4.5 stars - Well this ones going to live with me for awhile!! I immediately fell in love with Rowan. She's a strong FMC, ready to break the family norms with her independence. Then there's Holden. He's out for revenge and you can't help but root for him because of his story. But I also wish he would open up a little more!! The ending.... Ugh the ending leaving us hanging!! I need book 2 now! Thanks to #macaudio2024 for the copy of this audiobook. Loved the dual narrators too.
I wasn't sure how to feel about this book. Three stars didn't feel like enough, but four felt like too many. I don't want to undersell the book, so four it is. Ultimately, I think the best way to rate the book is by breaking down each category.
Style: ⭐⭐ .5
I think the style is one of the things I'm really hung up on. Mainly, this was with the dialogue. It felt so stiff, forced, and honestly kind of cringy. I mean, no one talks like that; no one thinks like that. It just kind of removed me from the story. Suddenly, I wasn't listening to the audiobook, the world melting away around me. Instead, I was sitting in my car, or on the bus, or in my bedroom listening to these people read a book about some of the weirdest shit.
Characters: ⭐⭐⭐ .5
The characters were... something. They were hard to love, and sometimes that's done well. Sometimes it isn't. This was a mix. I liked how in-depth the characters were. They had complete backstories, complete lives. That's difficult to obtain sometimes, and I think that it was done really well. However, their personalities themselves felt a little... off. They almost felt like caricatures of themselves, like they were simply filling a trope. Over-bearing, misogynistic brother who doesn't think the FMC can handle herself. FMC who doesn't need a man, can do anything for herself. MMC who is the strong, dark, and brooding type that no one can get a read on and has a master plan that no one know. The doting secondary love interest that feels more like a fall-back than anything real (also happens to be the brother's best friend).
Plot: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Oh, my God, did I love the story itself. It was so wonderfully thought out and crafted. I don't think that it could have been done better. It was genuinely amazing, and I was on the edge of my seat waiting for whatever was coming next. How else could this go wrong? What else was he hiding? Will they? Won't they?
Climax: ⭐⭐ .5
I wanted to rate this lower, but I think the only thing keeping me from doing that was this theory that I have. Did I absolutely hate the climax? Yeah, with my whole being. But I don't think that it was supposed to be the climax. I mean, it was so abrupt. I really thought that there would be another 5-10 chapters, but there was only one. It felt like (and this is my theory) there was supposed to be another half of the book, but the publisher told the author to make it shorter. I mean, as it is, it's more than 400 pages. It felt like it was meant to be 600-800; it just ended so abruptly. Nothing was satisfied, and no loose ends were tied up.
Spice: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Okay, this part was good, and it did affect the rating. If there's no smut, I don't let it affect the rating, but if it's good or bad, that changes how good or bad the book is. And was this good. This was make-me-blush good. This was make-me-worry-other-people-can-hear-my-audiobook-through-my-headphones good. I think I can leave it at that.
Will I read the next book? Yeah, probably, if I remember by the time it's out. I have to know how it ends, obviously.
First, I want to ask who is comparing this to "This Ends With Us." Let me say it is nothing like that. No hate to CoHo, but this is 100% not like that book at all. The closest thing is that it's a contemporary romance.
The story follows two main characters. The first is Rowan, who comes from a wealthy family that runs the town where she lives. The only issue is that she was born a woman in a society that expects women to stay at home, have children, and handle social functions rather than take on boardroom roles. Although she is the VP of marketing at her family's firm, she worked hard to get there, unlike her brother, who was handed the reins.
The second main character is Holden, who comes from a much more modest background. He is on a quest for revenge against the elite of the town. They may not remember him, but he remembers how their actions shaped his life. As these two characters come together, Holden aims to take over Rowan's family business through her brother, which leaves Rowan with no say in the matter. Despite their mutual hatred, an attraction develops between them. So we have a billionaire romance (on both sides) a bit of grumpy sunshine, some enemies to lovers, and forbidden romance thrown in.
The story is intriguing, particularly Holden's perspective, which has many flashbacks that reveal the events that made him who he is. Rowan is somewhat less compelling; she aspires to take charge but lacks the confidence and assertiveness to do so. While she is fully capable, she struggles to stand up for herself. Despite the plot featuring hostile takeovers, underhanded schemes, shady brothers, and unrequited love, the central focus remains on the romance. There are some spicy scenes included; they aren’t overly abundant, but they do exist.
Additionally, this book is the first in a series, and as of this posting, there is no release date for the second book. The ending leaves us on a MAJOR cliffhanger.
Now, let's talk about the narration. The female narrator does a great job, which is what you'd typically expect. The male narrator was some intense storytelling. I mean....In. Tense. The spicy scenes were told as if they were happening in real life. The scenes were especially sad and almost made tears come to my eyes because the narrator was LIVING those scenes. I don't think I've heard one that was this into the narration before. Overall, while the story itself is decent and not particularly groundbreaking, who doesn’t enjoy a morally grey billionaire contemporary romance?
