The Night of the Crash by Jessica Irena Smith is an intense and suspenseful thriller that keeps readers on edge from the very first page. The novel follows Steppy Corner, a true crime podcast host, who finds herself in a web of dark secrets after waking up in a hospital with no memory of the accident that brought her to her estranged family's town. Her mother has been brutally murdered, and her brother is the prime suspect, pulling Steppy into a whirlwind of mystery and suspicion as she tries to recall the events leading to the crash.

The novel alternates between past and present, seamlessly weaving together the events before and after Steppy's accident. This dual timeline adds layers of complexity to the narrative, as Steppy uncovers her brother's link to another chilling case: a missing girl last seen with him. The suspense builds steadily, with each chapter offering tantalizing clues, making it hard to put the book down. I was completely drawn in, trying to solve the whodunit—and while I managed to guess one twist, the ending blindsided me!

There are unexpected twists and turns throughout the story, ensuring the suspense never falters. This carefully crafted ending not only showcases the complexity of the plot but also highlights Jessica Irena Smith’s skill in delivering a thriller that lingers in the mind long after the final page. The intricate storyline and well-developed characters make this a solid 4 out of 5 stars for me. Highly recommended for those who enjoy mysteries and thrillers filled with shocking surprises.

This was surprisingly very good. A podcaster, gets into an accident, causing memory loss on the same evening as her mother is killed. Told in multiple timelines leading up to that night and the present. It was fast moving, sometimes going in unexpected directions. I did get confused a few times , with all the characters and with the timelines, but that was a small problem. Overall, very good read. 4.5 rounded up

This was such a good thriller, sometimes it was a little tricky going between the past and present, but loved how this turned out and the ending blew my mind!!

I really wanted to like this but I just could not get into it. I didn't like the format and I found it to be wordy and hard to read. The premise is interesting, I just couldn't really connect to it.

Thank you for the ARC.

The Night of the Crash more than lives up to the caption "an ending that will take your breath away"

Jessica Irene Smith has written a taut thriller with twists and turns that keeps the midnight oil burning.

Steppy (Stephanie) a true crime broadcaster awakes in the hospital after a horrific car accident with an acquired brain injury that results in remembering only bits of pieces what happened to her.

She does remember however that her mum is dead and her brother is a suspect in her murder plus a person of interest in the case of a local missing woman.

The story is told in a dual time line which works very well as the suspense mounts with each story.

You cant help but feel for Steppy as her family falls apart and I thought I had everything figured out.

Expect the unexpected in The Night of the Crash.

Grab your copy and settle in for a roller coaster of a ride.

Thanks to NetGalley and Headline for the privilege of reading and reviewing The Night of the Crash.

A two handed murder mystery as a true crime podcaster goes back to the small town her family lives in. The alternating perspectives are before and after a near-death car crash which leaves her with no memory of the days before and her investigation into a missing woman connected to her brother. As you proceed you start to see the days she missed and her subsequent efforts to put it all back together again.

A great tale and a great twist.

Full of twists, this book will have you on the edge of your seat, not being able to wait to find out what happens! It was a very suspenseful read with a good plot. My only issue is some of the characters felt flat with no depth whatsoever.

Twists and turns abound.
Steppy, a successful true crime podcaster is back I. Heart sick where her
parents live but has no idea why. She awakes in the hospital, fresh from a
car accident with no memory It or of what happened before or during
the night of the accident.
But one thing is known: her mother was brutally murdered and she was driving from her cabin
to her parents home, after having received a phone call from her now missing brother.
The story is told in a back and forth style, referenced as Then and Now. After the first
couple of times, it became a bit tedious for me and distracting from the story itself.
Not a fan.
The story was interesting but I found the characters a bit weak.

What a fantastic, thrilling book! I loved every page. It was so cleverly written and the back and forth across time periods kept me on my toes as I desperately tried to work out what actually happened the night of the crash. It’s hard to review this without spoilers as the ending is just such a whammy but suffice to say it is about as satisfying a twist as you could hope for.

The Night of the Crash is suspenseful and thrilling.

Steppy wakes up after a car accident and is struggling to remember the events leading up to the crash. All she knows is that her mother has been murdered and her brother is a suspect. As she pieces together the events that happen, memories start to return. She was investigating deaths of other young women prior to her accident, but unfortunately she doesn’t remember what she has already uncovered. Her brother Garrett has been in the vicinity at the time of death of these women. Was it coincidence or more sinister?

I enjoyed the mystery and suspense, but at times it was a little repetitive and the flow didn’t go as smoothly as I would have liked. I found it a little more difficult to get through than other books with similar suspense. Overall, I really enjoyed the plot and the uncovering of events.

IT CAN ALL CHANGE IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE.
Steppy Corner, voice of hit true crime podcast series All the Dark Corners, wakes in hospital with no memory of what brought her to Heartsick - the small Colorado town where her estranged family live - no memory of why she was racing up the mountainside to her parents' house late at night . . . or why she didn't make that bend! Good book! This book had suspense, intrigue, action, murder, mystery, a great who done it and a few twists and turns. The story was interesting! I definitely recommend reading this book! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!

An absolute page-turner that had me completely captivated from start to finish. The dual timelines—before and after the crash—are masterfully woven together, creating a suspenseful narrative that kept me on the edge of my seat. Steppy, the unreliable narrator and true crime podcaster, is a brilliantly complex character. As the daughter of a recently murdered writer and sister to the missing prime suspect introduced in the first chapter, Steppy’s journey to uncover the truth is both gripping and emotionally charged.

Each chapter felt like finding a new piece of a dark and twisted jigsaw puzzle. Watching Steppy piece together the clues was utterly engrossing, even as it became increasingly clear that her brother might be involved. The tension builds beautifully, making it impossible to put the book down. And the ending? It’s a twisty, satisfying conclusion that’s well worth the wait.

If you’re a fan of true crime, thrillers, or mysteries, this book is an absolute must-read. I devoured it in two sittings, and I’m still thinking about it.

A big thanks to Net Galley and Headline Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. Highly recommend!

Main character Steppy Corner is the narrator of a true crime podcast called All the Dark Corners. One night while visiting her parents, she gets into a car accident and when she wakes up in the hospital, she finds out her mother has been killed. The prime suspect is her brother Garrett.

Steppy slowly starts piecing together bits of her memory (post traumatic amnesia), other details of that night, as well as connecting details to an older missing person case. The book then follows two narratives:

1. Steppy in the present dealing with her missing memories and unraveling the mystery surrounding her mother’s death.
2. Steppy in the past where we get to see the strained dynamics between Steppy and her parents and between Steppy and Garrett.

I found the process of unraveling the mystery fascinating because it’s through the lens of a family member investigating another family member but there’s no lost love there. Thank you Netgalley for the e-arc. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys true crime stories, unstable family dynamics, and piecing together whodunnit mysteries. Tropes: unreliable narrator, amnesia

Steppy knows better than anyone that the truth often hides in the darkest of corners, but as she races to untangle the web of secrets and lies, will it ultimately prove too close to home?

Review:
The synopsis of this book sounded very promising to me, but once I started reading I was bored. Some parts were hard to read I had to reread the sentence to understand what was being said a few times, I did not connect with any characters and this is just a personal preference but the chapters were to long.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC

I was able to read The Night of the Crash by Jessica Irena Smith fairly quickly. Most of the story held my interest, but I was never really able to connect with any of the characters.

The premise sounded so promising, but I was hoping for more and more page-turning action. The story was just okay for me.
