Quick synopsis:
Welcome back into the Mist…in the astonishing sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller To Kill a Shadow…
Some fear the darkness. It’s the place where horror hides, concealing its rank, sharp teeth and insatiable hunger. But there is no darkness more feared than that of the mist that’s overtaken the kingdom…and its brave—and ultimately doomed—soldiers.
Except for Kiara Frey.
Tropes:

Thoughts:
This was a wonderful sequel to one of my favorite reads last year. I loved the dual perspectives of Kiara and Jude along with the development of their magics. There are some absolutely fantastic quotes in the book:
“I hate your feelings,…they typically end up with an arrow being shot at us or someone trying to stab you.” He wasn’t wrong.
“We’ve spent our lives buried beneath the threat of death, and that’s no way to live. I’m not done with this life yet, and I sure as hells am not done with your brooding ass.”
This is the final book in the duology, but the world could still be explored with different characters, this world is interesting and still ripe for more stories. Highly recommend reading this duo!!!

thank you to entangled teen and katherine quinn for the opportunity to read this book early in exchange for my thoughts!

i usually try not to sit with my feelings too much after i read a book before i write a review, but this one i had to. i’m finding it hard to correctly put my thoughts into words, but they’re mostly positive.
i really liked this book, it was a perfect conclusion to the duet, and i find myself actually really satisfied. it usually doesn’t happen for me when a series ends, i’m usually left wanting more but i found this ending more than satisfying. everything was tied up in a pretty neat bow. it’s not exactly your typical HEA, but it was still nice.
i also found myself falling back in love with the characters. i had forgotten how much i loved them and their dynamic in the time between these books. i adored jake just like i did before. he was definitely the comedic relief again and i found myself highlighting so many of his lines because i laughed so much. kiara and jude? chef’s kiss. i love them individually and them together is just so, so perfect.
my one gripe, enough that it deducted a star for me, was that something happened (no spoilers of course, but it is a trope i know a lot of people hate), which was a huge consequence, but by the end of the book, that whole “thing” was basically reversed so in the end nothing really ended up happening. it felt a lot like a way for the ending to make sense, but the final battle didn’t REALLY have any consequences in the end. if that consequence had stayed, i really wouldn’t have minded, it would’ve been a 4.5/5 for me. but it’s the fact that it basically got rectonned that just didn’t agree with me.
i really liked the pacing, it didn’t feel like too much was happening at once, and the stakes felt appropriate for it, too. i find that oftentimes duets feel like either two books that should’ve been one or two books that could’ve been three. that wasn’t a problem with these and i liked that things still felt high stakes without dragging.
i feel like there IS, however, room for maybe a spinoff or novella, which would be pretty cool. i’d love to see a little bit more about the aftermath of everything, where things go once the story ends. i think that would really add to the story, and it would give a little bit more closure because there were a couple of things i could like to see developed further.
i don’t think i’ve felt this satisfied with a fantasy duet in a long time, and i can’t wait to see what else katherine quinn comes out with in the future.
Be ready to jump right back in on the action. This duology is best read back to back. I actually started the book having trouble remembering a few details and there wasn’t much recap. To Shatter the Night starts where To Kill a Shadow ended.
The ending saved it for me. The pacing in the middle of this book was a little too drawn out. I did enjoy book one better, but still a solid duology. The constant mooning over each other got old with Jude and Kiara and brought my rating down. In the middle of a battle?! Pay attention to what you should be doing! Maybe because this is supposed to be YA? But there were a few fade to black intimate scenes. Definitely older YA.
I did still enjoy the cast of characters and the magic in this world.
Thank you Entangled and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I loved the end of this duology. It was such a good way for the story to end! It was so fun to see the arcs of the characters and I loved how atmospheric the writing was. The mist was almost like another character.
This is the 2nd book in a Duology by Katherine Quinn and we start right, right where we left off in the first book.
I will not write that much about the story line as I do struggle to not spoil anything. But while we start with Kiara & Jude being separated – it doesn´t take too long for them to find each other again and to continue on to their journey of finding a way to defeat the Moon God.
Throughout the story, there are several times where I thought the relationship between these two would develop in a different direction than it will in the end. Absolutely love the journey in itself and the resolution at the end. Love the banter and tension and heartbreak and everything.
These two as all others in the group – chefs kiss!

