the vibe of the show very well. They nailed the artwork and did a great job with the characters. I enjoyed the story, though I died many times along the way, which just means I got to see the whole thing lol
I would, however, not recommend reading the digital version, unless you've got a very good reader. It's a choose your own adventure and turning to the appropriate page was difficult for me. I'd go to the page number on the reader but it would be the wrong one in the actual book. It made reading difficult to do. I think this would work great in physical format, hopefully by the time of publication they've fixed the digital.

It could have been such a good graphic.
I'm not a big fan of book that doesn't follow standard narrative trends . Sometimes it's works well but I don't feel that is the case for this one.
When I was asked to choose a page I did and it felt like it wasn't a good continuity, so I choose the other one and it wasn't better .
It happened once or twice but it as still bothered me. It break my rhythm and I don't like that.
I think that there is an actual graphic about Star Trek : Lower Decks so I might read that one .
I will try again (I think) I found those type of book interesting even if I rarely like it . I will have to take note next time
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

On the one hand, I loved this choose your own adventure comic. It really had the feel of the series (like the previous TPB), and, it was hilarious at times, and made me face palm at times.
And, I really look forward to reading it again in physical form, because, reading it in the eBook form was just very painful. The page numbers were off, and, so it felt more like a Waldo Seek and Find book (gotta find the page, gotta find the page) then a fully traditional CYOA book. But, on the other hand, I am most definitely going to seek out the final product in physical form (hopefully if my library doesn't buy it, one in the area will) and read it again, hopefully with fewer page numbering issues.

I did not expect a "find your own adventure" style story. But that's what I got. And slowly the reasoning behind it appeared. I don't want to ruin anything, so that's all I'm saying about it. The story was in turns funny and terrifying. The confusion lifts and it all makes sense. Eventually. This was well done. I immensely enjoyed myself.

Thank you NetGalley and IDW Publishing for this early review copy.
This book was so fun to read. I used to love choose your own adventure books when I was kid. Mix that with Lower Decks, there was no way you could go wrong with it. So much fun!

Firstly, a big thank you to Ryan North, the author, the art team, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this graphic novel/choose-your-own-adventure story based in the Star Trek: Lower Decks universe, told from the perspective of one of the main characters, Mariner. Loving both Star Trek and choose-your-own-adventure stories, I knew this would be a fun time. I was right! I will post my revew to Goodreads, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble upon release.
Each morning when Mariner wakes up, her choice of morning caffeine thrusts her into a different string of events and side quests. You're presented with lots of choices that reminded me of video game options more than choose-your-own-adventure, but I still really liked the format. The stories themselves were a bit confusing at times and I got lost a little lost but maybe that was because I was reading the stories back to back. The book is short and sweet and reminds me of an episode of Lower Decks, with a time warp storyline. The humor felt very similar to the show, as well as the plotting and art. I thought the CYOA aspect brought something interactive to the story that made it more interesting!
There's even some cool character design extras at the end to show how they were animated. I am always fascinated by these types of breakdowns!
People who enjoy the show, funny comics, and graphic novels that have a choose-your-own-adventure element will enjoy this one.

Lower Decks: Warp Your Own Way is a choose your own adventure book following Mariner through her day, which always starts with her choice of caffeine in the morning. The scenarios diverge wildly into the most extreme situations, always ending quite badly.
The characters feel entirely like they do in the show, and the scenarios are inventive and fun. What was odd however is that finding out exactly what is happening requires flipping through to find hidden pages that lead to the ultimate resolution.

Like books where you have to follow directions or the story makes no sense! Like stories with multiple endings depending on what decisions you make for the main character. In this story, you are giving choose that will either advanced you in the story or end in your death. I did not read every ending. Fun for people who like making choose for the main character and having a unique read every time.

