4.5 🌟rounded up

I went into 'The Guilty One' completely blind because hey, it's KMOD—she's one of those authors I trust to take me on a wild ride. And wow, it did not disappoint! Modglin does what she does best: keeps you guessing, keeps you hooked, and doesn't shy away from going full throttle into the twisty-turny, 'Wait, what just happened?' territory.

This book kicks off with a great hook that had me invested from the beginning. The dual POVs of husband and wife, Tate and Celine, unraveling the truth about Tate’s “accident,” was such a great angle. I loved how the suspense built—what starts as one reveal only gets more intense as you go. It’s the kind of book where you think you know what’s up, but nope, Modglin keeps pulling the rug out from under you.

I can't wrap this up without giving some major kudos to the narrators—they brought this audiobook to life. I loved the whole cast; they nailed it and made the story even more gripping.

So if you’re looking for a quick listen that doesn’t mess around with the slow burn. 'The Guilty One' should be added to your list. Modglin has once again proven why I keep coming back for more of her books—ballsy twists, fast-paced storytelling, and an ending that just slaps. I always appreciate that Modglin goes there.

It’s a yes for me!!🖤

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and Dream Scape Media for this audio book ARC opportunity!

I’ve been a long time reader of Kiersten Modglin, and I must say this feels like a classic K-Mod book in the best way. It was surprising, entertaining, with several twists worked in, and a grand finale I didn’t see coming.

The narrator was expressive, entertaining, and enjoyable to listen to.

As said above, K-Mod went back to her roots in this story- I was interested right from the start. I found this to be a more unique story line, and I liked the main character. I was truly surprised by the ending.

I look forward to reading more from this author!

This book is so good! My mind was blown and I audibly gasped several times. What a wild and wonderful ride. I have read several of Kiersten Modglin's books and I do believe this is the best one yet!
The narrators were excellent. Thank you for the opportunity to listen to this book!

Alternating chapters with different narrators made this an easy-to-follow and enjoyable audiobook thriller. While some parts of the action were easy to guess, the reveals at the end surprised me in a good way.
It’s a story about a family man who disappears, and people from his past who turn up dead. His wife in search of the man she married, and a supporting cast of kids and parents, cops and co-workers. The action kept the plot moving. Even though I had seen similar storylines on TV shows recently, this held my interest and was a compelling and well-narrated audiobook.
My thanks to the author, publisher, producer, and #NetGalley for early access to the audiobook for review purposes. Pre-order now: publishing Sept. 3, 2024.

This was a great book, it really kept my attention the whole way through. It was interesting the "bad" guy was one of the points of view.

Twists and turns! Captured my attention right away and held it throughout. A dark, suspenseful quick read or audiobook that doesn’t disappoint. Audiobook is narrated beautifully and captures the darkness, suspense, characters, and plot nicely. This was my first Kiersten Modglin book and I’m keen to explore more!

Trigger warning: SA, mention of CA

Wow! This audiobook delivers on a fast paced thriller/ mystery with amazing plot twists and turns! The first chapter starts off fast and furious and just never lets up! Dual timelines with multiple POV narrated by 3 narrators will keep you engaged and will make this audiobook impossible to pause, let alone stop. Just when you think you have the mystery solved, think again! I guarantee this is one story you will be shocked by!

Thank you Net Galley and Dreamscape for the ARC of The Guilty One!

The Guilty One was a book I wasn't sure I would end up rating highly based on the beginning, but once I got through the first couple of chapters I became invested in the story. I liked the fact that the different narrators were voiced by different performers and it helped me really get lost in the story. I thought this was going to be your basic domestic thriller until the last few chapters, good, but not great. However, the multiple twists at the end legitimately surprised me which is so rare for me with books these days. If you like thrillers and multiple narrator audiobooks, I highly recommend The Guilty One.

Oh my! This was a crazy ride :) This book is shorter than many in this genre, but packs a good punch with twists! Husband disappears, first thought to be dead then psyche! Nope, not his body in the car. A whole can of worms opens up. Not a lot of depth, just very paced mystery. I really liked it and recommend it for a quick escape. Narration was on point.

I'm a bit biased because I do love everything that Kiersten Modglin writes so I go in thinking that I'm probably going to love it and look past some of the inconsistencies. This was not my favorite by her but I still really enjoyed it. I think that there could have been a little bit more development of Tate and his foster brothers while they were at their foster homes to really bring home how drastic his transformation was. I did enjoy the review at the end and thought that was really clever and unexpected. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

What a great book! Fast-paced, multiple POV and plenty of twists along the way. After her husband, Tate, is in a car accident, police contact Celine to identify his body, but it's not her husband! Then the rollercoaster ride begins...and it's a wild ride!

I loved all the secrets from Tate's college days and Celine's determination to find the truth. Highly recommend!!!

This was quite a good read!! Celine gets a call no spouse ever wants to hear. Her husband has been in a car accident and has been killed. She has to go identify the body and she immediately recognizes his tattoo…but is it really him? She doesn’t think so but the police are not convinced. What follows is a suspenseful dive into her husband past , the friends he hung out with, and Celine trying to get to the truth. For her and for her kids!

I very much enjoyed this audiobook. I listened in one sitting. I feel that the author did a great job at building the suspense in so many ways. From the moment Celine has to identify the body, to the moment she finds out the bombshell news of what actually happened, K Mod just has a way to reel you in and not let you go until the twist has your mouth on the floor. This is one of her favorite books I have read.

Thank you so much to Kiersten, Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for this Advanced readers edition Audiobook.

I couldn’t predict the ending!

Celine Thompson's day starts with the police telling her that her husband is dead. When she arrives at the station to identify his body, she learns that the victim was not her husband, and somehow, her day still gets worse from there.

I absolutely loved this one. I started it this morning on my dog walk and ended up walking for almost two hours just listening without ever pausing. I listened at home while I did my laundry, I listened at work while I knocked out some of my tasks. Absolutely could not put it down until I finished.

Right from the start, Celine is a very likable character. She's an ordinary person thrown into an awful, life shattering situation and she reacts in very normal, believable ways. Next, all of the secondary characters (there are last eleven other important characters) are fleshed out in a way that makes it extremely easy to keep them straight and understand why they act the way they do. I usually find it difficult to keep characters straight when there's that many of them, but this was done beautifully I had zero issues. The pacing of the book is really good, it jumps right in and keeps your attention the entire time. The plot is complex and has several twists, but it never becomes convoluted. The end wraps things up really nicely. Honestly just a super solid book the entire way through, possibly my favorite KM book and I've read probably 80% of them. 10/10, 5 stars!

The ONLY tiny bit of turn off for me was a scene or two that was pretty graphic and gross. I'm not a 'this book needs a trigger warning' person I have a pretty high tolerance but the scene towards the end was a bit prolonged and had my stomach turning. Had it not stopped when it did I might have had to turn it off. So if you're sensitive about sexual assault you should probably pass on this one.

The Guilty One

Wow wow wow!
Finished another book by the thriller queen herself! Completely blown away with this story!

Celine and Tate seem to have the perfect family and life to the outside world.
Almost. One morning, everything comes crashing down. Answers come with more questions and no one can be trusted.

Buckle in and be ready for some twists and turns, Kiersten Modglin style!

The Guilty One is just one twist after another! There was so much drama packed into such a relatively short story that I binge listened to this in a day. It was also extremely dark at times (TW for SA). I did eventually figure out what was really going on with Tate and while that was definitely a twist, it wasn’t the last twist of the book! The author saved that for the very last pages and I wasn’t expecting it! Props to the audiobook narrator who read with such passion!
