This is book 2 in the Sharpe and Walker book series and my first in the series. On starting I wasn’t sure if it was meant for me but I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the listen. It’s an interesting well developed storyline and seemed like the author really did his homework when it comes to the world of arson. I really liked the characters and there are some quirky ones thrown in. The narrators did a great job at holding my attention and especially when it came to male and female characters. Enjoyed this one and will keep an eye out for others in the series.

A fantastic follow-up that cements Sharpe & Walker’s fire-filled adventures as a must-read series. Book one, Malibu Burning, is still the better book. The antiheroes parallel story took it above and beyond (I miss those characters already), but here in Ashes Never Lie, we get a hit of fun crossover with Eve Ronin & Duncan Pavone (homicide detectives from another Goldberg series. No, you don’t need to read those books first, though this tale will make you want to start them immediately… which I did). Arsonists, murder, puzzling cases, and action. It’s thrills and grit every other page with a fast pace and snappy characters. It’s a great twist on a crime procedural, highly recommend.

Final note: The audiobook continues to deliver as well. Give it a try.

I am a big fan of the Eve Ronin series, it is the best thing Lee Goldberg has ever written--and I enjoy everything of his I have read. I hadn't read the first in the other series but Lee did a great job of providing just enough information about the other characters to where I didn't feel at all lost.

This is an interesting story with great characters and the narrator's were perfect! I look forward to going back and reading the previous book in the other series, and to the next book in the Eve Ronin series. Goldberg really knows how to write a mystery filled with twists and turns and just the right amount of humor!

Ashes Never Lie (Sharpe & Walker, Book 2) by Lee Goldberg
⭐️⭐️⭐️ / Pages: 286 / Genre: Mysteries & Thrillers
Audiobook Narrators: Eric Conger and Nicol Zanzarella
Duration: 8 hours, 10 minutes
Release Date: September 17, 2024

In the first book in the Sharpe & Walker series, Malibu Burning, I thought it was strange that the series was about the arson investigators rather than the exciting and charismatic criminal Danny Cole. And sure enough, this second story featured Sharpe and Walter as the leads and even had a special guest tie-in of Eve Ronin from Goldberg’s other series. But alas, these are not leading men. This arson story included a biological toxin, a comic convention, and superhero costumes, yet still did not really hold my interest. I’ll go back to waiting for that Danny Cole series.

I did like how Eric Conger and Nicol Zanzarella narrated the audiobook together. Eric voiced all the male voices and Nicol voiced all the female ones. I don’t understand why more audiobooks don’t do it that way.

Thank you, @NetGalley for my gifted copies.

Lee Goldberg combines a couple of different character arcs in Ashes Never Lie. Detective Eve Ronin crosses cases with arson investigators - Sharpe and Walker.

"Vacant homes in a new development are going up in flames. While Walker and Sharpe are investigating, they get called to another house. Except this one has a body in it. Eve and her partner, Duncan, are also called to the scene to investigate. The four investigators end up chasing an arsonist, a swindler and someone with a terrifying secret."

Goldberg has an easy-to-read (or listen) writing style. This is crime fiction, but there's a layer of humor running through the story from hilarious characters to insane situations. There are several storylines but Goldberg never gets bogged down and brings them all together. The scene at Comic Con alone makes this book worth it.

This audiobook is a little different in that each narrator does a specific character's voice. So it's a seamless performance from the team of Eric Conger and Nicol Zanzarella. They are both perfect picks for Walker and Eve.

Don't miss this wildly, entertaining story from Lee Goldberg.