The imagery, characters, and plot fully engrossed me as I fell entirely head over heels with my first read from author K. Bromberg. I found myself looking up from this read only to have been unaware that hours had passed.
First, I mentally missed that this is the first book in a series, even though I listed it as book 1 in my Sunday Post and on my spreadsheet. Somehow my brain still thought this was a standalone book. So know that Twisted Knight is the first in a series. No idea how many books are intended for the series, but you need to know more than one. Otherwise, you might look up at 90% and realize there's too much left unresolved to be wrapped up in the last 10%. Another thing you should note if you're planning on going into this series is that language and sexual content is HIGH. I thought about DNFing many times based on these two issues alone. The good thing about an audiobook version is that you can click that little 10-second skip-ahead button and breeze through any content that might bother you. But you'd be breezing through such a large portion of this book. The dirty talk was just too much for me guys. I would have laughed in my husband's face if he said some of the stuff to me that Holden said to Rowen. Laughed and laughed and laughed. And then considering so many of the scenes were written from Holden's perspective, so the male narrator, Patrick Zeller, had to perform these scenes (and perform he did!) had me wondering what the narrator thought about these scenes which of course pulled me out of any kind of story. Honestly, I'm not a prude, but I prefer books not filled with so much explicit content. The language and the scenes. So many f-bombs. So so many GDs. I would have DNFd because of these things if I had known there would be a sequel. I thought I would push through and be done.
Now the actual story content was interesting. Holden HATES the Rothschilds, specifically Rhett Rothschild. He has issues with Chad Williams, Rhett's best friend. And he seems to have a small place of anger toward Rowen but it's unclear why at first. You know that Rhett has somehow offended him in the past but the story is slowly leaked in flashbacks throughout the book. It all makes sense. And you know Holden plans to take down the entire Rothschild family because of this past. But his plan isn't entirely revealed either.
Poor Rowen is caught up in everyone's games and manipulation. Her brother sells the family company without telling her. This devastates her because she promised her grandmother that she would keep the company in the family's hands and get it back on track. Her mother is trying to marry her off to Chad who she only feels friendship towards. Her grandmother left her money and a seat on the board in her will but only if Rowen meets certain conditions. And Holden is using her to enhance his destruction of the Rothschild family. She's the only one you can really root for in this story because despite who her family is, she's always wanted to be different and hated the role her family has wanted her to play. She isn't at all what Holden expected her to be. Yet I can't fully root for a character that pursues a path she knows she shouldn't just because it feels good. Morally this goes against everything I believe in.
Ultimately, I liked the story. I wanted to know what happened to Holden for him to hate the Rothschilds so much. And I wanted to see how his plan would unfold. I wanted to see how Rowen fit into the entire story. Yet I found myself almost laughing out loud while cringing at the sex scenes. I debated DNFing especially over the content and language. But I pressed on not realizing until the last 10% that this book is only the first of a series I don't know if I'll continue. In the end, I'm giving this one 3 Stars. Have you read (or listened to) Twisted Knight ? What did you think? Let me know!
I was so excited for this one when Kristy announced she's releasing a trilogy with Bramble Romance. The tropes are everything that I love. I immediately love and feel bad for Holden!!! Kristy sure knows how to write a broken hero.
Rowan's brother pretty much sold the family business to Holden Knight, and they don't know that he's out for revenge!!! I'm over here biting my fingers. Lol What's going to happen next?!!! What's going to happen when she finds out he's out for revenge only? Especially when she's falling for him? Ahhhh!!! Lol the things that come out of Holden's mouth though...I'll be falling for him too. 😏
Do know that this is a trilogy so it'll end in a cliffhanger. But I am so invested that I want the second book ASAP.
I really enjoyed the audiobook. Definitely enjoyable. The narrators did an awesome job.
Check out the Tropes:
Enemies to lovers
Boss x employee
Workplace romance
Billionaire Romance
Revenge
Alpha hero
This book keeps you on your toes with a ton of twists and turns. Super spicy and super worth the thrilling read. A damaged alpha with heart!! Loved it and can’t wait for the continuation.
ARGH! That was me yelling at the end as I was left with the mother of all cliffhangers and the next book not listed yet on GR so I don't have a release date to be watching for...sigh...okay, I'm under control again, well somewhat. Rowan lives in a family that takes advantage of her and treats her so bad. Holden wants to destroy the company and family and as he gets to know Rowan finds she is not really a part of that. How to keep her out of it? GAH! That ending! I need the next book NOW!
Outstanding audiobook and story!
This storyline had me hooked from the get go. I was drawn into the story and found myself invested in the characters and their outcome. Holden and Rowan had some crazy chemistry and they were a fun couple to follow. Their banter and one-upping kept you on your toes. There's quite a bit going on this book and it has a few twists that definitely keep it interesting.
Basically Holden comes along and is in the process of buying into a Rowan's family company to the point that it's basically a takeover. His motivations are a mystery that is gradually explained over the course of the book. This is an emotional read with some depth in the storyline that I didn't necessarily anticipate when I started the book. It was definitely a great read and I can't wait to continue it - - especially since we were left dangling with a bit of a cliffhanger at the end.
