For some reason, I thought the Moonfall series was a trilogy but I quickly realized as I approached the halfway mark that there was no way that a proper ending was coming in A Dragon of Black Glass. James Rollins quickly brings you back into a chaotic world in which Nyx and Daal in the desert and Prince Kanthe and his group of friends tries to stop the monstrosity of the bronze god Eligor being brought to life by Wyeth and now the king himself, sacrificing those he claims to love in the name of power.
There is a lot of information in this book and I sort of wish there had been a quick "previously in the Moonfall series" to refresh your memory of who and what was happening because there are a ton of characters, along with new faces and new places...it can be a bit much to get into the groove of the story but once you do? What a ride! Very much looking forward to the next/last book in the series!
I must start by thanking both NetGalley as well as the publisher Tor books for my eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Ever darkening as we get further into this Moonfall series. The third book heightens the serious nature of the pending disaster as we get closer and closer to the climax. Will all survive? I look forward to the next.
A brilliant fantasy with grit and unpredictable characters. Rollins’ talent for storytelling and well-crafted prose kept me engaged throughout this third installment of the Moonfall series.
Thank you NetGalley and Tor Publishing Group for the advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

A Dragon of Black Glass, the third book in the Moonfall series, is a bit darker and more complex than the previous books. You can really see how Rollins has matured the story!
It’s hard to review this book without reflecting on the first two. The first relied heavily on tropes and felt a bit predictable, while the second did a better job of expanding the world and making the characters more engaging. This third books pulls everything together! The stakes are higher and the characters, especially Nyx, are more willing to act drastically. However, be prepared for a cliffhanger. The book doesn't fully conclude the series which left me disappointed.
Also, a small downside to the ebook version is missing out on the illustrations of creatures from That extra visual element really brought the world to life.
The third and penultimate book in the New York Times bestselling Moonfall series from thriller-master James Rollins, A Dragon of Black Glass is a tale of relentless adventure and the struggle for survival in a harsh world that hangs by a thread.
What will they risk to save the world?
With the apocalyptic threat of moonfall looming ever closer, Nyx and her allies must venture into the eternally sunblasted lands to search for an ancient weapon buried untold millennia ago. All the while, enemies close upon her flanks, and a greater danger lurks ahead. For beneath a desert turned to glass, hidden from the scorching heat, life thrives—both wondrous and monstrous. But a more fearsome menace lies even deeper, where an ancient army has been seeded to protect a secret from any who dare seek it out.
Yet, can Nyx truly trust those at her side? Or even herself? For while her gifts grow ever stronger, so does the danger of losing herself to a dark madness. Worst yet, the same afflicts Bashaliia, her winged and bonded brother.
Elsewhere, a looming war explodes across the Crown, forging new alliances and greater enmities, as lands around the globe are drawn into fiery conflict. Prince Kanthe—now consort to the newly crowned Empress of the Southern Klashe—recognizes a hard truth: to save the world, he must destroy all that he once loved.
Beyond such struggles, a new cunning peril smolders at the heart of a kingdom. Hidden in the Shrivenkeep of the Iflelen, an ancient bronze weapon has been awoken. Fed by blood, fueled by hatred, it has only one purpose: to end all life on Urth.
But in this goal, will Nyx prove to be its ally or foe?
This book contained many twists and and turns that I hadn't anticipated. The characters felt real and often acted in a surprising way, so that even experienced readers will find it hard to predict the outcome of many story lines. The author's prose is better than average and this enhances the reading experience significantly. The conclusion was thoroughly satisfying and I wouldn't mind reading more books by the author. Highly recommend!
The vibe is darker and more dire as Nyx and her group continue into the burning desert to find another engine needed to restart the world and avoid Moonfall. They are plagued with betrayals and trials with new friends and old enemies. The kingdoms are warring in other parts of the world and a feared nemesis is rising, becoming powerful. The intrigues both successful and failures add tension to the story.
This was an enjoyable read and it was fun to be back with these characters and their troubles. I was surprised that this was not the end of the series but am happy it will continue. This is epic fantasy at its best!!!!! I look forward to the next book in the series!!
This is the third book in the Moonfall series. I love this series, and I feel that now that the reader is familiar with the world, its players, and the plot, this book moves at a better pace and there is a lot more action. Also, everything feels more dire. While I thought this was the end and this series was going to be a trilogy, the way it ends seems that this story will continue. I am actually excited at this because I was not ready for the journey to end.
I chose to dnf the first book in the series at 25% in and will not be continuing this series
Thank you netgalley for the earc
This is the third book in the Moonfall series. I believe James Rollins is planning to write 6 in total. Nyx and her allies continue their quest to reactivate long buried "implements" that might save Urth from the falling moon. They now travel from the frozen lands to the burning sands on the other side of the world in search of the ancient "engine". Meanwhile, kings and kingdoms battle and convive while trying to acquire the "key" to start the "engine" in the frozen lands.
Yet another masterpiece in the Moonfall series, although I may have a heart attack considering I have no clue how long I’ll have to wait for the next book (I made the mistake of assuming that this would be the conclusion, and I will NOT do that again)! The characters, new and old, were fantastic and the new locations and new struggles combined perfectly and my blood pressure suffered for it many times… I will not rest until I get everyone I know to read these books, mark my words!
This one has a much darker vibe following Nyx. Who will be the true villain in this story? Looking forward to the next book!
I had a great time getting back into this universe, it had that feel that I was looking for and enjoyed from the other two books. The characters felt like they belonged in this world and was everything that I hoped for. It left me excited for the conclusion of this series and can’t wait for more from James Rollins.
