Thanks to Netgalley and Tor Books for the extended excerpt of Brandon Sanderson's upcoming installment of the Stormlight Archive, Wind and Truth. Below is my honest review.

Thank goodness I read this super slow, because I finished it only a few days before the book's official release and I absolutely do not want to wait for more. I can handle being patient for a day or two to get my hands on the full book.

Sanderson has definitely defied my expectations in where I thought the story was going, at least for the excerpt, so I'm even more excited to keep going. BRING ON THE RELEASE!

Thanks so much Tor for the early sneak peek!

Definitely recommend this series, as it's my absolute favorite of all time, but it's really not wise to jump in on book five. Buy yourself the whole series and dive in immediately!!!

Note: This review contains spoilers for The Stormlight Archives up to Rhythm of War. It does not contain any spoilers for Wind and Truth.

It’s considered a great feat when a trilogy of books is consistently good from book 1 through 3. Too often do plots become convoluted, feel too dragged out or rushed. Characters may backtrack their growth to create easy conflict, romances are strung out, constantly breaking and reforming. A trilogy that manages to avoid these trappings is extremely impressive. So when Sanderson does this with a five book arc, it becomes legendary.

Sanderson is no stranger to long series, having finished the Wheel of Time saga after the tragic passing of Robert Jordan. But finishing an established series with established characters, lore and plots is much different than creating a world from scratch. So, when Sanderson set out writing Way of Kings, he knew he had a daunting task ahead of him. After over a decade in development, and success in his novels Elantris, Warbreaker and his Mistborn series, he finally released Way of Kings in 2010. It was immediately clear that this was the start of something truly spectacular, and every subsequent entry in the series only furthered the promise of the first book. Now, 14 years later, the final book in the first arc of his magnum opus is being released. At time of writing, I have only only read an extended excerpt. However, I’m delighted to say what I have read has been consistent with, if not better than his previous works.

When it comes to installments this deep into a series, the major pitfalls I see are convoluted plot points and a degradation of characters. Sanderson masterfully avoids both, Wind and Truth picking up where the already fantastic Rhythm of War leaves off. The ten day countdown adds a wonderful tension to the book, making every action and moment feel vastly more important. The characters feel grown and complex, magnitudes different than how we met them in Way of Kings but still familiar. Growth they went through is not only kept, but highlighted as each character takes what they have learned and acts accordingly to their experiences. That seems like a given, but I’ve seen far too many series double back time and time again, having a character act in a manner that makes no sense after the events of a previous book.

The plot stays tight and exciting, adding new wrinkles while never feeling bloated or directionless. This is especially impressive due to The Stormlight Archives being a sort of nexus point for the entire Cosmere, Sanderson’s massive shared universe. Readers can absolutely follow and enjoy the story having only read the previous 4 books, but fans of the Cosmere are treated to an ever deepening web of connections, with characters, items and powers from other book showing up throughout the background. Odium, the antagonist of the series, poses a threat not only to Roshar, the planet where the series takes place, but the entire Cosmere. So plenty of other parties are pulling strings and enacting plots, making this book feel like the nexus event for the Cosmere. For those in the know, it makes everything feel that much more impactful and important, as if you were witness history in real time.

All of this culminates into a book that is a blast to read. Every point of view, every interlude, every page is captivating and engaging. I found myself reading for hours when I only planned to read for a few minutes. This series doesn’t feel like a classic in the making, it feels like a classic that already has secured a spot as one of the greatest fantasy sagas of all time. And this is just arc 1…

Thank you to Tor and NetGalley for providing an extended excerpt of this book.

I received an ARC of an extended excerpt, which includes the first 300 pages of the book. While I already knew I loved this series, this book seems to be no exception. I was immediately drawn in by the first chapter, and Brandon Sanderson once again does not disappoint with his writing so far! I found myself laughing, awwing, and gasping all within the first 50 pages.

I can’t wait for the rest of the book to be released on December 6th!

