I loved the story, the world building and meeting the different characters. I felt completely immersed in the story and couldn't stop reading it. Wow just wow this one is amazing
When Katherine Quinn’s To Kill a Shadow came out I was curious. I mean really curious. The book kept whispering to me that I NEEDED to read it. Having the book blurb state that it was a “fantasy horror” gave me a huge pause. I am by no means a horror fan. I get nervous watching a Hallmark cozy mystery. I had no problem reading the book although it depicts nightmares, death, and the unaliving of one’s self. I loved the plot and fell in love with the characters. I even cried at a scene or two. The ending was shocking and I couldn’t wait for the next book.
To Shatter the Night picks up immediately after the events of To Kill a Shadow. I can not stress enough that this is NOT a standalone read. I immediately pre-ordered To Shatter the Night when the release date was announced. I just wasn’t happy to learn that The Mistlands was a duology and not a series. I mean really, so much went on in To Kill a Shadow I didn’t think Katherine could cover everything in just one more book. Again, the revelation at the end of To Kill a Shadow was shocking. But Katherine did and she also managed to add new characters that added to the story.
To Shatter the Night was emotional and shocking, to say the least. There are definitely items/events worthy of trigger warnings, which you can find on the publisher’s website. Looking back, To Kill a Shadow was gruesome and action-packed. To Shatteer the Night was the same, but a little different. The characters already had heart. But their heart, courage, determination, and loyalty are front and center in this story. Katherine definitely brought out multiple emotions in me. Tears, shock, disbelief, anger, frustration. You name it, I more than likely felt it. I truly loved how she ended the story and gave the characters just what they needed. She does however leave the door open for potentially another book or a spin-off. Sorry for that little spoiler. Fingerscrossed this isn’t the last we will hear of Jude Maddox and Kiara Frey.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Katherine has in store for readers next.

Let me start by saying I love Katherine Quinn, her writing, and the style of it. It is lavish and mystical, filled with everything I look for in a romantic book, and this one was no different.
After reading To Kill A Shadow, I couldn't wait to get my hands on To Shatter the Night. I didn't know how it could stand up to the first book, but it did, and in my opinion, surpassed it.
Kiara and Jude, ohh, just thinking of their names, the magical moments in this book, they're going to live rent-free in my head for a while, and I'm not mad about it.
This book is a masterclass in visual storytelling; it's immersive, spellbinding even, letting you feel like you've been wrapped up in the shadows, watching from the sidelines as this story unfolds, and I loved it.
I will say that by now, I've made my feelings on cruelty to and death of animals clear, and while this one did have some moments, there was also a very clear trigger-waning page that let me know it was going to happen, keep an eye out for it and skim past some parts that I didn't feel the need to read. I appreciate those warnings more than I can say.
This was a very satisfying conclusion to this duology. I think the found family trope was expanded on and so well done in this book. To Shatter the Night should be held up as THE example for how to do a slow burn in the best way - loved it!