In addition, the audio narration was really done well and kept me glued to the book as well. It definitely lent itself to the enjoyability of the story.
Thank you to NetGalley for the early listening copy.
WOW!!!! Kristy really is busting out all of the stops with this one! Holden and Rowan's story was WOW! I have loved Riley and Colton and I was thinking that there would never be another Bromberg hero like Colton, but Holden may be that guy.
Watching the relationship evolve and the need that Holden has for Rowan and the power she has over him is electrifying. There is heat and passion and so much angst! We have just touched the surface of the secrets and the things to come in this series and I am here for it! I can't wait!
This is book 1 of 3 and how am I supposed to wait! I can't wait for book 2!
The narrators did an amazing job and I didn't want to stop listening. This story was awesome!
Coming to you with a twisted thriller, perfect for October. In Twisted Knight, siblings battle with an investor coming in to take over the family business. The twist is that the investor knew them as kids and is coming for revenge. Whoa. This book was intense and so twisted. And randomly, super spicy. So many red herrings, so many suspenseful moments, so many twists and turns. And the ending. Whoa again. I loved the flashbacks to give some insight but I also loved the present day bantering. This book had me hooked.
Holden and Rowan. Sparks fly the first time they meet. And the next time they meet they fly again - in a different way.
Holden is out for revenge. Rowan is out to prove herself. Can their goals align?
This one is spicy and sassy and the banter is superb. Narrators did a great job bringing these two to life.
Many thanks to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for an ALC!
This is the start of a trilogy and it does end on a cliffhanger but I am ok enough to wait till the next one I think. *family drama * slow burn *seggy tension *work place tension * going for the gold at any cost.
This is a new to me author but I will read more as the author has incredible timing and pacing on playing out all the different styles of tension and the audio was so well played in their tense times that I could picture the look in Holden’s eyes, the clench of his jaw.
This is my first book from this author and I feel like I was truly under a rock but I am not rescued. This was such a great book it had all the hot and spicy that you want in a book like this, though I feel like it was so next level. I’m also upset because I feel like we got the Server Room scene at the end and now are left here waiting on book 2. Though I will happily wait for what’s to come in this series and will be checking out some of the authors other series in the mean time.
What the cliffhanger!
This was my first arc audiobook via #negalley.
I don’t listen to a lot of audiobooks and this one had me hooked.
There’s dual POVs, complex characters, banter, and spice. It’s like a 7 layered cake. Enemies & Lovers and twisted games. Who is going to win at this game? Just as I thought I had it figured out and that it would be finished with a pretty bow, the author threw a wrench in it and abruptly stopped the book. Now we wait.
Such a Twisted ride! I was definitely not ready for the cliff hanger even though I should have seen it coming.
This was full of enemies to lovers, interesting banter, and a lot of rooting for out FMC!
Twisted Knight is a wild ride. Holden and Rowan are both strong characters. I especially loved Holden – his back story is equal parts crushing and uplifting. There is a lot going on with these two. The push and pull is brought to life by the excellent character development and the spot on narration. I suggest you go in blind and enjoy the ride. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Holden and Rowan.
ICK.
Honestly, I thought this would be a hit with the way it started. I was hooked and enjoying the back and forth between Rowan and Holden. But then they get together and it was so icky and cliche and I wasn’t here for it. Also, this ends on a cliffhanger which is not at all apparent to the reader…until the end of the book. I hate when cliffhangers aren’t disclosed.
Content: cringey open door. Yuck.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio for a gifted copy. My thoughts are my own.
Twisted Knight is the first book in the Tangled Hearts series by K. Bromberg.
“King of Sin meets Things We Left Behind.”
Tropes: enemies to lovers, billionaire, workplace romance
We have all heard “Never judge a book by its cover.” This is true of Twisted Knight. The cover makes it seem like the book is a fantasy book, but it is definitely a romance book.
Rowan is the daughter of a wealthy family who wants to run the family business. No one sees her though. They all see her brother instead.
Holden has one thing on his mind…revenge. He wants revenge for what Rowan’s family did to his family. His plan is to take over Rowan's family’s business.
The banter between Rowan and Holden is everything. Holden is able to see Rowan and everything she’s worth. I love their relationship.
K. Bromberg did a fantastic job and left me wanting more.
The narrator did a phenomenal job and kept me interested in the book.
Wow loved this one and just found out it is not a stand alone. Another new author for me and wow I am so excited I got to listen to this one on audio. A billionaire romance - I super enjoyed. Meet Rowan - daughter of a wealthy family - she's tough and very relatable to me (not the billionaire part though, I wish) and then meet Holden - who's mysterious and out to be her #1 enemy. The chemistry and banter were awesome. Lots of steaminess but the romance felt right. The ending was stressful in a good way, we will now have to wait for book 2.
Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillian Audio for this advanced audio in exchange for my honest opinion.
