🧠 Where Curiosity Meets Cretaceous: A Prehistoric Adventure in Panels

In this vibrant and fact-packed graphic novel, Mary Pope Osborne’s beloved Magic Tree House universe expands into nonfiction territory—without losing an ounce of its wonder. Dinosaurs is the first in the Fact Tracker Graphic Novel series, and it’s a triumphant blend of storytelling, science, and visual delight.

After their time-traveling romp in Dinosaurs Before Dark, Jack and Annie return with questions—lots of them. What did dinosaurs eat? How did they live? Why did they disappear? This book follows the siblings as they dig into the facts behind their fictional journey, transforming from explorers into junior paleontologists.

The genius of this format lies in its accessibility: it’s nonfiction, yes, but it’s wrapped in the familiar warmth of Jack and Annie’s voices. Young readers are invited not just to learn, but to wonder—and that’s where the magic happens.

Jomike Tejido’s illustrations are a standout. His dinosaurs are dynamic and expressive without veering into cartoonish territory, and the prehistoric landscapes are lush and immersive. The panels are cleanly structured, making the book easy to follow for early readers, while still offering visual depth for more advanced ones.

The use of diagrams, maps, and labeled illustrations within the comic format is especially effective. It’s like reading a science textbook that’s been enchanted by the Magic Tree House itself.

🧬 Educational Value: Facts That Stick

This isn’t just a rehash of dinosaur trivia—it’s a carefully curated introduction to paleontology. The book covers:

- The difference between herbivores and carnivores
- The Mesozoic Era’s three periods
- Fossil formation and excavation
- Theories about dinosaur extinction

And it does so with clarity, humor, and a sense of narrative momentum. It’s the kind of book that makes kids want to ask more questions, not just memorize answers.

👦🏽👧🏼 Characters: Jack and Annie as Guides, Not Just Heroes

Jack’s curiosity and Annie’s boldness are perfectly suited to the nonfiction format. They model how to ask good questions, how to follow a thread of inquiry, and how to stay open to new information. Their sibling dynamic adds warmth and relatability to the factual content, grounding the science in human connection.

🧭 A Gateway to Lifelong Learning

Magic Tree House Fact Tracker Graphic Novel: Dinosaurs is more than a companion to a beloved series—it’s a gateway drug to science. It invites young readers to see nonfiction not as a break from the story, but as a story in itself. With its engaging visuals, thoughtful structure, and infectious curiosity, this book is a must-have for classrooms, libraries, and dino-loving kids everywhere.

Whether your reader is a budding paleontologist or just dino-curious, this graphic novel will leave them wide-eyed and hungry for more.

Thank you to Random House and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this arc.
The Magic Tree House brand keeps reinventing their products to appeal to more readers, and that is the case of the Fact Tracker Graphic Novel series, which begins with Dinosaurs. The illustrations bring the facts to life, and the pronunciation guides are an immense contribution in learning to pronounce the names of the dinosaurs. Kids of all ages will love this rendition of the Magic Tree House Fact Trackers.

I absolutely love what they did with this graphic novel! It’s such a fun and engaging way for kids to learn about dinosaurs—and even adults who are fans will enjoy it too. The artwork is amazing, and I genuinely love everything about this book. It would be a fantastic resource for homeschooling or extra learning for any kid who wants to dive deeper into dinosaurs. I’ll definitely be getting this for my son!

So this book really has two ratings, the rating with Magic Tree House nostalgia/fandom and... without.

4* With MTH nostalgia or fans to read it, this book is a lot of fun. (A bit of a whirl wind at times, so please keep that in mind when choosing who to get it for.) Some of the facts will spawn interesting conversations between parents and kids. Other facts are so well discussed in the book that it seems like the characters are part of the process. This made my young reader want to re-read the dinosaur MTH books and be able to reference to the Fact Tracker as we went, so I'd say it did its job well.

2* Without MTH love, this books lacks a real ability to hold the interest of your younger readers and will likely be something you need to have as a 'bathroom read' or something similar. That said, this book can be a good prompt to get them into the MTH series.

Note: I wasn't fact checking the books myself, so I'm not sure how solid the facts are, but none of them seemed incorrect.