I feel like as a publisher you already know. As a reader, I am comforted in the knowledge I only have to wait a few more days to finish this. Thank you for the chance to get ahead of my husband in our battle to finish first.

This was just a 300-page sampling of what’s to come, but it has me so excited to read the full book and finish out this arc of the Stormlight Archives. Excellent worldbuilding, excellent characters, and excellent foreshadowing, as always.

Anyone who is a fantasy lover or who is looking for an outstanding epic fantasy series needs to check out the Stormlight Archives. I cannot wait to see what surprises Brandon has in store for us.

Brilliant as always.

It did feel a little weird at the beginning with Kaladin not being super duper depressy but it evened out. I can’t wait to see what happens after the end of the extended preview!

I enjoyed this so much. Though I can't believe it stopped when it did! I can't wait to read the rest!

I CANNOT WAIT for the rest of this book. This excerpt has me stoked. I audibly gasped just from reading the cosmere connections from the prologue alone.

Brandon Sanderson is a master worldbuilder and storyteller, and this is shaping out to be one of my all-time favorite series. It's hard to dive in without getting into spoilers but the first few parts of Wind and Truth are dripping with emotion and epic-ness. It feels fantastic to be back in this fully fleshed out world with these fully fleshed out, complex characters. Dec.6/2024 cannot come soon enough.

If you haven't picked up the Stormlight Archives yet, PLEASE pick it up. You will not regret it.

Journey before destination.

A HUGE thank you Tor books and Net Galley, I'm counting down the days until I can get my hands on the rest of this book.

Fun to get a preview, I’m excited for this to come out Friday! This is the final book in the first half of the Stormlight archives, and this arc was an excerpt.

This preview covers the first two days before the contest between Odium and Dalinar. Being a Sanderson novel, there were multiple points of view (Shallan, Kal, Dalinar, Szeth, Navani, etc.) and time seemed oddly compressed (two days goes on for 300+ pages). I enjoyed the preview for the most part, but I must admit that the parts with Kal and Seth dragged. We do get some glimmers into Szeth's past (which honestly, I wanted more) and some hints as to why Shallan may be unique among the Radiants. I look forward to reading the book as a whole and finding out what truly happened to Honor; I have theories (as do most fans) but it appears we might finally get some answers in this book before the break.

Brandon Sanderson once again proves why he is the king of intricate multi-layered storytelling and world-building. We pick up with Dalinar's challenge with Odium, which couldn't make the stakes any higher, with the future of the entire Cosmere resting on this single contest. Every moment feels like a ticking clock, building hope and tension for the reader. Each of the series' beloved characters are on a quest to discover mysteries or find something within themselves. The writing balances these storylines while maintaining the clarity of the plot. The shifting perspectives permit the reader to access the story's scope and the character's intricate impact that propels the narrative forward. The creation of complex characters like Kaladin and his struggle with inner demons allows him to showcase growth and resilience across the series. Every character feels purposeful, and their interactions display emotional depth. While this book has a serious tone, great moments of wit and humor lighten the mood and serve as delightful banter to develop joy against some intense moments. I was drawn in from the first sentence and am yearning for more. I received an extended book excerpt. The publication date can not get here fast enough. A true masterpiece! Thank you, NetGalley and Tor Publishing.

Thank you so much to NetGalley, Tor Books, and Brandon Sanderson for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review of the extended excerpt for Wind and Truth!

I started my foray into Brandon Sanderson books in 2023, with the first three Mistborn books. I thought I had read fantasy books before but they left me wholly unprepared for the depth that comes with his books. This man will drop hints like they're crumbs and have you fighting for every last morsel of knowledge. You'll know bits and pieces of the story are important but you won't be sure how yet, and the further along you get in the story, the deeper the plot thickens, and suddenly up is down and down is up, and then BAM IT ALL CONNECTS!

