I think my favorite part was that all of the dogs were based on real dogs. I loved the little key in the back telling you who everyone was. I think my kids would have enjoyed this.
4 stars
As a retired second grade teacher, this is a very child-friendly way to explain what life is like for the president. The little dogs are cute, the rhyming text is fun although maybe a bit contrived in some spots, and the illustrations are warm and fun. The real-life pictures of the dog characters at the end add a very special feature that kids will love. I can easily imagine reading this to a classroom to illustrate how our president works to get things done for our nation. And of course, the flea infestation easily corresponds to another national emergency in the recent past. I am grateful to have received this arc in exchange for this, my honest review.
ARC Review-- 4.5⭐

Such a cute book for children to help teach them about the POTUS. Every part of this picture book was engaging and thought-out to show what the workings of our nation's leadership would be if it were ran by dogs. This makes if very easy for children to understand what each leader does in terms of making our nation run on a daily basis. From the President to the Chief of Staff to the Transportation Director, the jobs pictured and referenced are a great example for children.
The illustrations in the book were also engaging and well done to keep children interested in the story and they went along with the words perfectly..
I would recommend this book to all teachers and children looking for a better understanding of the nation's leadership and role of our President.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is about as political as a book is for me to have any interest in reading it!
The pictures in this book are adorable. I like that the real life dogs are the characters and their little bios are at the end of the book.
Such a cute book for youngsters! It's an adorable take on the presidency and what to do in an outbreak affecting public health.
LOVE the illustrations throughout the book.
The book rhymed throughout!
Otis' biggest problem is dealing with an outbreak of fleas!
If Otis Was POTUS! offers a fun and imaginative twist on American politics by envisioning a day in the life of a dog president, Otis, and his trusty FLOTUS, Sawyer. This cute children's book provides a playful and non-partisan introduction to the U.S. government, making complex concepts accessible and fun for young readers. I enjoyed how the book uses humor and creativity to engage kids while teaching them about government roles and teamwork. It’s a great read that combines education with entertainment.
Thank you to NetGalley for this e-copy of If Otis Was POTUS by Slater Harry in exchange for a honest review. This is a cute, rhyming animal story about Otis the President and his First Lady Sawyer and how he and his cabinet try to solve a national flea problem. This book teaches young readers the importance of community how everyone can work together for a common purpose..I wish our lawmakers would read this book.Cute illustrations!
Ever wondered what would happen if dogs ran the White House? 🐶🇺🇸 If Otis Was POTUS! is your answer! This adorable book imagines Otis as President and his buddy Sawyer as First Dog, showing how they’d tackle the nation’s challenges with wagging tails and teamwork. It’s a paws-itively fun way to teach kids about the government without getting too serious or partisan. Grab this book and let the fur-filled fun begin! 🐕📚🎉
I liked the idea of this book in that the main aim is to introduce the United States government to children, with the election coming up in a few months it is great timing and as a parent I found that the book was informative in a fun way.
I liked the illustrations and they brought the characters of Otis and Sawyer to life - I liked the very end of the book too where the different characters from the book are shown.
The book was a very much simplified approach but it does give an overview of the meetings, how problems come up that need to be acted upon fast as the impact can be massive (in this case fleas!!). It is a good introduction to kids which characters they will really enjoy too.
It is 4 stars from me for this one - highly recommended!
what a cute book for election season for both young and older readers. this was a cute read and would be a fun addition to a classroom library
This clever and adorable book is perfect for election season. Lower grades kids will love it and upper grades kids will try to figure out what real people the dogs represent.
“If Otis was POTUS!” written by Slater Harry / illustrated by Yevheniia Lisova - (5 Stars-Out Now) is a brightly illustrated and fun introduction to the office of President and some members of his staff as they help Otis manage a national flea emergency.
Otis is POTUS and along with Sawyer (FLOTUS) and his Head Advisor, Chief of Staff, Press Secretary, Health Secretary, and the Secretary of Transportation, Otis calmly and reassuringly addresses the problem and the nation when fleas begin to spread! The author does a good job of demonstrating rational and non politicized responses and governance to a national problem (COVID anyone?), and I particularly appreciate the “Meet the Cabinet” section at the end of the book, where the real-life canine inspirations for the cabinet members, get their moment. Interestingly, for parents reading this book aloud to their children, the similarity to COVID in the storyline seems pretty obvious and then I remember that kids who would be most interested in this book most likely weren’t born or don’t remember the pandemic. Woof, time goes by.

Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These opinion are completely my own.
Although I am Canadian and do not have a president, I would find a way to vote for Otis. The story was fun, but finding out that the dogs are based on real dogs upper the cuteness factor by 200%. Scooter and I would make a good rotisserie chicken team.
This is such a cute book. Thank you NetGalley and BookBuzz for the book! Such a cute pawsome way to introduce politics to younger ones. The rhymes are cute and it flows well. My favorite part is the Meet the Cabinet at the back of the book!
