The Düngeonmeister Book of RPG Trivia is a well written collection of fantasy/DND/tabletop gaming questions and trivia curated by Jef Aldrich & John Taylor. Released 24th Sept 2024 by Simon & Schuster on their Adams imprint, it's 224 pages (print format) and is available in paperback and ebook formats.
This is such a fun book. The introduction covers the basics: question types, ways for readers to test themselves or compete with others. The answers are given on the same page with the question rounds, upside down (but still easy to read - this could be a drawback in some situations, if visibility and accidentally seeing the answers are a problem). I noticed flipping through the book that I accidentally (?) stumbled over the answers whilst pondering the questions. I was actively trying not to "cheat" but still saw the answers. Since an eARC was the format I was using, it's not really practical (but it *is* possible) to cover the answer key area with a card or piece of paper.
The bulk of the book is taken up with the questions. They're hugely varied, concisely written, and definitely not all easy. I pride myself on being a trivia maven and these weren't a walk in the park. These will test even the nerdiest tabletop gaming nerd's esoteric knowledge of TTG history and lore.
Four and a half stars. This is a one-stop resource for planners of trivia nights. It will be a solid resource for trivia fans as a study guide also.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This book is great if you have been playing D&D for years or want to learn about tons of D&D lore, facts, and history. Very fun! Could easily be made into a trivia game night with nerdy friends
This book would make a great addition to board game nights, full of great questions and information.
This book is not written for me, a non-gamer. But I still enjoyed reading it, and I'm sure I'll pull facts out of it for trivia nights. It's full of insights about role-playing games, and I found the author's perspective on the genre exciting and well-reasoned.
I actually really enjoyed some of the stuff I learned about RPGs. I also was able to use this for a D&D themed event at my library. People loved the interesting trivia tidbits that I shared with them!
Great mix of classic and new games plus a wide variety of categories. Also opportunities to learn a bit. Definitely great for gamers!
This book contains lots of great RPG- and game-based trivia. I enjoyed that it included questions from way back at the origins of D&D as well as questions about more recent changes and other games. I was eager to read this with my kids, ages 9 and 12, since they're also very into tabletop games. However, as soon as we started reading it together, we were frustrated to find that the e-galley version did not include the answers to any of the questions. The introduction stated that answers would be upside-down at the bottom of each page, but they were not there. I also checked the end of the book, and the answers weren't there, either.
I'm assuming that the published version will include answers, but I'd rather not post a review on Amazon or Goodreads without ensuring that the final version will contain answers. (This would be a great, fun book if both questions *and* answers were included.)
Adams Media provided an early galley for review.
I have been a table-top role-playing gamer for four decades, so this book of over four hundred trivia questions looked to be fun. It includes multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank, and matching questions to challenge even the most experienced of players. Each chapter also provides additional details about the hobby.
These questions are no cakewalk. There are a lot of very deep cuts in this mix, making it challenging for all kinds of players. It is a very fun way to present a lot of these facts, and there is plenty to learn even for folks who have been around the role-playing game community since the start. I was very happy to see a number of my favorites and some forgotten gems being remembered as well.
More suited for experienced players. The blurb and two example questions are misleading. I could easily answer both the Stranger Things and studded armour questions, but then got the book and found the majority of the trivia very hard.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am an RPG fan and this book was really up my alley. I was afraid that many of the questions would be too easy, but that was far from the truth. The questions were both challenging and fun. The questions were varied as well. This was not simply a D&D trivia book. There were questions from tons of different RPGs. I had so much fun going through this book, and learned a ton throughout the process. I think this would be a great gift for an RPG fan. I already know I will be buying this book for many of my friends. I absolutely would recommend this book.
This book is so much fun! The Düngeonmeister Book of RPG Trivia is full of interesting RPG triva, perfect for fans of Dungeons and Dragons but also plenty of other RPGs. As someone who is an avid RPG player and who loves trivia, this was both an entertaining and informative read. I liked that there were different sections for the question to fall into, which made it feel diverse and fresh in each part. The critical information sections were helpful to understand the context of certain questions but didn't overload too much information at once. The variety of types of questions (true or false, multiple choice, connect the two) was appreciated. I will absolutely be getting this book as a gift for many friends over the holiday season.
