Do you know how rare it is to find a nonfiction graphic novel???? I am so tickled pink with happiness that the Magic Tree House series is making their Fact Tracker series into a graphic novel series as well!!! Graphic novels are by far my favorite genre. When there's a chance that a nonfiction one comes my way, I leap on it!
This graphic novel is about.... you guessed it: dinosaurs. Jack and Annie guide us through all the facts you could possibly want to learn and more about these giant reptiles! I liked the robust glossary at the end. I also so that they gave the dinosaurs names and the meanings behind them and if there was a fun fact, they would add it in. This novel wouldn't have been complete without some mention of the Marshall Cope bone wars - so I was super happy to see it included! I feel like I learned a lot about dinosaurs from reading this one as an adult.
I will be adding it to my classroom library and I suggest that everyone that can should add it too. I already have ideas of turning research papers into graphic novels/comics. hmmm.
Now that the popular Magic Tree House series has been adapted into a graphic novel series, the non-fiction adjacent "Fact Trackers" seem to be the next in line for graphic novel treatment. The first one, "Dinosaurs" is a perfect adaption for those who are fans of the fictional series, as Jenny Laird is behind the abridgement of both. Jomike Tejido is a change of illustrator but he manages to balance a cartoony flair with accurate anatomy and styles that won't offend dinosaur-lovers who insist on accuracy. The one part where I think his illustrations don't manage to convey accuracy is when Jack and Annie discuss the thinness of dinosaur skin and there's a close up. I hope in the final product they have photographs in that section, because drawing crocodile scales can simulate an armored plating but whispy single lines meant to represent hairs don't portray a thin skinned lizard the way a photograph or diagram would.
The chapters are divided into the history, plant eaters vs flesh eaters, and dinosaur adjacent creatures. I particularly enjoyed how they put a pronunciation guide for each dinosaur in the earlier chapters, but was disappointed they didn't continue it when listing the dinosaur neighbors who also have some complicated names for kids (and adults!) to sound out. Since the Magic Tree House series is targeted for first grade and up, simplifying most of what happened makes it suitable for an introduction to the topic, so keeping track of the eras and pronunciation for each dinosaur is a good investment.
Overall this is a great book to introduce kids to dinosaurs. I wouldn't say it's my first choice for a dino-phile kid who is probably devouring more complicated fare with more detailed illustrations, but since the Fact Tracer series was meant to introduce non-fiction to kids who might otherwise prefer stories it is a worthy collaboration for the series.
So many interesting facts. I kept reading parts to my husband aloud. It is a really nice format. It has the vibe of Science Comics, but is your favorite time traveling siblings.
5 stars
This one is a MUST BUY for any library or parent who knows a dinosaur lover. The graphic novel format makes this accessible for pre-readers and early readers and will make them feel like they're reading a big kid book, especially with the chapters. The book includes engaging facts that help the reader learn about dinosaurs while still being engaging and fun. My son is almost 6 and isn't yet reading and loved listening to me read this one. As someone who stumbles on dinosaur names, I really appreciate the phonetic spellings and pronunciation guides included in this one. This one is a first purchase for any classroom, school, or public library and ideal for readers who are K-4 and anyone who loves dinosaurs. HIGHLY recommend! Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I will absolutely be buying a copy for my son and his teacher. A million stars.
I love all things Magic Tree House. I was highly impressed when the books were first turned into graphic novels as it helps a group of reluctant readers find amazing material and hopefully transition to reading the regular books. Well, this graphic novel fact tracker does that, but somehow even better! They are full of information presented in a way that students are sure to love. The illustrations are fabulous and it definitely makes you want to simply sit down and read the whole thing. This is going to be a game changer for the current generation of Magic Tree House readers.
As an elementary school librarian, middle school substitute and a mom of three under 12, I'm always looking for good books that I can recommend to any one of these groups. Graphic novels are a huge hit in the library and I recently added the previous released Magic tree House graphic novels.
This book was super fun, informative and bright and colorful. I know as soon as this one comes out in book form I will be adding it to our library.
Thank you netgalley for this Arc in exchange for an honest review
This is a great non fiction graphic novel! My students love graphic novels and dinosaurs! We have the first magic treehouse graphic novel and I plan on purchasing this book for my elementary library. The pictures were fantastic and the information was detailed!
With the current love of graphic novels by students, this is a great way to get nonfiction text in the hands of readers! I even learned some new information from this text! Everything was laid out nicely and easy to read
My son absolutely loves these graphic novel adaptations, so while I won’t buy this for my middle schoolers, I will buy it for him! These companion nonfiction texts are genius and so motivating for my reluctant reader.
This is a great adaption of the fact trackers series, and a wonderful accompaniment to the graphic novel adaptions. We need more nonfiction graphics for young readers, and this one did a good job of balancing fun and facts and making the pages attention grabbing and engaging.
The Magic Tree House graphic novel universe is expanding to include the series's non-fiction counterpart, Fact Trackers. The graphic novels of the main series have been a welcome addition to my school library, and I was interested to see what the Fact Trackers graphic novels would have to offer. I can see these books having significant appeal in my school library, fitting in alongside Science Comics.
I genuinely learned things I didn't know about dinosaurs. The illustrations are appealing. This is a definite purchase for my school.
This book would be a great companion to a fiction title of the same subject. It is detailed without being overwhelming for the targeted age group. The information provided is great for someone interested in learning the basics about dinosaurs, and it is comprehensive in discussing multiple facets from time periods when dinosaurs lived, to shape, size, and eating habits, and possible extinction theories. The visuals are also very appealing and would make for a great book to look through for those who are beginning readers. This would make an excellent addition to a nonfiction collection.
I was thrilled to see that the fact trackers are being turned into graphics! This first one was incredibly well done! It's a quick, informative read with wonderful illustrations that will draw kids in. The information is all straight-forward and not overwhelming. Perfect for elementary age students.
As a school librarian, I especially appreciated the research tips at the end as well. I hope to see more of these in the future!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
** Will post review to Instagram closer to publication date. **
A companion graphic novel to the Dinosaurs Before Dark that is full of fun facts. I thought this was really fun and made the info so easy to understand for kid! I’d definitely recommend it not only for those who just read the main book but also for any kids who love dinosaurs!
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received and ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
In the timeless spirit of Jack and Annie, Osbourne brings us a fascinating and engaging graphic novel for early readers. I'm a touch older than the intended audience, but I found it to be so interesting! The art is everything. There was a ton of new to me information. And it covers every aspect that I could think of in regard to dinosaurs, including who and what they shared the earth with. If you have a dinosaur lover, give this book a look.
