If honest I've never read a story that featured a male harpy before and the fantasy cover caught my eye. I had to put aside any preconceived ideas about harpies because the ones here are most certainly nothing like the ones from myths . No they are surprisingly gentle, timid creatures and yet the golden harpy is fierce and a born leader. Fantasy, greed, lies, love and very odd science all come together in this story but unfortunately the characters and the appalling portrayal of cliches meant I frequently felt taken aback. Plus there are truly violent atrocities in this story that sickened this reader. I did however find the eco message that runs through this to be thought provoking but even then it seemed to be quite late in the story. Not exactly fantasy as there are sci fi elements here but it's not a convincing romance either as our heroine is so insipid and yet she is paired with this beautiful male who is all too eager to sacrifice himself. I really wanted to like this more but it's a story that has characters that left me cold and I really prefer to actually like the main characters
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Kari has returned to Dora after being on earth for a decade. She is glad to be home but dismayed that the harpies are almost extinct. The harpies are not considered human even though they have human form and also wings! Before she went to earth, Kari was saved by a harpy from death. Now Kari is trying to save the harpies. Will she succeed? She remembers the harpy that saved her and hopes to see him again. Will she?
I enjoyed the story. It is fast paced. I must say that there is violence in this book that some may not like. I am not a fan of violence but it is a part of our life today. Humanity has both good and bad sides. I think that the novel reminds us of this. Many don't like to be reminded. A good book to read for fantasy readers.