Loved it! Highly recommend ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
To Shatter the Night by Katherine Quinn is an enchanting conclusion to the mistlands duology.
What i loved
1. Continued wonderful character development
2. phenomenal pacing
3.Jude and Kirra spending some time apart made for excellent Opportunities to show case both of their abilities better.
4. As a young adult title the spice is kept to a minimum which I just need as a reader sometimes.
Who I Recommend this title for
As the Conclusion to a story this title is best enjoyed by readers who have already read and loved book one .
A satisfying end to the mistlands duology! I really enjoyed the twists and getting to know more about the Lore and gods of the realm, and loved the relationship development between all the characters..Would love a Jake spinoff series!!
This was such an emotional rollercoaster! There were many twists I wasn't expecting. I loved the character growth and the ending was perfection.
Thank you to Entangled Teen for this e-arc! I loved To Kill a Shadow and was so excited for this sequel. I needed more Kiara and Jude in my life!
This book did not disappoint. It is full of action, adventure, tense moments, love, friendship, and reunited/found family. I loved every single moment. You go through a wide range of emotions while reading and it’s worth it. Kiara and Jude are a top tier couple and I love how you see their relationship grow. Watching them come into their powers and harnessing their strength was perfect. And I LOVED that we get Kiara as a shadow wielder! What a badass move to make the FMC have those powers over the MMC and that SHE will burn the world down to protect him. *chefs kiss*
I love all of the side characters too! The journey they go and how they come together quickly to achieve their goal was fun to read. They go through a lot but still looked out for each other.
AND THE TWIST 😱 did not see that coming. 10/10. Excellent writing. Everyone needs to read this book.

“I’d make it my life’s mission to unseat such cowardly men of unearned power”
I loved this book just as much as the first. It picked up right where To Kill A Shadow left off and the suspense and adventure did not let up the entire time. The time that Jude and Kiara spent apart I think was really great to understand their gifts even more. The side characters added so much to the story. I loved Jake in this sequel. He used sarcasm as a way to deal with the situation and it made me laugh at time. The whole world and prophecy sucked me in and I loved how it continued to developed. The dual pov left small cliffhangers at the end of some chapters and it got my adrenaline going multiple times. I enjoyed the romance but the found family warmed my heart.
Thank you @bookedwiththeemilys @katherinequinnwrites @entangledteen for the gifted copy
To Shatter The Night picks up right where book one left all of us readers in anticipation. Not only did Katherine Quinn manage to leave me an emotional mess at the end of To Kill A Shadow, but she also managed to break my heart quite a few times in this one. In this book, Kiara and Jude team up with some unlikely allies to save the kingdom from the curse of darkness it's under. Let me just say that if you're looking for action and adventure, then this book is full of it. Just like in the first book, we have an amazing found family dynamic with a brand new set of fabulous characters. Kiara and Jude are finding a way to make their relationship work despite the fact that she's a shadow wielder. I love Kiara and Jude as a couple! I was rooting for their love story as much as I was for them to succeed in their goal. This is hands down my favorite romantsy I've read to date. I loved everything about these two books and was sad when I closed the cover and it was over.
Thanks to @entangledteen for the gifted e-arc of To Shatter The Night!

I loved To Kill A Shadow last year so I’m super excited that I had the pleasure to read and review To Shatter The Night this year! And this book went above and beyond what I expected.
𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚: Quinn did a phenomenal job building upon the world she created in To Kill A Shadow. In To Shatter The Night, we have details about the Gods and their lore expanded upon.
𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦: Kiara and Jude continue to remind me why I loved them in the first book. This time, they’re really pushed to their limits as they try to conquer their new powers while figuring out how to “shatter the night”. We’re are introduced to new characters in this book and I loved them, especially The Fox. They all have compelling backstories and are fully fleshed out to give important aspects to the story.
𝗣𝗟𝗢𝗧: Loads of fun while still being incredibly high stakes. Well planned out while keeping a good fast pace. Was definitely un-put-downable
𝗩𝗜𝗕𝗘𝗦: Beautiful High Fantasy vibes with excellent use of the Hero’s Journey archetype. This sequel had an even higher magical atmosphere than the first book did.

𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃 𝐈𝐅 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄:
☆ Sequel
☆ Feisty FMC w/Shadow magic
☆ Secrets
☆ Cursed Lands
☆ Sacred Temples
☆ The Gods walk among us
☆ I love her but I can’t touch her
This was a fantastic conclusion to the Mistland duology, and I found myself enjoying it even more than the first book. Everything flowed seamlessly, and it picked up right where the last one left off, with plenty of connections and “aha” moments along the way. The romance was a slow burn, building up tension, angst, and a lot of yearning. I especially loved how the FMC was the one wielding the cool shadow powers while still being a total badass.
The world-building and plot were also strong, as we saw the main characters start off apart and then come back together to face the world side by side. I appreciated the prophecy element and the way the adventure and god lore were integrated into the story.
As with the first book, the found family dynamic was one of my favorite aspects, and it was wonderful to see the relationships and friendships between the other characters develop as well. The themes of love, self-discovery, and character growth were handled really well.
To say I have been dying for this sequel is an understatement. I devoured book 1 and was so excited for To Shatter the Night. Unfortunately this one was a bit lackluster for me. The chemistry of the leads and the side characters leading up to the twist in book 1 is what made it so magical. Their separation and some of the revelations of the side characters from book 1 made this one a bit slower for me. With that being said - I still loved Kiara and Jude. Also still loving that Kiara is our shadow wielder instead of the male characters. Good conclusion - just a bit slower than I would have hoped for.
I loved To Kill A Shadow so much, and this one was just as good, if not better than the first one! It picks up right where the last book ended, and it kept me on my toes the entire time. This book is packed with so much action, quests, and danger that you can’t stop reading it once you start. We got more worldbuilding and understanding of the gods, goddesses, and prophecies, and it deepened my connection to the story. Kiara is an excellent heroine. She’s a strong and skilled fighter, and I love that she was the one wielding the shadows. Just like in the first book, the character development of the main characters and side characters is wonderful. We get to experience their self discovery and acceptance, budding friendships, choice of family, and sweet romances. Speaking of romance, Kiara and Jude have the best slow burn romance that is filled with angst, tension, and yearning. I adored every second of it. Overall, I loved this book and highly recommend it if you’re looking for a YA romantasy with adventure, magic, betrayals, and a swoony romance.

