BOOK REVIEW
To Shatter the Night by Katherine Quinn
Publication Date: December 3, 2024

Much like the first installment, this book is high-action and fast paced. There is a lot packed into this book, and my eyes were glued to the page.

This was a great conclusion to the series, and it elevated the duology in my opinion. I especially enjoyed meeting the new side characters and the found family elements within this book.

Read if you enjoy:
Upper YA romantasy
Yearning and angst
Feisty shadow wielding FMC
Prophecy, cursed lands, and secrets
Found family

To Shatter the Night was the perfect conclusion for the Mistland duology. I had previously loved book one and this didn't disappoint.
Kiara and Jude have been dancing around each other without truly realizing how important their connection is, this sequel gives us a lot more development on their relationship and the yearning they have for each other.
I also loved reading about the friendships they have, how they find their own little family and fight the opressive system.
This romantasy story is mostly about coming to terms with who you are and self-discovery, as well as facing the world and its obstacles with the people you love!

Book 2 picks right up where book 1 ends and does not disappoint! I loved this one even more than the first. The adventure, the magic, the twists, the found family *swoon* gets me every time.

This is a great conclusion to the duology and I highly recommend the Mistlands duology to anyone looking for a new YA Romantasy series to love.

Thank you Booked with the Emily’s, the author and entangled teen for the #gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

To Kill A Shadow leaves you ready for this one immediately. And has you right back into the adventure. I don’t want to spoil anything if you haven’t read book one, but this one took you on a journey! I didn’t expect the turns this book took but in the best possible way. I was constantly waiting to see what happened next and how it would all end.

This was a great duology and I would recommend it!

Ah yes, another completed Katherine Quinn series I adored!

This was a total adventure from start to finish, and it picks up EXACTLY where we left off in book 1. We get to explore a whole new city, learn more about the gods and monsters of the world, and dive into a whole new facet of magic and lore. The world, the characters, the writing, everything gripped me from the very first page.

I really adore Jude & Kiara: they are both deeply flawed people, and they have a lot to learn in order to overcome the problems they are facing. Their relationship deepens really beautifully in this one, as do their greater relationships with our side characters. Katherine’s way of writing is so visceral; it really felt like every scene and image was right in front of me as I read. There were unexpected twists and turns, and sacrifices that hurt my heart, but still all led to a conclusion that felt satisfying and true to the story and the characters.

The only reason I’ve knocked off a star on this one is because of what I find to be a common issue in duologies especially lately: there is just so much action and ground to cover that certain things about specifically the magic and world that weren’t explored or fleshed out nearly as much as I wanted them to be. This is especially evident in the last 30%, when our characters are barreling toward the penultimate battle and need to use their abilities to their fullest extent. I found myself confused about why/how they could pull off the things they did, and I really think some of the earlier action scenes could have been skipped in favor of a good old fashioned training montage where everyone learns more about what they are capable of, how to manage it, and how it fits into the greater conflict.

All this said, I absolutely blew through this book and I think there is so, so much to love within it. I adore the characters, their relationships to one another, the world & imagery of it, the gods and where they fall in the history that led to where we are now. If you love a prickly, stabby FMC, a tortured and resilient MMC, a shadow ✨mommy✨, and unlikely twists and turns, you’ll really adore this too! Thank you to entangled teen for this eArc!

To Shatter the Night picks up right where To Kill a Shadow finished. Jude and Kiara's journey to bring back the light to their kingdom concludes in book 2. I think I liked this book even more than the first. Both the FMC (shadow wielder) and MMC's powers, and relationship, continue to grow in this story during their adventure. The thing I liked most is that I was actually surprised by several things at the end of the story, instead of being able to fully predict the ending. Give this series a shot if you like found family, he falls first, slow burn, gods, and quests. Thank you Netgalley and Entangled Publishing for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Brittany at Entangled Publishing for the eARC via NetGalley!

Writing this review is not an easy task since I was so excited for this book. I honestly struggled with this book which feels wrong to say since I loved book 1 so much and other Entangled publishings. So I will do my best to highlight my negatives and positives I felt. My favorite thing about it was actually the ending where it felt like the book finally took a breath. Everything else in the book felt overwhelming to me as there was so much information and things thrown at the reader that it felt like we never came up for air as it was one thing after another with obsession thrown in as the free time. This for myself made it very hard to follow and I often found myself re-reading pages because I wasn’t able to understand or absorb what I just read on the page. I do understand that everything was a race against time for the characters, and there is nothing wrong with that and that point is made very clear since this picks up right where book 1 ends (I do love that about it!). I think my bigger issue lies in the fact that the characters are so “in love” with each other that it felt like that was all I was seeing/reading.

Originally I loved this series for the adventure more than the budding romance. Book 2 felt like the romance overtook the whole book. Jude is clearly obsessed with Kiara, but I would have loved to learn more about him as a person now that she has changed him vs him just saying she made him into someone who cares and has a heart now. I found that the commander we knew lost his voice and it didn’t come back if that makes sense. I do love how accepting Jude is of his new power however, and I do think that shows his character growth. The only thing I found odd about it is how it came too easily for him and Ki’s was more of a struggle. Maybe I just misunderstood something there but it felt like the growth focus was definitely on her more than him.