After reading The Hero of Ages, I realized that when this man decides to end the first part of a series, it will be this fabulous crescendo of mayhem that somehow ends up being so extraordinarily perfect that you'll immediately want to read it again. Suffice it to say, I had really high hopes coming into this excerpt of Wind and Truth, and yet somehow this man still blew all my expectations out of the water. To keep this review spoiler free, here are random thoughts I shared on Goodreads completely out of context:

“Idk if I just didn’t put it together but page 6 has a reveal that already has me in awe of Brandon Sanderson’s genius. I feel like this was the ultimate sleight of hand. The man is a magician."

“Page 51 had me shrieking and Page 52 had me nearly in tears. I love Wit so much"

"YOU GO SHALLAN"

"Syl, I love you, never change😂😂"

"All of the shrieking just occurred. Oh my god."

"Oh."

"I am unconvinced that Brandon Sanderson is not in fact an offworlder. How in the world does he think of these things???"

"I am absolutely crashing out rn. What in the WORLDS"

"THERE IS NOT ENOUGH PANICKING ABOUT THIS SITUATION"

"Seriously, a jump scare????"

“WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW?!”

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I cannot wait to see what comes in the next 1000+ pages.

I will post the review above on Instagram on 11/27/24 and my full review on Goodreads once the book has released and I have finished it.

Ahhhhhhh

Thank you for approving this arc, but also, it’s such a tease because it’s only the first 25% of the book. So far, quite enjoying it - there are some things that sort of feel like they are being checked off a list of things to include (some conversations between characters) but at the same time, they are exactly needed. Szeth and Kaladin on a camping trip was something that I didn’t know I needed. Glad for the conversation between Renarin and Drehy because it needed to happen. I’m left on a cliff about Gavinor, but love the little friendship he has going with Lift.

Is it December 6 yet? I need people to talk about this with 😍😂

Sanderlanche right from the start. The excerpt has me at the edge of my seat biting my fingers afraid of what comes next while also perched, ready to run from the heaviness of what might come to be.

I’ve spent the past months rereading the entire cosmere and very few authors are able to command the attention of readers so masterfully.
Will Dalinar make it in time? Will Honor and Odium become the shard of War? What is Cultivation’s end game? Who of our favorites won’t make it past this book? So many questions, I can’t wait to sit at rapt attention to consume it all.
Brava!

I am so happy that I reread the first four Stormlight books before diving into Wind and Truth. This excerpt was everything I dreamed of and more. The action, the angst, the lore. Like every Brando Sando book, this has it all for me.

I absolutely cannot wait for 12/6/24. I've been officially counting down on my calendar since the cover reveal. I'm so glad WaT is coming out on a Friday because I plan on burying myself in the couch until it's finished. This feels like the releases of the last few Harry Potter books!

Thank you NetGalley and Tor Books for this free digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. I look forward to finishing the book and writing a more detailed review.

Brandon Sanderson never fails to create something truly spectacular. If you've made it this far in the stormlight archive... just know we are (as always) well taken care of as the reader. This is outstanding, I CANNOT wait to get my little gremlin hands on a physical copy of this book and annotate this book until the cows come home. Absolutely beyond words. I love it.

As a huge fan of Brandon Sanderson, and all things Stormlight Archive, I was so fortunate to be able to read this extended excerpt of the novel. I have been waiting what feels like a lifetime to have this book in my hands and having to wait even another week (which is what I will have to do as of today) is brutal haha!

It's hard to give a full review of this since it's an excerpt and not a full novel, but all I can say is that, based on what I have already read, there is nothing that will stand in the way of me and Wind and Truth on December 6. I am taking the day off work to read haha!

I have been a fan for years and the Cosmere never disappoints. I can't wait to get my hands on my own copies to devour the rest. A heartier review awaits until I get the physical book/complete audio. 5 stars, cheers!

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this book. I knew I didn't like Gavilar, so the way he's turning out is no surprise. At the moment I'm debating whether to reread the whole series before reading this 5th book, as I did each time a new Wheel of Time book came out. It might happen. I didn't feel too lost though in this excerpt, just aware that I probably missed some important details in the previous 4 books.
