I couldn’t love this more. I will be gifting this book to everyone I know! These poems speak to me in a way poetry never has. I hope she continues to write more!!!
I fear I may sound like a mean cynic, but this was so earnest and cringey it was hard to read. I feel like I’m her target demo—a 30-something, very online millennial—but this didn’t resonate with me at all. She touches on interesting topics like diet culture and evangelicalism, but every poem is just a mess of cliches, wordplay, and a trite punchline. The whole thing feels like borderline toxic positivity. I don’t begrudge her being given this opportunity or anything, her work just isn’t my cup of tea.
I quite enjoyed listening to this audiobook A Bit Much by Lyndsay Rush narrated by the author! This book is dedicated to Michelle Pfeiffer and I want to know why!! I really enjoyed how these poems are cute, fun, humorous and relatable. I enjoyed the use of song lyrics and the accessibility of these poems. This is a good debut poetry collection!
A Bit Much is one of the best collections of poems I've ever read. And I say this with my full chest.
Lyndsey Rush has written something truly special.
Real, raw, tender, to the point, pointless, profound.
I found myself laughing. I found myself smiling wide. I found myself thinking.
But most importantly I found myself inspired. And isn't that what poetry is all about? Inspiring? Emotionally connecting?
These poems did all this, and so much more.
If you live poetry, get this book.
If you don't like poetry, there's still a REALLY good chance you'll like this book.
I couldn't recommend a book more highly.
5/5
I loved this collection of Lyndsay Rush’s empowering, funny, relatable poetry. I was previously unfamiliar with this poet, and I am delighted to have discovered her work. Hooray for joyful feminism! I particularly loved the poem recounting things that taste better than being skinny feels.
I wasn’t enchanted by every single poem, but many of them made me smile, and the overall collection is now amongst my favorites. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys poetry or needs a bit of acceptance and encouragement.
I think poetry is best enjoyed out loud, so I particularly recommend the audiobook, which is narrated by the author. The audiobook production was excellent, and I loved Rush’s warm, friendly voice and tone of playful amusement. She sounds like someone who would be so much fun to share a drink and talk with.
Thanks to Macmillan Audio for providing me with a free advanced review copy of the audiobook through NetGalley. I volunteered to provide an honest review.
I was provided both an ebook and audio ARC of this book via Netgalley, all opinions are my own.
The author narrates the audiobook, which doesn't always work for novels, but is so perfect when it comes to poetry. I don't think anyone can deliver poetry quite the same way as the poet, so I always appreciate a self narrated poetry collection.
I don't think I've ever connected to a poetry collection the way I did to this one. It is straight forward, witty, and relatable. It deals with body image, weight, aging, relationships, and so many other things you have to deal with as a woman. These poems really spoke to me and I'm grateful to have been able to both listen and read along with them. I really enjoyed the style of poems, they aren't super complex or long. The author gets to the point and they all have clever titles. That won't be everyone's preference when it comes to poetry. For me these were thought provoking without having to think about the meaning of the poem because it was right there on the page.
I thoroughly enjoyed this humorous and clever collection of poems and look forward to reading more from the author in the future. This is a collection I'll be buying because it made me feel seen and and that being "a bit much" might just be the right amount.
I very much enjoyed A Bit Much, a collection of poems from Lyndsay Rush, aka maryoliversdrunkcousin on your social media pages everywhere. The collection is sorted into four categories so you can peruse at your leisure as the mood strikes you. I listened to this as an auidobook and really appreciated Rush's narration of her poems and always truly enjoy experiencing them as they were intended to be read out loud.
If you enjoy Rush's sardonic sense of humor that also veers into tenderness, I definitely recommend this collection. There were several throughout that stuck with me - including the poem about an engagement ring and how..."the setting is delicate and we should be gentle with it...and f*ck me up if that isn't great relationship advice." Equally lovely are her poems dedicated to celebrating women's accomplishments that are not tied to their partners or children, although there are poems that celebrate that, too.
Her poems around letting go and her affirmations poem are two that I could use taped above my dresser or on my work desk, motivating, tender, but with a good humor about them. If you need a little lightness in your life, get a copy of this collection.
Thank you very much to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy.
An excellent, subversive poetry collection. Rush has a unique voice that is both profound, and deeply funny. While her poems don't follow any particular pattern or rhythm, she has a way of delivering a punch in the final line or title. I think her narration is worth listening to, in order to get some of the inflection of her work.
I've been reading Lyndsay's poetry online for a while now and I was so excited when it was announced that she would be coming out with a full collection, and OMG.
This is one of those books that felt like it was written just for me. Scooping so many of my thoughts and fears and joys and insecurities out of my brain and dumping them into a beautiful, chaotic masterpiece. This collection explores so many things that take up so much real estate in my brain, including growing up and loving yourself and finding love and light and laughter in the unexpected beauty of the world and rejecting social expectations and embracing chaos and so much more. It's beautiful and raw and funny and my exact favorite style of poetry.
I received an audio ARC of this book and it was the first time that I've consumed poetry via audiobook, and I loved it. It was short and sweet and read by the author with her original interpretation which I really appreciated. I can't wait for this book to come out so I can dog-ear the paperback to within an inch of its life and put these beautiful poems up on my walls so I can read them every day.
I hope it goes without saying at this point but I HIGHLY recommend this poetry collection! Please read it and follow Lyndsay on Instagram for her stunning poetry.
(audiobook specifically doesn't have a goodreads listing yet, will post and update accordingly once it's available)
Can I give a million out of 5 instead?
As I always say when an author reads their own book for us, you can't ask for much better. This rings especially true for poetry.
A Bit Much is the gateway drug to poetry.
I hadn't even put 2 + 2 together - I had no clue Lyndsay Rush was the hilarious Instagrammer I already knew and loved until I had the book in hand.
I have a feeling you'll see these poems all over social media once this is released to the public.
(Thank you bunches to NetGalley & publisher for ALC in exchange for my honest opinion!)
A Bit Much was an excellent read. I loved the poems and was sad, laughing, or feeling the feels while reading. This is approachable poetry but still beautifully written.