Jack and Annie are back to tell readers all about the dinosaurs that populate the first book. Dino lovers will find a lot to learn from this work. The illustrations enhance the information and it is very clear what is being discussed. I have not read the original Fact Tracker so I don't know if this is updated with the latest info. The only oddball thing was the chapters with their favorite dinosaurs. They were added in a way that felt like a filler versus just "here's a dinosaur guide." Either way, kids will grab this be it for the dinos for the Jake & Annie.

Dinosaurs, graphic novels, and Magic Treehouse: a winning combination! My students loved the graphic novel remakes of Jack and Annie’s adventures, but they were also hoping the fact trackers would be related too. This book is so well done!

I allowed my son to read and provide this review. He enjoyed the book and appreciated the facts about dinosaurs. His favorite part was about the T-Rex because of his powerful tail, strong legs and tiny arms. He believes that kids will enjoy this book that love dinosaurs and enjoy reading about them.

This was a fantastic graphic novel that I cannot wait to add to my classroom library. I am always on the hunt for nonfiction graphic novels to add to my library because the students find them interesting, and they present the information in an accessible way. This book did just that. I have a decent understanding of dinosaurs and learned a lot while reading it. I would have loved to have access to a book like this as a child The illustrations were lovely to look at. This will be a popular book in the library!

The Magic Treehouse is an enduring classic, and for good reason! The books are entertaining and educational. Just as the original chapter book series included an informational accompaniment, so too do the graphic novels. And the non-fiction accompaniment is also a graphic novel. This will introduce more readers to Jack and Annie's adventures, and to science and history. I highly recommend this book for schools and libraries!

I love the Magic Tree House Fact Trackers because they are a great way to help kids transition from reading exclusively fiction or nonfiction. I am even happier to see a graphic novel version because my students LOVE graphic novels.

This graphic novel has excellent illustrations that will engage kids of all ages. The text is very informative but written in a casual enough way to still be very readable for some of the younger kids that will inevitably gravitate towards this graphic novel.

Using the characters of Jack and Annie throughout the book is key to helping get the kiddos who enjoy nonfiction to give the fiction books a chance.

I hope there will be more fact tracker graphic novels soon, I am so excited to add them to my library. I would recommend this to any elementary school library and to every public library.

Thank you to Net Galley, Random House Childrens', and Random House Books for Young Readers for the DRC. All opinions are my own and are based on my work as an elementary school librarian.

I have always loved the world of magic tree house and am so glad it is still going for my kid now. This is great for a little bit older than my kid is now and I will definitely be adding it to the collection when he is older.

This was my second Magic Tree House book, but loved it even more than the first. Although this isn’t the typical adventures following Jack and Annie, it does showcase up-to-date historical and scientific facts about their escapades. If you’re looking for something new for your kids that isn’t a “junk food” book, then I would highly recommend the Magic Tree House books, but especially this Fact Tracker Graphic Novel. How can you go wrong with dinosaurs?!

I requested this graphic novel for my kiddos and because I loved the Magic Treehouse series as a child! This one was a hit and I’m going to be grabbing physical copies for my kids when they are out.
My 9 year old gave me her personal review to post:
“I would give this 4.5 stars because it was educational but still fun. I want to read more of the series and I liked the art.”

My son is such a big fan of Magic Tree House and thinks it's so cool I get to read early release books, I got this for him and I to get and I'm so glad I did. He loved learning all the new facts about dinosaurs and says he's ready for the next one!

The Magic Tree House series has always been a big hit in our home so when I saw there was a Graphic Novel focused on Dinosaurs, I knew I had to get it and share it with my oldest. This was a quick read for us and an absolute hit! We loved it and have already preordered it in both digital and physical formats.

I have been a fan of the Magic Tree House graphic novels since they first came out, but I wasn't sure that the "fact tracker" books would be able to hold my interest. I was happily wrong! This book does a great job of explaining how we know what we know about dinosaurs and lots of dino information in an accessible way. I've read a lot of paleontology books for kids, and this one was truly great! The illustrations were on point, and information was up to date without being dense and unapproachable. Great job!

Thanks to Mary Pope Osborne, Random House Children's, and NetGalley for the chance to read and review. My opinions are my own!
