This book offers a quick and practical introduction to handling workplace conflict, focusing on foundational skills for new leaders. While there is some repetition across chapters—highlighting strategies like active listening, empathy, and using "I" statements—it effectively reinforces the key concepts that leaders need to grasp from the start. However, the book doesn’t delve into more advanced conflict resolution techniques, such as managing complex situations that require a “difficult conversations” approach. As such, it may not meet the needs of more experienced leaders.
The content feels like a supplement to a broader training program, which likely explains the limited examples of dialogue or techniques that would be beneficial for building confidence in more ambiguous scenarios. One point of disagreement for me was the recommendation of the “Sandwich Method” for delivering feedback. Given how this approach has fallen out of favour—often leaving recipients anticipating criticism rather than valuing the positive feedback—this tactic felt a little outdated.
Overall, the book is concise and to the point. It would be a useful reference for new leaders, especially as part of an onboarding program, but may lack depth for those seeking more comprehensive conflict management tools.
As the book states -- conflict is inevitable but resolution is a choice -- I thought this was a great start to this practical guide. The author lays out a practical guide to help us overcome our fear of conflict. The book addresses conflict styles, skills needed to resolve conflict, skills for mediators of conflict, etc. At the end of each chapter, there are self reflection or "coaching" questions. A couple of sections I really liked (having read a lot about conflict in the past), were the sections on techniques for de-escalating conflict and mediation techniques. This would be a great book for leaders and managers because it outlines the skills needed by leaders to apply different styles based on the situation. There is also a section of top 20 skills for managers which includes a description of the skill, coaching insights and coaching questions. This book is a quick read and it is extremely practical which I like. There are some studies cited to underscore the concepts but it is not theoretical at all. I recommend this book for teams and leaders.