Review: To Shatter The Night was the Mecca of Katherine Quinn Fantasy! Jude and Kiara absolutely destroyed my heart in this book in every way they could but by the end they had rebuilt the foundation so strong that it left me sitting in satisfaction about the completion of their story and their HEA. This book takes place right where the first book ended and Katherine left no time waiting for Kiara to remiss over Jude leaving her. The immediate shift in her character enthralled me all at once since we truly began to see her fierce inner fire as she began to accept her magic and the prophecy that her and Jude were born to complete.
This book interwove so many old and new characters that I found myself becoming immersed in the world of magic and mayhem that Kiara leaves in her wake but I also fell in love with Liam and Jake again as we saw more and more of them and the bond they shared with Kiara. I can honestly say that Jake became my favorite character in this book and I adored all the levity and happiness that he brought to Kiara and to Liam later in the book. The way Katherine was able to showcase the craziness that he encompassed in a way that made you laugh was truly one of the best parts in the book (epic fantasy and romance aside!)
This book also amped up the world building a TON. Kiara and Jude both have to battle their inner demons and trauma but also face the end game of the Mistlands prophecy that introduces all the Gods and Goddesses. I appreciated how Katherine took the time to cultivate and create the stories for each major God or Goddess but also show how Jude and Kiara were parallel or relevant to the fight alongside them. The turmoil these beings added to the plot had me giggling since I knew Katherine was just going to make Kiara go at the hard core!
To Shatter The Night also reveals the deepening bond between Kiara and Jude. Seeing the innate bond grow stronger between Jude and Kiara allowed me to see how they each CHOSE each other to be each other’s person but also how they were tied together by more than just magic and fate. Katherine truly did these two justice with the way she poured heart and soul into both of them but also had them be vulnerable with human mistakes. At the end of the day this book is one of my top romantasy books of the year and for sure one of my all time favorite books from Entangled Publishing!
Rating: 100+; To Shatter The Night broke me down and taped me up in the best of ways and Katherine truly did Jude and Kiara justice with this ending!
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for sending me this eARC!
3.5 stars.
I LOVED the first book. With this one, I struggled to finish. Lots of action, very eventful, not much character building though. Also, the Temple of Doom (it’s not called that but seriously it was one) was a bit too much. It felt like at page 205, everything just went nonstop major event to nonstop major event. It seemed a lot of action/fight to survive filler; I was able to skim quite a bit without feeling like I missed anything. Whenever books do this, I think, no one is coming out without serious mental health issues. And when the character building began, like thinking of the future, the characters were “nope! Can’t do that!”
Spoiler alert:
I also assumed he would become a god but also it was meh. Both are immortal and get their HEA but it was too much for me.
I still highly recommend the first book. The second felt more YA than the first book and I’d only recommend it for those who want lots of life-or-death action.
This sequel picked up where the first book left off and took us through even more intense adventures where the enemies, foes, monsters and the groups entire lives are still not clear. What is the point of their trek, beyond the stated objective of course? Who are friends and who are not? Is Jude the good guy Kiara sees bits of here and there or the evil guy he often seems? I'm not telling. You'll have to read the book to find out for yourselves. And I recommend you read it.
The characters in this book are interesting, intense, complex. Quinn builds a world so unlike our own and creates an amazing amount of adventure. Kiara will be tested. Repeatedly. As will her friends. The story is full of imagination and highly entertaining.
A good read, this one.
Thanks to the publisher, author and NetGalley for the ARC.
A wonderful conclusion to this imaginative fantasy. I am so happy with where Jude and Kiara ended up in this finale. This one picks up right where the first book leaves off and thrusts you right back into the intense twists and turns. I love all the additional supporting characters we meet and the romantic aspect between Jude and Kiara. Overall, it is a quick, intense, and magical duology.
Tropes:
- Slow burn
- Upper YA Fantasy
- Gods & Prophecy
- Found family
Katherine Quinn is the QUEEN of fantasy. I adore her world building and character development. She writes swoonworthy characters and keeps readers enthralled and on the edge of their seat! To shatter the nights is a MUST READ.
To Shatter The Night by Katherine Quinn picks up right where book one left all of us readers in anticipation. Not only did Katherine Quinn manage to leave me an emotional mess at the end of To Kill A Shadow, but she also managed to break my heart quite a few times in this one.
In this book, Kiara and Jude team up with some unlikely allies to save the kingdom from the curse of darkness it's under. Let me just say that if you're looking for action and adventure, then this book is full of it. Just like in the first book, we have an amazing found family dynamic with a brand new set of fabulous characters. Kiara and Jude are finding a way to make their relationship work despite the fact that she's a shadow wielder. I love Kiara and Jude as a couple! I was rooting for their love story as much as I was for them to succeed in their goal.
This is hands down my favorite romantsy I've read to date. I loved everything about these two books and was sad when I closed the cover and it was over.
This sequel was so good. I love the way the author ended things. These books are an emotional roller coaster with ups and downs, romance, tragedy, and trauma. This was such a good duology! Make sure to read To Kill A Shadow first!
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for the early copy of this book! All opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed this! I think I may even like this one better than the first. It had a really satisfying pace that kept me hooked!
"To Shatter the Night" by Katherine Quinn completely swept me away. As someone who loves fantasy, I was captivated by the rich world-building and high-stakes adventure. But what truly made the book special for me was the connection between Jude and Kiara. Their bond felt so real and heartfelt, adding depth to every twist and turn. It’s the kind of story that stays with you long after you finish, and I can’t wait to see what comes next in the series.
Thank you Entangled for the finished copy of this book, my opinions are my own.

Thoughts:
This was a wonderful sequel to one of my favorite reads last year. I loved the dual perspectives of Kiara and Jude along with the development of their magics. There are some absolutely fantastic quotes in the book:
“I hate your feelings,…they typically end up with an arrow being shot at us or someone trying to stab you.” He wasn’t wrong.
“We’ve spent our lives buried beneath the threat of death, and that’s no way to live. I’m not done with this life yet, and I sure as hells am not done with your brooding ass.”
This is the final book in the duology, but the world could still be explored with different characters, this world is interesting and still ripe for more stories. Highly recommend reading this duo!!!
Be ready to jump right back in on the action. This duology is best read back to back. I actually started the book having trouble remembering a few details and there wasn’t much recap. To Shatter the Night starts where To Kill a Shadow ended.
The ending saved it for me. The pacing in the middle of this book was a little too drawn out. I did enjoy book one better, but still a solid duology. The constant mooning over each other got old with Jude and Kiara and brought my rating down. In the middle of a battle?! Pay attention to what you should be doing! Maybe because this is supposed to be YA? But there were a few fade to black intimate scenes. Definitely older YA.
I did still enjoy the cast of characters and the magic in this world.
Thank you Entangled and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I loved the end of this duology. It was such a good way for the story to end! It was so fun to see the arcs of the characters and I loved how atmospheric the writing was. The mist was almost like another character.
This is the 2nd book in a Duology by Katherine Quinn and we start right, right where we left off in the first book.
I will not write that much about the story line as I do struggle to not spoil anything. But while we start with Kiara & Jude being separated – it doesn´t take too long for them to find each other again and to continue on to their journey of finding a way to defeat the Moon God.
Throughout the story, there are several times where I thought the relationship between these two would develop in a different direction than it will in the end. Absolutely love the journey in itself and the resolution at the end. Love the banter and tension and heartbreak and everything.
These two as all others in the group – chefs kiss!

What i loved
1. Continued wonderful character development
2. phenomenal pacing
3.Jude and Kirra spending some time apart made for excellent Opportunities to show case both of their abilities better.
4. As a young adult title the spice is kept to a minimum which I just need as a reader sometimes.
Who I Recommend this title for

A satisfying end to the mistlands duology! I really enjoyed the twists and getting to know more about the Lore and gods of the realm, and loved the relationship development between all the characters..Would love a Jake spinoff series!!
This was such an emotional rollercoaster! There were many twists I wasn't expecting. I loved the character growth and the ending was perfection.
