Hilarious and brilliant. Perfect for any parent in the thick of things raising kiddos. This looks like a wonderful children’s book until you read the story. Adorable illustrations!

Book 177 of 300 ~ 2024

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Hilarious and witty... and scarily true... I assume?

All I know is that it made my ovaries shrivel up... and I will just stick to being a godmother and spoiling the kiddos... until they get cranky, and that's when I'll hand them right back to their parents who will deal with them and think to themselves.. why can't this child stop crying, especially since I Fking Said So...

One whole star just for that. LOL

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, as a parent I can definitely relate to the sentiment. On the other hand, I’d been expecting something a little more humorous; this book just sounds like someone frustrated and fed up with their family.

It’s presented like a children’s book, and while I can appreciate the satire in it, it was very jarring that it didn’t even attempt to rhyme or follow a rhythm. Overall, I was expecting to enjoy this book a lot more than I actually did.

Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These opinion are completely my own.

I normally love these satire children books, but these one comes across more aggressive then the others. I do feel like most parents would relate to the sentiments written and the ones who love sarcastic humour will love it.

Thank you to Netgalley and this team for allowing me an advanced copy of this book.

Between the chicken nuggets, frostbite, and useless parenting tips, I feel seen. Cheers to parenting and laughing along the way. This book should definitely be the lullaby to parents of littles everywhere.

Adorable and detailed pictures coupled with oh so relatable prose. Anyone who has children and doesn’t identify at some level with this book is probably lying. I now have teenagers so most of the scenarios showcased in this book are distant memories, but that made it even more enjoyable as I could smugly sympathise with the traumas of trying to explain rules to a toddler who defies any kind of logic. It’s quite easy to look back on the toddler years with rose tinted specs but this brought back some ‘fond’ memories and a reminder of how mentally tough those days are, especially if you’re sleep deprived, worn down or in desperate need of some time out, on your own, even if it’s just two minutes in the toilet, goals hey? Not that teenagers are particularly easy or without their own challenges but I’m pretty sure I won’t be reliving the dramas in this book again…. Phew. Actually maybe they could do a follow up with teen scenarios instead, that’d be amusing.
My only negative about this book is that it’s too short, but then, I guess if you’re in the throes of owning a toddler you can probably only read one bite sized chunk of this at a time and the whole thing will probably take you quite so time, so fair play!

What an absolutely silly book! I know parents can really relate when your children won't stop asking, "WHY?" This was such a quick read and made me laugh at how true it was. I would recommend this to any parent who has children that have or are going through the "but why?" phase.

Thanks Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book.

Because I F**king Said So by Liam James Leaven - I feel like this satire take on parenting was spot on for the most part, I laughed out loud at the ‘my last dying words’ part… this is 100% how I feel most days with a three and a half year old, especially one who has been in his ‘why?’ phase for just over a year now.

I liked the premise of this book, and at times it made me chuckle but I just couldn’t get past the actual language and rhythm choices - I couldn’t work out if there was a rhyme scheme or if there was supposed to be a rhythm to it, I felt like this overshadowed the humour and what could have been a really clever, witty and quirky little adult book (that I prob would have bought for other toddler parent friends of mine, because well, boy it’s tough 😅). I found myself constantly rereading pages to make sense of the story - some pages just seemed to not flow naturally- especially the pages where the answer of ‘f**king said so’ wouldn’t really suit the problem at hand.

The illustrations are spot on and beautifully done - Margarita is a genius who clearly leaves no detail undrawn. Her illustrations are what redeems this book for me!

I currently have a 7 year old daughter so could relate to a lot of this book!

There was plenty in the book that made me giggle and smile, it was a light hearted take on what it can be like as a parent and I can remember the number of times that she would ask why, why mummy, but why...

We recently got two kittens so it was not just the child waiting for me when I went to the toilet but both boys would be there as well as my daughter! Plenty in the book to make me smile.

It is 4 stars from me for this one, highly recommended!

This book made me and my husband chuckle! My husband and I have four kids and are always looking for helpful parenting books, but we laughed and needed it reading this book! So good!

It's funny because it's true. I could identify with every scenario in this book, answering the same questions until you just get sarcastic. I'm definitely trying to decide who needs a gift book, people with kids who want a chuckle and people who are grateful there aren't any kids living in their homes. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for this advance readers copy in exchange for my honest review. This book brought me back to my days as a single Mom of two kids when they were younger... and also now as a Mom of my grown children I could still relate. Very funny take on trying days of kids that just ask why too many times or that just won't listen. I got a kick out of the Mom trying to use the washroom in peace... how I recall the days of sitting down in the bathroom and seeing little fingers under the door waiting for me to be done. As trying as some of the days where I really miss those because I said so moments.. Time sure is a thief. Thank you for writing this book.

Well, this is a very funny book for the exasperated parent. Full of feisty poetry and wonderful illustrations, this is an enjoyable read. I must tell you, as a grandparent, that the exasperation never ends. To the extent this book replaces decades of psychotherapy, it is a bargain. Get it.

The ONLY reason this didn't get an immediate 5/5 was because I kept getting distracted and having to re-read pages because for the life of me, I could not figure out if they were supposed to rhyme. Some pages obviously had no chance, but others were so, so close (a few actually did rhyme too). I understand this is satire, yet my brain could not get past the hiccups in flow.

On to the good part...
This is SO funny. At our house we aren't to the incessant why's yet, but we have hit the phase of a constant "nOooOOoOoo" in response to any and everything we say or do, so I get the sentiment. It's wild how universal some parts of parenting are. So many of these pages have quotes I've either thought to myself or whispered jokingly to my husband when our toddler... is a toddler. *queue the requisite "BUT I LOVE HIM SO MUCH I SWEAR HE'S THE BEST THING THAT'S EVER HAPPENED TO ME DON'T GET ME WRONG"* I think that's why I enjoyed this book so much, it exists with the assumption that we all love our kids without minimizing how hard it is not to say unkind things to them occasionally.

The hidden gems in this are Margarita's illustrations. The accuracy of the boobs made me COL (chuckle out loud). Don't overlook the detail put into her work!

I'd highly recommend this (as a gift especially) for any parents going through a tough parenting phase - just make sure it's kept far from real kids' books, so this doesn't get mixed in - yikes.

This book was ok. I thought it would be more lighthearted and funny, like Go TF To Sleep.

This one didn’t have the fun rhyming vibe though.

The illustrations were nice.

Just seemed like the book itself was missing something.

Because I F**king Said So by Liam James Leaven is almost guaranteed to raise a smile, even for those of us who do not have the need to use this phrase on repeat every hour of the day. This, I'm sure, will be relatable to all parents, and to those who, like myself, are only casual caretakers of young children. Emphasized by colourful and accurate illustrations, the plight of the modern parent is explored, and daily frustrations are brought to the fore. A fun read,

Many thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for an ARC.

This story was laugh out loud funny and makes me happy I don’t have kids. The godkids are enough and they are (mostly) past this age of insanity. They have their moments.

I’m going to reserve this book later today and I demand you do, too. Because I fuckin’ said so.