Ki becomes more aggressive and loses herself to her emotions in this book, and that struggle is clear but as a FMC that was extremely strong in the last book, this one felt like she lost that about herself and the only way to come back was someone pointing it out, mainly Jude. While I understand they are two halves of a whole, I just struggled with the grasp that they both went from very strong independent people, to two who couldn’t function without the other and it just didn’t feel healthy.

Jake and Liam, YES! Love this duo and it seemed so natural, I loved that about it.

I state the ending is my favorite and that is because it feels like the character's independence finally comes back. The two work without each other, function on their own during the day, and at night reunite with one another. The much needed break of slowing down finally shows and I actually enjoyed that the romance was not written onto the page and just slightly mentioned since it had felt so overwhelming the whole book. The ending made me want to keep reading and learning about the story after their battle with the Moon God and makes me curious about the replacement, but if a book like that is made, I would like it to be spread out more, not 6 things happening back to back. I would have liked more world building since we have so many God’s/Goddess’s in this world but still only 5 are seen and 6 are mentioned (I am counting the Sun God as 1 here since that is passed on).

I still enjoy Katherine’s books, however I am happy to see this duology end. That being said I would be okay with spin-offs as long as they are at a slower pace (more along the lines of book 1) and welcome in world building since this seems like a world that has a lot of potential.

Thank you to Booked with the Emilys, Katherine Quinn, and Entangled Teen for the gifted copy of this book.

The highly anticipated sequel to the Mistlands duology has finally arrived, and it’s everything I hoped for! After thoroughly enjoying the first book, To Kill A Shadow, I can confidently say the sequel did not disappoint.

The characters were truly captivating, and the relationships that blossomed between the main characters were nothing short of extraordinary. The chemistry between Kiara and Jude unfolds beautifully as a slow burn, making their connection even more rewarding. I loved the theme of found family, and it was a joy to witness the various friendships and dynamics among the other characters. The world-building was exceptional, immersing me in a rich and vibrant setting. The quest to the moon temple was a thrilling adventure filled with suspenseful trials and traps that kept me on the edge of my seat.

If you’re a fan of fantasy blended with a touch of romance, this duology is a must-read!

There were some twists that definitely took me by surprise and it kept me on the edge of the my seat the entire time. I love Kiara and Jude, and the magic system was so fun. Katherine’s storytelling is amazing and I cannot wait to see what she writes next. I definitely recommend this duology if you are looking for a magical adventure.

This was a great follow up of To Kill a Shadow. I don’t want to say too much and spoil book one. The duo needs to be read in order for things to make sense.

We have interesting magic, a mist plague, and a slow burn romance between a commander + recruit.
I feel like book two had more action, more romance, and more family/found family. I loved the side characters and the magic of the world. Jude and Kiara were damaged characters who found each other and found a piece of themselves. I was not able to predict some of the twists, but I enjoyed how Kiara and Jude’s story wrapped up.

This continues right after the first book and does not stop until you reach the end.

It’s is filled with adventure, suspense, puzzles and mazes, and of course, romance. That slow build romance that begins to make you wonder whether they’ll be okay or not. Not to mention some other side romances 👀

There’s a point in this book that I felt like I was in an Indiana Jones movie 😆 it added such a nice twist to the story, not to mention suspense.

I truly enjoyed this duology so so much. It had such a unique premise, and one of the best romances that kept me on my toes the entire time. It also has one of my favorite found families and some of my favorite characters.

Jude and Kiara are seriously a couple of my all time favorite characters after reading this duology. They just had the best communication(for the most part), and would literally die for each other. Jude such a romantic and Kiara is tough, but seems to get all cuddly, if you will, with Jude. They were just adorable.

I really cannot recommend this duology enough. It’s eerie, suspenseful, romantic(so so romantic), and wonderful relationships that build and characters you can’t help but love, even the villain.

Definitely check this one out! Would love to see more from this world!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the gifted e-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Katherine Quinn has my whole heart! I absolutely love the Mistland series and have been waiting for To Shatter the Night for a year in order to see where Jude and Kiara's story would take them.
To Shatter the Night picks up right where To Kill a Shadow left off and draws you right back into the world that is forever enrobed in night as they continue to look for a way to bring back the elusive sun. Their journey starts with the two separated and the way they come together again was really well thought out and well done. There were so many things from To Kill a Shadow that were exposed and the connections/ mysteries solved were top tier. I love that although we lost some of our found family from the first book, new characters were very organically added in and became part of Jude and Kiara's world and their family. I fell in love with so many of the new additions and found myself laughing out loud, yelling at them at times and utterly heartbroken at other times.
The mystery and continued intrigue made it so easy to keep turning the pages and so easy and also so hard to put the book down. And the irrevocable chemistry between Jude and Kiara was a joy to read. The respect, support, and care that they have for one another and each other's unique traits is so refreshing. The way they accept each other at face value and work toward a future together all while dealing with the weight of the world in their shoulders gave me so much hope.
I thoroughly enjoyed my journey with them and will definitely revisit this world again 💜🩵

I was so excited to return to the Mistlands duology! Book 2 picks up right after the conclusion in Book 1, and our protagonists, Kiara and Jude, must go on a dangerous journey to a sacred temple while seeking a way to break the curse plaguing their realm. They must partner with Jude’s estranged mother, now an infamous thief, and her crew along the journey in addition to Kiara’s brother, Liam.