CURRENT REVIEW - Currently, not published anywhere but here.
"Star Trek: Lower Decks―Warp Your Own Way" is a disappointing and far from successful attempt to combine the comic brilliance of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" with the much loved story telling of the "Choose Your Own Adventures" (CYOA) books. Certainly, the book captures the frenetic energy, unbridled bravery and zany iconoclasm that the main character, Ens. Beckett Mariner, is known for. However, the magic and wonder of the the CYOA books is almost completely missing from this book.
Whereas, the original CYOA books are distinguished for having multiple storylines with highly divergent and often conflicting endings. In this book all but one of the endings are variants on the same theme. Although clues to the real mystery behind the story do emerge at the end of some story lines, the lack of varying endings is disappointing and makes this book a far less enticing read than it should be. The one ending that does differ significantly is also an underwhelming and unfulfilling let down.
Additional problems are caused by some of the content of this book. Thus, there is disturbing imagery of large piles of bodies and references to unsanctioned medical experiments that are reminiscent of the death camps of the Second World War. Various "Star Trek" series, have of course dealt with such themes in the past. However, these elements are thrown about lightly and without any real resolution in the end. As such. They are not only disturbing but out of place in what seems to have been intended as a light hearted YA appropriate book.
Although, much of the content of the book is well done, the choice of narrative structures, a number of unexplained details and the inclusion of disturbing elements makes this book a hard read for the youngest of readers and anyone bothered by the whitewashing of atrocities.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, IDW Publishing, for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my commitment to provide an honest review.
I have read and evaluated this book. I will publish a review and a rating on Goodreads once it is clear that the book is in its final form.
NOTE to The Publisher:
In addition to the concerns noted above, the version of the book I received for review IS NOT ready for publication.
1) There are several missing dialogues. Notably, in the Dionysius story line.
2) Additionally, pages 38 and 82 are orphaned (Please note, I have used the book's internal pagination and not that of the PDF.) That is, there are no page references in the book which lead to these pages. Thus there is currently no way to get to the "final" resolution.
I was able to find these pages by applying some basic debugging skills. However, many readers do not have experience with debugging and most familiar with CYOA books will expect a set of randomized endings and not a progressing sequence of dead ends that eventually coalesce into a single ending for the entire book.
In case you doubt my analysis, you may want to look at the other reviews. Very few indicate anything more than that the reviewer has gone down a few routes that eventually ended in death in destruction. There are also few, perhaps no references, to any developments that take place in any storyline that diverges after the jumping of points on page 38.
I really wish I could have written a nicer review and provided you with better feedback , but I feel compelled to be honest. Although really promising, the current version of this book falls far short of expectations. I hope you can fix it. My current star rating is 3, but I hope this can be raised based on the version that is published.

I was so excited to see this available on netgalley! The nostalgic feeling of warping my own way combined with my love of star trek? It's perfect. I really just had a great time reading this! I'll recommend it to my patrons that really know how to live long and prosper.

I'm absolutely fucking GIDDY writing this review.
I love Star Trek, I love lower decks, and guess what, I love the old format for choose your own adventure type books.
I found an author named Mark Tullius recently that does choose your own adventure for horror, so it got me thinking what else is there?
And I found this gem.
I can't wait to see more from this format, I cannot get ebough of this crew haha.
If you love any of this, check this out seriously.

I had so much fun reading this comic book. I love Lower Decks. I recently finished the 4th season, and this was exactly what I needed while waiting for the next one.
Like the title suggests, it's a choose your own adventure type of story, and it works so well in this setting. Beckett is the main hero, and it works really well; she's always so unpredictable, so choosing for her is really fun. She encounters a few well-known Star Trek characters; we have a Tribble problem; there is a Borg attack; and even Khan "somehow returned" (loved this reference). But don't worry, it all makes sense (well, in Star Trek style).
And if you're not a Star Trek fan, you can still enjoy reading this.

You're Mariner, hungover and forced out of bed early before your shift, what will you do?
For starters, I'm a huge fan of the series so I was super excited to pick this up. The characterisation is on point, everyone's favourite crew members are present and the Choose Your Own Adventure format works so well for the typical Lower Decks hijinks. I highly recommend this for any fans of the show, especially with the last season incoming, this books gives me hope for the future of the franchise!
Thanks to IDW Publishing & Netgalley for the arc!

I received an ARC of this comic in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and IDW Publishing for this opportunity.
Star Trek Lower Decks - Warp Your Own Way had many different choose your own adventures inside. I enjoyed a fair few of them, even if some of them felt like they dragged a little. Having to find the secret stories within the pages without the choose your own adventure guide was very Mariner, but as a reader, while it was fun, it also felt like kind of a cop out as every choose your own adventure path leads to either death or destruction.
I have been a massive fan of the Star Trek franchise for as long as I can remember, and this comic was a decent way to pass time, even if I felt some stories read a little out of character for Mariner.

I LOVED reading this! It feels exactly like an episode of the show, I could hear the voice actors reading the dialogue in my head. I already got through two endings, but I’m excited to keep rereading and finding new paths for the story. I can’t wait to get a physical copy of this book!
