I have children and one is autistic. I looked into this book and read the reviews. I thought it would be perfect for my son. We tried it but it got confusing, even for me.
There was so much going on inside.

This is my honest review. The #ARC was sent by #NetGalley and #BooksGoSocial.

A Whimsical Journey with Luniant: An Adventure in Curiosity and Friendship

Luniant Adventures by Amanda Moore is a delightful children's story that blends fantasy and whimsy, perfect for young readers. The book follows Luniant, a curious little ant, who dreams of building a rocket to the moon to meet the mysterious creatures dancing there. Along the way, Luniant is joined by his quirky friends, including Piki the spiderling and the Streaks sisters, who bring humor and excitement to the tale.

What makes this book stand out is its vivid artwork and interactive elements. The illustrations are vibrant and clean and capture children's attention, while some pages include QR codes that bring the story to life through animations, adding a unique twist. The book is particularly well-suited for early readers, offering valuable lessons on friendship, perseverance, and creativity. Its simple, heartwarming storytelling and engaging characters have the ability to foster imaginative thinking.

‘Luniant Adventures’ by Amanda Moore introduces readers to a world seen through the eyes of Luniant, a curious ant with a knack for getting into tricky situations. The story seeks to combine adventure with lessons about perseverance and teamwork, but it doesn’t quite reach the level of engagement that young readers might hope for.

Plot: ★★☆☆☆
The plot follows Luniant, the titular ant, as he embarks on various adventures in and around his anthill. While the concept of an ant protagonist navigating the challenges of life is charming, the story lacks the dynamic twists and turns that make for an exciting adventure. The pacing is slow, and some of the events feel repetitive, which may lead to readers losing interest before the story reaches its conclusion.

Character: ★★☆☆☆
Luniant, though endearing in his determination, doesn’t quite develop into a character that readers can deeply connect with. His personality is somewhat one-dimensional, and the supporting characters lack the distinctive traits that could make them memorable. The story could benefit from more character development, giving Luniant and his friends more depth and relatability.

Illustrations: ★★★☆☆
The illustrations are one of the more positive aspects of the book. They are colourful and effectively depict the world from an ant's perspective, helping to immerse readers in Luniant’s tiny universe. However, while the artwork is visually pleasing, it doesn’t entirely make up for the shortcomings in the narrative.

Engagement: ★★☆☆☆
Despite the adventurous premise, the book struggles to maintain a high level of engagement. The challenges Luniant faces are not compelling enough to keep readers hooked, and the repetitive nature of the story may make it difficult for children to stay invested. There are moments of potential, but they are not sustained throughout the book.

Readability: ★★★★☆
The text is easy to read, with simple language that is accessible to early readers. The sentences are short and straightforward, which makes the book a good choice for young children who are still developing their reading skills. The readability is a strong point, even if the story itself doesn’t always capture the imagination.

Enjoyment: ★★☆☆☆
Overall, while there are aspects of ‘Luniant Adventures’ that show promise, the book ultimately falls short of delivering a memorable or enjoyable reading experience. The lack of character depth and a compelling plot makes it hard for readers to fully engage with the story. It’s a book that might be appreciated by very young readers who enjoy stories about animals, but it is unlikely to become a favourite.

‘Luniant Adventures’ by Amanda Moore presents a sweet idea with an ant protagonist navigating life’s challenges, but it doesn’t fully succeed in drawing readers into Luniant’s world. Despite its accessible language and charming illustrations, the book’s lack of engaging plot and character depth makes it a less compelling read. It’s a story with potential, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark for readers looking for a truly exciting or meaningful adventure.

3.5 Stars

I grabbed this book to read to my daughter because I thought the cover looked really cute. This was a cool “interactive” book where some pages have a QR code that you can scan and then the illustrations come to life. I think it’s a cool concept but it was a bit fliddly to stop reading and then scan the code and watch the video, but it is really cool. This did remind me of A Bug’s Life which I love. The story didn’t hold my daughter’s attention so I just finished reading it by myself. The actual illustrations were out of this world. They were so clean and vibrant and nice to look at.
I would recommend this book but maybe to someone with a bit more of an attention span than my child lol.

Thank you to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for the review copy.

This was such a lovely book. The artwork is one of the best I’ve ever seen in a children’s book. I didn’t really care for the first couple of short stories but the main story, Journey to the Moon, was so much fun! I would have happily given this a 5 star review but I don’t like the QR codes. Kids spend enough time on screens and they doesn’t need to be brought into reading. This book was amazing on its own.

Luniant is a fun adventure. The pictures are stunning and the embedded videos were my toddler’s favorite part. After finishing the story, we went back and watched all the videos several more times each.

We really liked the first part with the short stories and the blogger persona of luniant. The stories accompanied by the beautiful illustrations and the videos really brought Luniant to life. The content was great for the toddler/preschool age - bugs, silly names, and adventure.

The transition to the chapter story was a little odd following the introduction. There were a few pages of the story that didn’t make sense -a major one was the elder’s wisdom chapter and his exclamation that they’ve already done something like this and they have the power of wishing and magically he knows to light matches with sunlight through a magnifying glass was an odd stretch from the library for blueprints to the magical all knowing elder for dreams coming true by lighting a match.

There was also a major missed opportunity to have a video of the rocket taking off. My toddler asked several times for a video after the waterfall video, but that was unfortunately the last one instead of the finale of the story.

We would read this again for the illustrations and the videos alone.

Honestly, it wasn’t a bad book but it was too short for me and felt like it wasn’t for my age. (I’m 10).It was a really good book for maybe a 6 year old. It was about a little ant who blogs about his life as an adventurous bug who loves to hang out with his best friends. The start of his adventures was an attempt to make a rocket ship to the moon.
