This book is a game-changer! I learned so much about how the enemy tries to steal, kill, and destroy us while also being given several ways to combat the enemy's plan for my life! It's refreshing to hear of spiritual warfare from someone who is scripturally sound.
I absolutely enjoyed reading this book, and took so much away that I can apply to my life today, so I can be prepared when the enemy comes to attack.
I gave this book 5 stars. This book discusses a topic not highly discussed by Christians in such a thorough manner : our villain. JP divides the book into 3 parts. . The book begins by identifying the enemy and the many misconceptions about the devil. He also describes what he feels hell will be like ( definitely not the description some people give: "well I will be with my party friends"). The second part discusses the many ways they attack. We discover it isn't always the way we think but he also offers insight into how we can be seen as a better pick for attack. The third part talks about how we can fight back. The main ideas in our fight are Word (Scripture), Worship and Prayer. .
I recommend this book for believers as well as non believers. I thought the book was well written and easy to understand. The book is written with Scripture backup in each section. The third section in which he discusses how we can figh back truly shows how Jesus can be our guide. I will be recommending this book to my small group for study. I think it a practical handbook on a complex concept.
Thanks to Net Galley and Thomas Nelson Publishing for allowing me to read the advanced copy. .
"Your Story Has a Villain" is a very relevant book that all Christ followers and non-believers should read. Spiritual warfare is real and the devil is out to steal, kill and destroy. JP does an incredible job explaining how the devil attacks us and gives us an actionable plan of how to fight in part three of three in the book. You will not be disappointed. this book was AMAZING! i can tell lots of thoughts, experiences & most importantly prayer went into the making of this book! i encourage everyone, believer or non believer to read this because it has so much wisdom & knowledge behind it. as a follower of Jesus, reading this book has made it so much easier to detect when the enemy is at work in my life. all of JP’s books are always so good but this one definitely hit the top of my list! being able to read this book and then also reflect as i carry out my day or read the bible has been super beneficial in shutting the enemies schemes down! we are partakers in Jesus’ victory & this book definitely gave me the confidence to walk in that victory now!
The progression of who our enemy is, what his tactics are, how to combat him is practical and insightful. While JP doesn’t load the text down with theological jargon, he does support it with scripture. He sprinkles just enough theology and explanations to give you confidence in the ultimate truth that God wins!
Recommended reading for all Christ followers! I enjoy JP’s writing style- I feel like he’s sitting in the room with me, having a conversation. I appreciated his honesty and transparency in sharing the ways Satan has tempted him into sin himself and created strongholds.
The book has suggested action steps for the reader, which help you identify what areas and tactic the enemy is most likely to use in your life. JP further encourages you to share your reflections with others to hold you accountable. I don’t think we talk about spiritual warfare often enough or in practical ways, yet it is a reality for every Christian, at a personal level, and also on a larger scale. The villain has been hard at work in recent years, as evidenced by the division in our nation and within the Christian faith, as well as the explosion of the mental health crisis and rising rates of addiction and gun violence.
One of my favorite parts was when JP described the cross country race. (I also teared up reading it, JP). It was a beautiful metaphor of how we should “be” the church, encouraging others to join us and “win the race.”
I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to read an ARC as part of the launch team, as I have been anticipating the release of this book. It’s easy to forget we are in a literal battle for our soul. Your story has a villain & this book reads as a strategic battle plan to ensure he doesn’t win!
A good introduction to spiritual warfare as a concept, though I didn't personally agree with several points of biblical interpretation
(I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review)
A very good book! Challenging as well as interesting. I was pleasantly surprised, as I was not totally sure what to expect. However, the title had caught my attention! I highly recommend this!!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance e-copy of this book! All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
To effectively fight spiritual battles, we must know our enemy. The unfortunate reality, however, is that most people not only do not know the enemy and his tactics--they don't even know they are in a war. In JP's newest book, Your Story Has a Villain, he seeks to equip his readers with the knowledge and information necessary to fight effectively in our spiritual battles.
The book is divided into three parts, with the first identifying who the enemy is. This section investigates who is the devil and what is hell. Are these things real? What misconceptions do we have about each of them? Then, in the second part, JP provides six tactics of the enemy in his warfare strategy. And, in pastoral fashion, they all start with the same letter: destructs, distracts, deceives, disunifies, desensitizes, and deconstructs. Finally, the last section teaches us how to fight back using the armor of God and the power of prayer.
Each chapter, in addition to the information throughout, offers a "Make It Stick" conclusion. JP uses this opportunity to offer some practical tips to live out what that chapter covered. I appreciated this tangible approach, as simply knowing about the enemy and knowing about the weapons and defenses at our disposal will do nothing for us unless we employ them. That is often the disconnect that occurs: "Okay, great, info. Now what?"
If you desire to learn more about spiritual warfare and what the Bible has to say about it, this is a great primer. I felt it offered a comprehensive overview defining terms, revealing tactics, and laying out our response. Not only was this book informative, but it was actionable, too. Further, JP offers illustrations that are relatable and writes in a style that is easily understood and to read. I'm thankful to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the advanced readers' copy in exchange for my honest review.
