Devon Price’s UNMASKING AUTISM is a revelatory work detailing how generations of people concealed their autism to appear neurotypical, combining history, memoir, and case studies. This follow-up covers some of the same terrain in more of a self-help mode and consequently doesn’t land with the same impact as its groundbreaking predecessor. Still, the book’s thoroughness is impressive. Price again speaks to an inclusive range of autistic people and draws meaningfully from his own experience as he explores ways that autistic people who have chosen to live as their authentic selves can make progress and find community. Each section is dedicated to a topic like love and sex, friendship, and legacy, and includes worksheets to help focus the reader’s responses. A useful guide that would prove even more effective if read in conjunction with Price’s previous book.

Thanks to NetGalley and Rodale, Inc./Harmony for the eARC!

This was a really helpful book. Whether you've officially been officially or self-diagnosed as autistic, know someone who has, or just want to know more about autism, you'll find this book helpful.
For me, the first chapter was the most helpful, but part of that is because I'm not ready to make the changes discussed in some of the other chapters. I appreciated how thorough Price was in providing ideas, questions for reflection, additional resources, and even scripts for how to start conversations.

This book will give you a ton to think about, but you don't have to do everything all at once. Price is great at reminding readers to start small and work up to larger changes.
This is DEFINITELY a book I'll be returning to again and again. And I know I'll get something form it every time I do!

In the follow up to the outstanding Unmasking Autism, Dr Devon Price provides an accessible framework for considering, and hopefully undertaking, the seemingly mammoth task of unmasking the self in several areas of life. Dr Price combines personal anecdotes, broad exercises and specific examples that help guide you through the muddiness of a masked existence. While not everything was relevant for me personally, I appreciate the thoroughness that went into this text and I can see how any reader could gain insight and benefits from it. Plus, as in Unmasking Autism, the parts that hit, hit HARD. I am so grateful that Dr Price has again shared his insight and wisdom.with us. What he has done for the community cannot be overstated.

Price's latest installment in an immensely helpful body of work is another work of healing genius. Unmasking for Life covers many topics that are not only familiar to autistic people, but that prove the most difficult. I have what used to be called Asperger's and though my experiences may be different from others because of how I experience autism, I still found this book to be applicable to a wide variety of those of us across the spectrum. Price's book humanizes us in ways that say "I see you, and I not only know what it's like but here's how we could thrive". It's truly a relief to read liberation in its pages. It can be tough to give ourselves permission, where autistic people have needed to (and in many ways, as Price writes) look outside of ourselves to understand what we need to do/how we need to be in order to be acceptable to the world around us. After sufficient feedback that what makes you autistic is wrong, or unhelpful, books like Price's restore a lot of light to the soul.

Where some might seek comfort or guidance from a book on codependency, self-esteem, social skills, stress tolerance, PTSD, or ADHD, and how to do relationships with autism, Price writes a comprehensive guide. It speaks to the power of autistic people getting help from someone who is also autistic, because what looks like a lot of things needing to be addressed have one cause: trying to be autistic in an allistic world. Thankfully, we have books like Price's to better know ourselves, and learn how to let others in on what a gift we are, too.

Dr. Devon Price never misses. I really do think he is so fantastically intelligent, and I respect all of the work he has put out into the world. His book "Unmasking Autism" has made a huge impact in the autistic community (for the good) and this book will continue to expand how autistic and neurodivergent people are able to be their authentic selves in this neurotypical world. I would recommend this book to everyone, autistic / neurodivergent or not, because I believe we all have something to learn when it comes to giving up on societal norms!

Dr. Price does it again. Another amazing book that helps all autists and their families. Not only does Dr. Price give a simple to understand explanation of unmasking, why we mask and why we need to be unmasking in all areas of our lives., they also give easy to understand instructions on how to unmask. Even if you want to unmask in one area in your life, the way the book is written will allows this too.
