Wow what addictive thriller this was. It was full of secrets, lies and deceit. I loved the writing style and how it was told from different perspectives it helped build up the suspense throughout.
Paige has just returned from travelling when at a family barbecue she hears a woman scream everyone says it’s nothing but Paige can feel in her gut that something isn’t right. When are best friend Jenna disappears the day the scream Paige, suspects that something has happened to her but nobody wants to listen. So Paige digs into Jenna past but maybe now Paige is in danger.
This was an excellent thriller which I can’t to recommend. I loved the many twists and turns especially with the nail biting ending which I did not see coming. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this fantastic book.
I felt 50/50 about the style of writing of this book, the numerous pov sometimes felt a little overwhelming but also some parts were needed but a lot was unnecessary background drama
The story was good, but I’d of liked more focus on jenna and her relationship like a before and after kind of situation as I felt there wasn’t much on her actual kidnapping. However it did seem more like the book was focused on Paige and her efforts to find jenna so I can understand why that wasn’t the case
Saturday morning ARC thanks to netgalley, bookouture and SD Robertson. Due to be published later this month - 30/09/2024.
Can't beat a psychological, suspense adventure! I thought it'd be a murder mystery but not quite. The slow burn builds up suspense with narration switching between characters where most have something to hide...and lose! It does keep you guessing throughout. I managed to work out the culprit just before Paige did but still enjoyed it all coming together for the big reveal.
Paige returns from a long stay in Australia to find that her best friend Jenna is in strange mood and then Jenna suddenly vanishes. Messages come from her mobile phone saying she is Ok but did she send them? Paige doesn't believe so and starts her own search but who can she trust? A good gripping story that kept me guessing til the end.
This was an addictive domestic thriller that was so hard to put down. I really enjoyed this book. This was my first read by S D Robertson and it was so good he has been added to my author's list.
So many secrets, so many lies, so much deception packed into one story. Told from multiple POV'S, it centers around the disappearance of Jenna, a young twenty something year old from the neighborhood. After a neighborhood barbecue, Jenna goes missing. The adults all think she just went off while grieving for her mother who recently passed away. However, Paige, her best friend from childhood senses something is wrong. Determined to find where Jenna is, Paige sets out to find answers.
This was a fast paced suspense story that had multiple twists that added layers of intrigue to it.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy
I really wanted to enjoy this book having read other books by S. D Robertson which I have enjoyed, but this one I struggled with, there was far too many characters and that put me right off.
This was a pretty good book! It held my attention the entire time, and the ending had a really great twist that I wasn't expecting. My only minor complaint is that a lot of characters were introduced very quickly, and it took awhile for me to be able to keep them all straight. That may just be a personal issue, and not necessarily a problem for others. Overall, I did enjoy the story, and would recommend!
The Cry is a fast-paced tale of friendship and the lengths someone will go to save a friend.
When Jenna disappears the day after a loud cry is heard by neighbors, her friend, Paige, feels in her gut that the two incidents are related. Though she cannot convince anyone else of this, she refuses to give up on Jenna.
There are many, many characters in this book and I struggled to keep up with who was who and who did what. The book has many surprise twists and definitely held my interest throughout. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced reader copy.
The Cry, by S.D. Robertson was a multi-character book and one I found hard to follow because of that. I almost felt I needed an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of all the characters. With that being said, the story had many twists and turns and I was completely surprised with where it took me which kept me engaged.
I enjoyed the storyline of Paige and Jenna's friendship and appreciated Paige knowing something was wrong with Jenna and wouldn't give up until she found her friend.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC. I would recommend this to people for the fast-paced interesting story which is a hard one to guess but be sure to pay attention to all the different characters so you can follow the story better than I did.
The Cry is an edge of your seat domestic thriller. A piercing scream is heard during a neighborhood barbecue, where friends are heavily drinking and eating. The source of the scream cannot be located, however Paige is terrified it could be her best friend Jenna. Paige has returned from a year traveling in Australia after leaving her university under terrible circumstances. Jenna seems to have disappeared, Paige is convinced she is in trouble, and sets out investigating on her own. There are several interwoven characters in the neighborhood where everyone has a secret. The story is well constructed and an interesting and quick read. With thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC. My opinions are my own.
I loved this author's previous novel, The Playground so I was eager to get stuck into this. It started off well, but there were too many narrators and it confused me at times. I also felt it weakened the plot overall. It wasa good read and enough to keep my attention, but it wasn't as good as The Playground.
The Cry is told from multiple viewpoints in both the past and present. There are a lot of characters and almost all of them tell their story, which contributed to the overall storyline.. I felt there were far too many narrators, though one could argue that everyone has something going on in their life, and proves people aren’t always who they appear to be. Unfortunately I didn’t connect with any of the characters or their thoughts and actions, and didn’t find their dialogue believable. There were some surprise twists and some shock and awe, but ultimately this book was not for me.
Found it quite slow
To begin with. However as
The book goes on I
Couldn’t put it down! Lots of twists and turns!
Paige comes back after a year long trip to find her friend Jenna hiding things. When Jenna suddenly leaves, Paige knows something else is really going on. She starts asking questions, searching her house, following people. When she finds her laptop, she asks another friend to hack into it. Paige finds some videos Jenna made that she deleted. Now Paige thinks Jenna is in danger and has to find her. Who is this man Jenna was in a relationship with? Why does her brother have Jenna’s necklace. Was it Jenna that screamed the night of the bbq?? It was rather long. Could def be better if shorter. As I got toward the end, I lost interest and started skimming. I did not see the ending coming. Like at all. But it Def could have been summed it in less pages.
Started slow and then really got better.I thought I knew who the suspect was, but I was wrong! Good weekend read.
this story is so addictive read it in a day. Paige is back from her travelling. her parents have put on a barbecue it's their turn to host the neighborhood barbecue. Paige does not quite know what's going on with her best friend Jenna as she has been distant and not coming to hers for barbecue that night all the guests hear a very high-pitched scream that leaves them all on edge. then Paige gets a text of Jenna to say she is going away. Paige is convinced that scream was Jenna, no one else is worried about her so Paige tries to put the pieces together what's happened to her friend. each Neighbour has something to hide its so good
A fast paced multi character narrative of a young woman’s possible disappearance. All that the characters can really agree on in the beginning is that everyone heard a loud terrified cry during a neighborhood barbecue that remained unexplained. Each character’s narrative contributes to Paige attempting to establish where her best friend Jenna is and unravel the mystery surrounding her. All of the neighbors are harboring secrets. The story has many twists and some unlikely villains.
Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from NetGalley. I have mixed feelings about this book. I found much of it quite slow, and I felt too many different narrators were used, introducing half-finished threads which didn't add anything to the story and weren't explored enough to be engaging. However, the central storyline of Paige and Jenna was excellent, the twists introduced were completely unpredictable and Robertson created real tension.
This book is fantastic! It had so many twists & turns that I didn’t see coming. I couldn’t put it down and read it just a few hours. I love how all the characters are linked & their lives are connected. Definitely one to keep you guessing! Highly recommend it.
I will definitely be reading more for this author.
First book I have read from this author and I enjoyed it. It kept me wanting to read more drawing lots of twists and bad behaviour of the characters. I would definitely read another offering. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
