Wonderful rendition of A Study in Scarlet!

I struggle reading Manga because it takes me a moment to adjust to reading the opposite direction of what I'm used to but I enjoyed this rendition of Sherlock Holmes' book, "A Study in Scarlet". The art is done well and the story is true Sherlock Holmes! A delightful mystery and it was fun to tag along with Sherlock and Watson as they solved the case. The suspense was perfect. The illustrations were eye-catching and pulled me into the story.

Likes/dislikes: I love the artwork! This is a manga that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm impressed with this rendition of "A Study in Scarlet"!
Mature content: PG-13 for smoking.
Language: PG for 2 swears, no f-words.
Violence: PG for off page death.
Ethnicity: White.

Ehh... I really wanted to like it. I love Sherlock Holmes after all. However, while it wasn't that bad, I mean, the pace was fine, the story... it is Sherlock Holmes... but the artstyle... it was just bad. It looks fine on the cover but on the inside it looks like a fan-made comic. And not a good one.

I would have given a higher rating but since it is a comic book the artstyle is a big thing for me and it just wasn't it.

I'd like to send my thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for providing a free pdf version of this comic book in exchange for an honest review.

I love this adaption of Sherlock Holmes. This manga edition of Sherlock gives a full color adventure of A Study in Scarlet. It is a lovely adaption and the fashions are dynamic and the characters are quite playfully rendered.

This manga is so cool! It is very true to the Sherlock Holmes books, with a fun twist. It is really neat to see old tales re-imagined with art like this. The art style really adds to the mysteries.

I have been a Sherlock fan since I was a little girl. My grandma encouraged me to read and I just adored the stories of Sherlock Holmes and Mrs. Hudson, John Watson, and many more. 221B Baker Street will forever feel like home to me. This manga retelling brought me back to those days as a kid and I was drawn back in to a story I’ve read and watched dozens of times. It never fails to amaze me how timeless Sherlock is, no matter the format. I would highly recommend this version because the art is incredible. Sherlock gets a Howl makeover and it suits him well. I loved the young, vibrant, and slightly naive Watson here as well. I can’t wait to read more in this collection. Thank you NetGalley and Udon Entertainment for this ARC. First a big thank you to NetGalley, the Author and the Publisher for this ARC.

Let me just say that I never read the Original "A Study in Scarlet" simply because it's not my thing.
Now, I do want to read classics like "A Study in Scarlet" and found that the manga adaptions are an easy way into classical literature.
‘A Study in Scarlet’ is the first of the Sherlock Holmes novels, I like this book for the way it introduced the characters of Holmes and Watson to its readers. Without feeling too much like an ‘origin story’, it still offered us a well-rounded insight of the two characters such that we get a handle of their personalities before the actual case begins.
The illustrations serve the story well. The actions and the emotions are spot on. Manga Sherlock certainly looks hot, but he doesn’t look “Sherlock-y’. Sherlock is supposed to be about 26-27 in the first book, so he does look his age. But John Watson looks way too young and not like an experienced army doctor straight out from Afghanistan.
For some reason, I got this feeling that Sherlock and John were being set up as a potential romantic pair in the artwork. Which I would totally "ship", but I don't think that that would be true to the original.
This was an overall enjoyable read.

I know it sounds a bit silly, but it feels like "Patriot Moriarty" and 2010 BBC Sherlock had a child who love k-dramas. Manga adaptation is incredibly great idea of engaging young audience in reading classics (not that stories about Sherlock were in big need of that but overall I give kudos to person who came up with the idea)

Had a blast reading this classic in Manga form with such stunning artwork. This will definitely be the only way I'll be consuming my classics from now on, thank you.

Sherlock Holmes is on the case

ARC review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I picked this up because I enjoy a good Sherlock Holmes interpretation and it most definitely has the correct vibes. The art is a fun style, perhaps a bit of homage to the classic tale. Watson looked younger than I'd expect and I'm not sure it fit quite right.

This can be a hard balance telling a new story with well known characters and I think it went pretty well. It's a good start.

Thank you Netgalley and Udon Entertainment for this eARC.

—Brief Summary-

True to a Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson story, they meet and together help the police solve murder mysteries.

I find this to be an easily digestible read and visually appealing adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s first Sherlock Holmes novel. I’d recommend this to fans of the classic novel or those interested in reading it in an easier format.

Thank you to Udon Entertainment for providing me with this book for review via NetGalley!

The story is the same, the characters are the same as the original still, this manga version is lovely, attractive and pulls the reader into the atmosphere of this first Holmes’ story. The manga hits the classic lines and turning points of the story.

A+

First time I've red Manga, and this was a good one to start with. The beginning gave instructions on how to read the book, since it is different than Western books. As for the story itself, it was enjoyable. No different than the original story, but I enjoyed the art style.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!

Entertaining read. Loved seeing Sherlock and Watson’s friendship develop. The art looks great and I love that it’s fully in color. I also appreciated how it was longer than most manga I’ve read.

Interesting idea to have a manga adaptation of the story. I quite enjoyed it, however the art was not my favorite. Mainly some of the facial expressions. But other than that it was very interesting to follow!

I read the original A Study in Scarlet a long time ago, so I was looking forward to have my memory refreshed. I am also not new to reading graphic novel adaptations of classics (I’m a fan!) but this was the first time I read one that was adapted into manga! I was pretty excited about it.

My first reaction was how young and handsome both Watson and Sherlock were. It quite took me by surprise. I did like the manga expressions, but I’m not so sure about these two being too handsome. There’s a first for everything, I suppose.

I still think that if you want to know the best version of Sherlock, you should read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original works. But I feel like the manga did some justice to the originals. The Sherlock that most people are familiar with are probably more like the snooty Benedict Cumberbatch version who even made fun of Watson. Doyle’s version, I felt was at least respectful to Watson. He trusted Watson and his friend’s profession enough to rely on him.

But if you want a quick taste of what the story was about, you could give this manga classics a try. Reading both to compare is always the best, I feel.

I rated this 3.5 stars.

The mystery started off not very interesting, but the backstory changed my view on it a lot. I feel so bad for the killer, which isn't something I can say often. Sherlock is cool and Watson is adorable. I love the art.

The Manga Classics adaptation of Sherlock Holmes is a masterpiece that brilliantly captures the essence of literature’s most iconic detective. Illustrated by Julien Choy and staying true to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original work, this graphic novel immerses readers in Holmes’ genius through Dr. Watson’s perspective.

The artwork is stunning—every detail, from Victorian-era attire to intricate settings, is meticulously crafted. The use of color and visual effects, such as blurs in memory sequences, adds incredible depth to the story. Holmes remains his eccentric yet utterly captivating self, while Watson offers a grounded and relatable viewpoint.

This manga is not only easy to read but so engaging that it’s impossible to put down. A flawless adaptation that deserves a 5-star rating. An absolute must-have for any Sherlock Holmes fan!

📌 A must-read because:
✔ Classic story with a fresh visual twist
✔ Faithful and detailed illustrations
✔ Fast-paced and immersive storytelling

A Study In Scarlet is one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes's story. It's so nice to be able to read it in manga style. The artwork somehow reminds me of the BBC's Sherlock rather than the original Sherlock Holmes. The characters esp. Holmes & Watson look too young in this manga. I wish they could be portrayed a little bit older/mature. Nevertheless, it's a good option to enjoy Sherlock Holmes classic story.

Solid adaptation of A Study in Scarlet. The character designs are appealing, but the artwork, overall, feels a bit static for manga. Still, mystery lovers will enjoy.