Thank you to Entangled Teen, Entangled Publishing, Katherine Quinn, and NetGalley for the ARC. I received an advanced copy for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was lucky enough to receive this as an ARC and just wow!
It literally starts off where we ended and it’s amazing. Seeing how they all continue after the events in the mist is just crazy. They are still on this adventure together but as always some complications do arise.
That plot twist tho!!! I didn’t see it coming holy crap!!
Every series ending is bittersweet, and this one is no exception. I fell in love with the story Katherine brought us in the first book and fell harder in the second one. To Shatter the Night was one of my most anticipated books, and it didn't disappoint.
The second book picks up where we left off in the first one. The kingdom of Asidia is still cursed with eternal night and deadly Mist surrounding it. Our brooding commander, Jude, is in Fortuna trying to find a different way to save the kingdom from the vengeful god than sacrificing the only thing that matters to him. Kiara, angry at him for leaving her in the Mist, is hell-bent on getting to him, yelling at him, finishing their task of bringing the reign of night to an end together, then torturing the commander till the end of their days, precisely in this order. Naturally, nothing can go smoothly, and our heroes face one obstacle and threat after another. Between trying to understand their newfound powers, saving one another, venturing to unknown territories of gods, fulfilling the prophecy and restoring the balance, they can hardly find time to catch their breath, let alone enjoy each other's company. And when such a moments come, it's not without problems either.
The story is told from two perspectives, which I always appreciate because it adds depth and allows us to see what each character is thinking. Kiara is a strong warrior who is stubborn and fiercely protective of those close to her. Despite her supernatural powers, she is not an overpowered heroine; she has flaws. Kiara has insecurities. She is reckless and tends to act before thinking, which drives Jude mad.
Jude, on the other hand, is a man who has faced many challenges, and life wasn't easy for him, which made him view himself as unworthy of affection or love. He is measured, always thinking before he acts. But throughout the story, Jude gradually rediscovers himself, yearning for more out of life—he wants to live, love, and protect the kingdom and its people, as well as Kiara, who has become the centre of his world. I love their banter, and their dynamic truly melts my heart; they are both darkness and light, in perfect balance to each other. All I can say is that they deserve love, happiness, and so much more (they've been through enough).
The plot twist caught me completely off guard! I thought I knew what was happening, only to realize I was wrong. So wrong! What was that?! I even had to reread it. What an incredible story, and what a fantastic conclusion to the series! I highlighted this in my review for the first book, and I'll do it again here - the little excerpts from letters, and lore at the head of each chapter are great and I was trying to solve them like a puzzle... The gods are more involved in this book than in the first one which I enjoyed immensely. Add a dangerous quest, strong friendships, witty banter and a delicious slow-burn romance to the mix and you get a perfect read you won't be able to put down. I'm not lying when I say I highlighted almost the whole book - there are so many moments and quotes! Anyway, I know I will reread it, all while hoping for a chance to return to the world of Mistland one day.
Thank you, NetGalley and Entangled for granting me access to this book (and a chance to read it sooner) in exchange for my honest review!
"It is often what we love most that kills us in the end. But to die with a smile isn't a terrible way to go."
"'You'll never be alone in the dark again. But if you do somehow slip and fall, I'll be right behind you.'"
This was a great conclusion to Kiara and Jude's story. It picked up right where the other left off and the journey they go on is very satisfying.
I didn't love the first book, mainly because insta-love isn't for me. In this book however, they've had time for their relationship to develop through what they experienced in the first book so I found them much more compelling as a couple! They go through some real challenges here but support each other every step of the way which I loved to see.
More characters join their crew, and I enjoyed getting to know them as well.
The latter half of the book was my favorite part, as they make their way through a dangerous temple full of traps. It was a ton of fun and full of tension.
Without spoiling anything, I really liked where the ending went. I thought it fit them very well!
Thanks to Entangled for the review copy. This review was left voluntarily and all opinions are my own.
I absolutely loved diving back into Mistlands to read the second book in this duology! I really enjoyed To Kill A Shadow and it was so fun to dive back into this series.
This was a great slow-burn romance! It had so many of my favorite Romantasy elements like shadow wielding, hating that you love someone, and trying to avoid a prophesied fate.
I will definitely be re-reading this duology! 🤩 I listened to the second book and Moira Quirk and Gideon Emery did a fantastic job on the narration!
Thank you to Entangled Teen for the gifted copy. All thoughts are my own.
To Shatter the Night wrapped up the Mistland duology with a satisfying conclusion that hits all the right notes and emotions. Kiara is easily one of my favorite FMCs. She is fierce, wields shadows, and her strong personality continues to shine with strength and determination—a refreshing twist that’s usually reserved for the MMC in the Romantasy genre. The slow-burn romance (ACTUALLY slow burn, thank you 😍) between her and Jude is full of tension, angst, and yearning, making every moment worth the wait. The world-building is well done, a world complete with gods, prophecies, and adventure, and the found family dynamic adds warmth and depth to the story.
If you liked To Kill A Shadow, then you will love this conclusion.
If you haven't read To Kill a Shadow and are into upper YA (maybe NA?), slow burn romance, strong sassy shadow wielding FMCs, decent world building and found family then you need to add this duology to your TBR.
Thanks to Entangled Teen and Booked with the Emilys for providing me with a review copy 💖