Similar to the first book, there is high stakes action, mind-bending magic, gods/goddesses behaving badly, and an immersive setting. I loved the dual POV chapters, and enjoyed the character growth of both Kiara and Jude as they grappled with their increased magic, interlinked fates, and the pull between duty and love. Quinn does a good job with counterbalancing the action/fearful monsters with well-timed humor, friendship, and found family. And while the love story between opposites Kiara and Jude is center to this YA Romantasy series, there is also a great story about good versus evil/light versus dark, making this a highly enjoyable series!

After To Kill A Shadow, I was so excited to receive To Shatter The Night! It picks up right where book one left off, and the challenges continue…

Jude and Kiara have gone through so much already, and this book just keeps pushing them to their limits. They just can’t catch a break, but it’s all worth it! I felt so many emotions reading this, but the biggest was emptiness at the end knowing I was done reading their story 😭

Book two is full of quests and trials, suspense, action, new friends, old friends. The prophecy continues, the magic is understood more, and I DID NOT see the plot twist coming!

Favorite Quote: “I’d see the dawn. I’d save my girl. And I would make my own fate. Because. I. Was. Worthy.”

Tropes:
🌚 She’s the shadow wielder
🌞 Prophecies & gods
🌚 Found Family
🌞 Elemental Magic
🌚 Quests/Trials
🌞 Slow Burn

Thank you Entangled Publishing for sending me an arc of this book! I absolutely LOVED it!!

wow just wow, Katherine Quinn blew my mind with To Shatter The Night, it's a story out of this world. The story begins where To Kill a Shadow ends and we see Kiara and Jude face new adventures full of danger and mystery.

The story is filled with magic, action, adventure and also we meet new and interesting characters, the plot keeps you turning the pages without blinking, dangers lurk at every turn, and the plot twists ohmygod, I never expected it, SO GOOD, but what I loved the most was the intense and deep connection between Jude and Kiara, the way they love each other and the way in which both are willing to sacrifice themselves for the other and Jude melted my heart, I love him so much

I'm obsessed with this world, it's a romantasy that will keep you glued to your throat and rooting for the characters, Katherine Quinn is a genius, the way she weaves the whole story together, it is a MASTERPIECE!

Picking up where book 1 left off and we find Kiara and Jude going though it. I am sad to see this story come to an end because I have been in a chokehold since book 1 released last year. This story gives you all the feels for an upper YA romantasy book: Shadow wielding FMC, Witty Banter, Found Family, Angst/Tension, World Building and Slow Burn Romance.

Expect To Find:
World Building
Witty Banter
Shadow Wielding FMC
Unique Magic System
Slow Burn Romance
Found Family
Gods and Prophecies

I can’t wait to purchase this book so I can have the complete duology.

Tropes/Themes: Epic Adventure, Dual POV

To Shatter the Night is the second and final book of the Mistlands duology. This one follows Jude and Kiara as they venture into the temple of the Moon God with new and old friends to end the curse and bring back the day.

The first one of the this duology was fantastic at setting up the world and the enemies to lovers story making this novel the pay off. This is how to successfully write a duology. This book was one of those that I got lost in and became a quick read for me because I just couldn’t put it down. The story and adventure draws the reader in and there are twists and turns that catch you off guard! I was about 80% in not wanting to leave this world but at the end I was so satisfied with how everything was wrapped up. It was like the author gave you a warm hug as a departure from the world she created.

This was a nice conclusion to the story. Some chapters felt a bit like filler chapters but overall enjoyed the story.

This book had me experiencing some very conflicting thoughts. There were strong moments where the scenes were vivid and captivating. But there were a lot of moments in between where I felt lost in the details and was just reading to get through.

The world building in book 1 was not as thorough as I would have liked, but I was hopeful that it would expand more in book 2. Unfortunately I don’t think I really grasped the world building any more in this one either. I think it was trying to be more and bigger and in some ways became too much to comprehend. The gods and their abilities were unfathomable at times.

As a reader who visualizes scenes as I read, I found this book very difficult to visualize. It was either too detailed in mundane things or not detailed enough/to abrupt in other ways.

Kiara and Jude spend a lot of this book tackling the connection issue they discover between the two of them in book 1. It felt like a very long and repetitive cycle in this book with lots of things happening all with the same results?

I do love the shadow wielding badass FMC with the light wielding MMC to balance each other out. I think this was a fun twist that carried a lot of the story.

Everyone gets a love interest in this, too which I don’t think was necessary. Did I love the pairings anyway? Yes.

In general, I liked the story. I liked the beginning, the first 1/3 was strong at continuing the story from book 1 and it really does just jump right into things. The middle was slow and confusing at times. This is where I struggled the most. But the final 1/3 was again picking up pace and bringing things to a conclusion in a way that was enjoyable.
