Complete with simple maps at beginning and end, this uplifting story of a unicorn child who isn't quite what others expect. Feeling unhappy about treating another being who might be scary, Wee Unicorn searches for the magical being and learns the most magical thing of all!
The illustrations by the author are simple, colorful, and FUN!
Well suited for reading WITH someone of age 3 and up including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!
I requested and received a temporary uncorrected eGalley on Adobe Digital Editions from Charlesbridge via NetGalley. Thank you! Avail Jan 21, 2025

Wee Unicorn is not quite what everyone expects, and mostly of the time that's okay. In fact, when she meets a monster in the lake and runs away screaming, she realizes that perhaps she is misunderstanding the monster. Wee Unicorn sets out on a quest, hoping to apologize and perhaps even make a new friend.
What's not to like about this book? The narration is clever and fun, the message heartwarming, the illustrations adorable and full of funky colors, and the ending silly and fun. While I don't love that we have to learn empathy through being hurt, I appreciate that this book reminds us that sometimes the ways we've been hurt remind us not to hurt others. This book isn't just about "be yourself;" it also reminds us to be a self that we can be proud of.
Thank you to NetGalley and Charlesbridge publishing for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed his cute story about a small unicorn who didn’t quite know who she was. Meeting someone new and becoming friends helped her discover her true self. Very sweet!
Thank you to Netgalley and Charlesbridge publishing for the digital ARC.

An adorable story with a great message - don’t be afraid to be yourself and face your fears! Things may not be as scary as they seem.
Beautifully illustrated with warm vivid and a cozy art style, coupled with a perfect story for a little ambitious reader.
I love the addition of the map in the front, introduce kids to world building early! Lovely for our next generation of literary adventurers.

I absolutely adored this in everyway
Wee Unicorn is precious and I love them
The illustrations were bright and beautiful and I would like my home to be decorated similarly
the moral was great and I love Ness.

This is a delightful story of a little unicorn learning how you can be magical even without magic. I loved that the unicorn realized her mistake and returned to Ness. The friendship between Unicorn and Ness is adorable and relatable to young children. The illustrations here were great, especially the inclusion of the speech bubbles. I love maps in books and rarely see them in children's books. I can imagine my kids would be delighted to see these! I recommend this book to all unicorn lovers.

Wee Unicorn is about everything that you are made to be. I absolutely loved seeing how the friendships formed between the unicorn and the 'monster'. It was also a super cute spin on "Ness". My daughter loves the maps in the front and is now drawing her own maps so this really did touch on many different things that are important for children: authenticity to one's self, friendship, and being kind no matter where you are or where you're from.
Thank you to this team and Netgalley for allowing me an advanced copy of this book, I'd absolutely recommend!!

This was cute. Our kiddos enjoyed it.
There are a lot of words in it they had never heard yet, and I don’t think they understood.
We enjoyed all the magical elements and the artwork.
Thanks NetGalley for the copy to review.

My goodness, could a book be any cuter?!
I love this story of Wee Unicorn and Ness. The message is very clear throughout the whole story, which I find refreshing in a children's book. Often, I have to explain at the end of a story to my students or my own daughter what the main message or meaning is behind a book. But this one makes it so clear that Wee Unicorn needs to embrace being different and not judge others for being different too. It also wraps up nicely on the last page.
The illustrations are just wonderful. Not only is the cover art beautiful, but it continues throughout the entire book with full-page pictures. The colors and style really capture the whimsical feel of the story. I would definitely pick this story up based on the cover art.
Thank you @NetGalley, Charlesbridge, and Meg McLaren for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

What a lovely book. I love books that have a message of being yourself and I love that Unicorn finds away to be happy with themselves. More importantly they find a friend that also embraces who they are without question. Being your true authentic self is hard as a kid so having books that show how to do so even when others are not always kind is important. Children will also be enchanted by the beautiful artwork and vibrant colors.
Thank you so much to Charlesbridge and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book.

Being yourself is surprisingly magical!
Absolutely loved how this wee unicorn doesn’t cave-in to what other people think of her. It gets even better when she realizes her expectations of someone else may have unintentionally been hurtful, too. While bravely acknowledging her mistake and choosing to fix it, she makes a new friend and magically finds her genuine self, too.
Thanks to NetGalley for sharing this DRC with me for an honest review.

Even more than its stated intention of teaching children to be themselves, I think this cute book works as a lesson on how you can connect with other people that you may not expect to, making friends in surprising places.

Everyone knows that Unicorns are magical creatures, or ARE they? Meet Wee Unicorn. She is small and mighty. Finding out who you are in this world can be a little confusing sometimes. With beautiful and whimsical illustrations, Wee Unicorn, shows she is not afraid being herself and letting others know who she is!

Such a cute sweet story. Illustrations fit so perfectly with the storyline. An adorable tale about what it means to just be your self.

Originally published in Great Britain in 2023, this sweet story is set in an unnamed country that resembles mythological Scotland, with giants, selkies, and a monster in the loch. The title character is afraid of the monster at first, but learns to make friends with the monster who the wee unicorn nicknames Ness. The theme of kindness and not judging others is obvious but not too heavy-handed. The cartoon-like illustrations feature dialogue balloons and use soft earth tones for the mixed media artwork. Sure to be popular due to the focus on the unicorn and the humor woven into the story.

This is such an incredibly sweet book. The art, the color, the characters -- all of them are like cotton candy. It's a kind and heartwarming story about a little unicorn (who can't do magic) that meats a misunderstood beast, and how you have to work to overcome the perceptions people place on you -- and how they can become a part of you. I will be buying this book for a young family member of mine, and recommending it whenever I can!

I loved the colors and style of the illustrations. The story felt very choppy and surface level in an almost generic retelling of other similar "be yourself" themed books.

This book really shows the importance of being yourself and not to judge a book by its cover. I’d absolutely read this book to any child I know it’s a great read with a beautiful story and some wonderful illustrations.
I am thanking NetGalley for this read.

Generally a nice art style however there was something missing which would have made this a book I‘d recommend to customers in the future.
Even for a children’s picture book the plot and character of this story was a tad flat. Like I mentioned the art itself was nice and colourful. Something that surely is appealing to kids, however art isn’t everything when it comes to this type of books.

Thank you to Netgalley and Charlesbridge for the digital arc. Try as she might, Wee Unicorn just could not find her magic to mend books or make rainbows, but her friends the Mountain Giants encourage her to “be herself”. Down on the beach the Selkies tease her about a mysterious scary beast that lives in the water, but when Wee Unicorn finds the Beast she discovers he is not scary at all. and They bond and discover that being yourself is the real magic. Perfect for story time. A map of this mythical land is drawn on the endpapers.
